KADIPATEN PAKUALAMAN REGION (DISTRICT ADIKARTA)
In the southern area of Kulon Progo there was an protectorate area of Keprajan
Kejawen named Karang Kemuning hereinafter known as the District Adikarta.
According to the book 'Vorstenlanden' mentioned that in 1813 Prince
Notokusumo named as KGPA Ario Paku Alam I and got a place (palungguh) in
west bank of Progo River along the southern coast known as the Pasir Urut
Sewu. Because the dispersed ground, then Sentono Ndalem Paku Alam named
Kyai Kawirejo I advised of one unified land. With a united ground, then it was
entitled to become a district-level regional unity. This area named Karang
Kemuning with Brosot as the capital.
Acted as the first Regent was Tumenggung Sosrodigdoyo. The second Regent, R.
Rio Wasadirdjo, received order from KGPAA Paku Alam V for drying work on
the Karang Kemuning Swamp. The dried swamps became a paddy field was
then named as the Adi (Linuwih) and Karta (Fertile) or a very fertile area.
Therefore, the Sri Paduka Paku Alam V changed the name Karang Kemuning to
Adikarta in 1877 and moved its capital in Bendungan. Then in 1903, the capital
