G- OVERVIEW OF THE OP OBJECTIVES BANKING AND FINANCIAL MARKETS Over past decades, world economies have undergone profound transformations. Among them, the role of financial markets has considerably risen, driven by the tremendous growth of domestic and international financial transactions. As recently as thirty years ago, the universe of financial instruments was composed almost exclusively of deposits, short- and long-term plain vanilla debt, and equities. Financial institutions have specialized in relatively narrow segments of these markets. In the intervening years, significant developments in technology and in the pricing of assets have enabled innovations in financial instruments that allow risks to be separated and reallocated to the parties most willing and able to bear them. This phenomenon has notably led to the tremendous development of derivatives markets. While these markets were started to operate in the early 70s, they count now for more than 600 trillions USD as compared with the 30 trillions of the total world GDP. In the past few years, the rate of financial innovation has even quickened, pushed by the economic globalization and the changing volatility of market prices. Financial systems and financial services firms' strategies are now involved in a fundamental, far reaching process of realignment and change. The strategic priority of banks has shifted away from growth and size alone towards a greater emphasis on profitability, performance, and shareholder value creation. The growing economic importance of financial sectors has also re-emphasized the fact that bankers and consultants must have a clear understanding of the theory and practice relating to banking and finance. The financial industry has then gone through a complete transformation. Deregulation of financial markets, spurred by dramatic technological evolutions, tore down the walls that had existed between domestic and international money and capital markets; as well as between banks, insurance companies, investment firms, and stock brokers. Major financial institutions that once offered only a narrow set of services, such as retail banking, now provide investment banking, investment management, insurance, brokerage, with the objective to become true global players. The aim of the Banking and Financial Markets OP is to provide an in-depth operating knowledge and hands-on understanding of the capital markets and their instruments by developing students’ critical and professional skills. This OP is thus designed to help finance professionals develop strong analytical, practical, and quantitative skills. This profile is increasingly demanded by financial institutions, as well as consulting outfits. More precisely, the OP is designed for providing you with an up-to-date suite of tools in order to: o analyze and solve complex pricing and structuring issues; o to work out, adapt or formulate alternative rewarding investment strategies; and o to manage the risks of financial decisions.
