Transmigration is a government way to help improve people’s welfare by
relocating people to areas with a relatively low density to open new land (especially
outside Java). In 2009, transmigration program in Kulon Progo Regency has
dispatched 67 families of 213 persons. A total of 6 families with 20 persons located
in Bengkulu Province, 25 families with 82 persons in South Sumatra, each 15
families with 49 persons and 15 families with 46 persons in West Kalimantan and
South Kalimantan respectively. And last, the destination of North Sulawesi and
Central Sulawesi each 5 families of 13 persons and 1 household of 3 persons.
In terms of prosperity stage, there were 43,473 families (36.07 percent)
classified as poor family in Kulon Progo Regency in 2009, followed by KS I of
26.727 families (22,18 percent), KS II of 12.595 families (12,28 percent), and KS III
as many as 33.287 families (27,35 percent) and as many as 4.437 families (4,21
percent) is a KS III +.
MANPOWER
Community involvement in economic activity often measured by the number of
people entering the job market. The number of new job seekers in 2009 was 6.912
persons. Level of education-wise, there were 508 persons (4,75 percent) finished
elementary school, 1.153 persons completed junior-level (10,78 percent), high school
equivalent 5.467 persons (51,12 percent), Diploma reported at 1.823 persons (17,05
percent), and 1.744 university graduated persons (16,31 percent). In total, the
number of new job seekers in 2009 has increased quite drastically by 54,73 percent
from the previous year (the number of job seekers in 2008 was only 6.912 persons).
The term of working-age population according to the National Labor Force
Survey (Sakernas) is the population aged 15 and over who classified into the labor
force group and not labor force group. In 2009, among 374.921 total population in
Kulon Progo there were 303.722 persons at the working age population. The number
elaborated as 146.381 male residents and 157.341 female residents. Within the
working age population, they are classified as work force group sum of 222.551
