24 Raffay ZoltánTHE GROWTH OF TERTIARY EMPLOYMENT IN THE ADVANCEDMARKET ECONOMIESZoltán RaffayIn recent decades the number of those employed in the service sector has increased at afar more rapid pace than that of employees in other sectors, and in the advanced marketeconomies the service sector has been the main source of employment during this sameperiod. Such a large sector is necessarily heterogeneous, but some tendencies seem to becommon to all countries: the increase in the number of those employed in producerservices is about twice as high as the figure for the tertiary sector in total; the expansionof the number of jobs in social services has slowed down since the late 1970s in almostall market economies; the number of employees in personal services has grown, mostlydue to the expansion of the hotel and catering industry; the number of self-employed hasincreased rapidly in the services field, especially in market services; and, finally, servicesare less sensitive to recession than is industry.
