Until 2009, the economy of Kulon Progo Regency was still highly dependent on
agricultural sector, and the local government had continued to diversify export
commodities as an alternative source to increase revenue. The evidence was an
increasing value of export commodities of several industrial products to several
countries such as Japan, Netherlands, and Australia.
In 2009, exported commodities from Kulon Progo Regency were Charcoal Briquette,
Agel Handicraft, Wood Container, Woodcraft, Crystal Sugar and Wig. The export value
reached US$ 4.820.366, an increase of US$ 198.842 or 4.30persen from the previous
year. The highest value of export commodity was the charcoal briquette which reached
US$ 2.869.088 or 59,52persen of total export, respectively followed by Agel Handicraft
(US$ 1.138.800 or 23,62persen), Wig (US$ 487.710 or 10,12persen), Woodcraft (US$
213.200 or 4,42persen), and Crystal Sugar (US$ 111.568 or 2,31persen).
Home industries of Agel Handicraft are concentrated in Pengasih, Sentolo and
Nanggulan subdistricts, While Charcoal Briquette and Woodcraft Workshops located in
the Sentolo Subdistrict, Sugar crystals concentrated in Girimulyo Subdistrict and the
Wig Factory can be found in the subdistrict of Wates.
In order to improve the export volume and value of these commodities and
industrial products, local government of Kulon Progo promoted them through package
tours, exhibitions and promotion program of the region out of the area.
