FFFFOLK TRADITION OF LITHOTHERAPY IN WEST
GEORGIA
Georgian folk medicine has the ancient and rich tradition of
treatment by various minerals and precious and half-precious stones. Such
stones were used for treatment of diseases either separately or mixed
with different remedies in the form of solution or powder.
Georgian written sources and ethnographic materials evidence the
popularity of such stones among the population of Georgia. Besides, it is
still practiced at present: lithotherapy is used by popular healers for
treatment of some, and especially psycho-neurological diseases. The
number of their patients is solid enough. Healing stones were used both in
the form of solution or powder and together with other means of
treatment. Such stones are, too, used against the evil eye and accordingly,
against the resulted illnesses. Children wear some stones as talismans.
It is worth mentioning that close relation is observed between the
folk tradition of lithotherapy and traditional professional (Karabadiani)
knowledge.
