FOLK TRADITIONS OF TREATMENT OF SOME DISEASES IN
CHILDREN IN SOUTH-WEST GEORGIA
The article shows the experience of Georgian people in treatment of
pediatric diseases, gained during centuries. We mainly discuss the
treatment of diseases in children till the age twelve. One of the spread
diseases in children was scrofula (“childish”) where some diseases of
spasmodic characters were united. The folk treatment of this disease was
mainly the combination of natural and magic means. It was ancestral and
was passed from generation to generation. There are lots of medicines
against scrofula in Georgia today. Such as: “Pachkoria medicine”,
“Ugrekhelidze medicine”, “Gabichvadze medicine”, “Rachuli medicine”
and so on.
The second disease that caused weakness in children was called
“galakhva” (in translation – to beat). It was also treated with the help of
magic means connected to the moon phases.
The following dangerous disease – “simchle”, caused the problems in
children’s height and development. Children shopped to grow up. There
are still some folk - “doctors” who treat this disease completely with
baths, mixture and ointment.
