1.3. Malacofauna (Mollusca) Os Moluscos terrestres são geralmente uma componente importante da fauna de invertebrados dos habitats nativos das ilhas. Com um total de 111 espécies, os moluscos são dominados pela Ordem Stylommatophora (Gastropoda) que, per se, totalizam 93 espécies (ver Quadro 5). Nos Açores, a origem dos moluscos (terrestres e dulçaquícolas) é claramente Paleárctica, embora alguns taxa terrestres suscitem questões biogeográficas estimulantes. Tal será o caso de endemismos como Leptaxis e o complexo Napaeus, os quais não têm uma distribuição uniforme nos arquipélagos da Macaronésia, sendo considerada enigmática, uma vez que o primeiro está ausente nas Canárias, enquanto o segundo está presente neste arquipélago e nos Açores, mas ausente na Madeira (Martins 1989a, b). Por outro lado, nos Açores, contrariamente ao que acontece nos outros arquipélagos Macaronésicos, o género Oxychilus apresenta uma forte expressão endémica (13 espécies), podendo assim considerar-se este arquipélago como um centro de radiação evolutiva daquele grupo Paleárctico. À excepção do Corvo, as restantes ilhas apresentam uma riqueza específica superior a 40, e nos taxa endémicos, igual ou superior a dez. Saliente- -se que São Miguel apresenta a malacofauna mais diversificada, com 76 espécies, 22% das quais endémicas dos Açores (Fig. 5). Em seis das nove ilhas açoreanas, os endemismos representam mais de 25% da malacofauna, destacando-se São Jorge, com 33,3%. Nas restantes ilhas, a taxa de endemismo situa-se entre 17% e 24% (Fig. 6). Apenas quatro ilhas possuem endemismos exclusivos, destacando-se Santa Maria, com cerca de 70% (Fig. 7). São Miguel e Terceira apresentam endemismos de ilha acima dos 20% e Faial, abaixo de 10% (Fig. 7). Estes valores são explicados, no caso de Santa Maria, especialmente pela idade geológica mais antiga da ilha (cerca de 8 Ma) (ver Borges & Brown 1999). As ilhas que neste estudo não apresentam espécies endémicas exclusivas poderão ter sido sujeitas a um esforço de amostragem 38 1.3. Malacofauna (Mollusca) Terrestrial molluscs are usually an important component of the invertebrate fauna in the native habitats of islands. With a total of 111 species the molluscs are dominated by the order Stylommatophora (Gastropoda) with 93 species (see Table 5). The origin of the terrestrial and freshwater molluscs of the Azores is clearly Palaearctic, although some terrestrial taxa raise stimulating biogeographic questions. In the case of endemic genera like Leptaxis and Napaeus in the Macaronesian archipelagos one notices a puzzling, enigmatic distribution. Both genera are found in the Azores, but the former is absent from the Canaries, and the latter cannot be found in Madeira (Martins 1989a, b). In contrast to its distribution in the remaining Macaronesian archipelagos the genus Oxychilus shows a strong endemic expression (13 species) in the Azores, thus providing the archipelago with an evolutive radiation center of that Palaearctic group. With the exception of Corvo the other Azorean islands show species richness above 40 species and endemism richness equal or above ten. It is worth noting that São Miguel has the most diversified malacofauna with 76 species, of which 22% are endemic to the Azores (Fig. 5). In six of the nine islands the endemism represents over 25% of their malacofauna, in São Jorge it even reaches 33,3%. In the remaining islands the rate of endemism remains between 17% and 24% (Fig. 6). Only four islands have exclusive endemic species; Santa Maria tops them all with about 70% (Fig. 7). In São Miguel and Terceira over 20% of the endemics are exclusive to the island, whereas in Faial less than 10% are exclusive (Fig. 7). In the case of Santa Maria the explanation for these values lies in the fact that it is the oldest island geologically (about 8 My) (see also Borges & Brown 1999). The absence of exclusive endemics in some islands could be explained by undersampling or the fact that the description of new
