Piet Hein Eek: “Se fai cose che non ti piacciono, neanche il loro successo ti soddisfa”. Era il motto della sua vita, come lo ha espresso in un’intervista alla radio che ho ascoltato mentre ero a Shanghai. Molti fanno qualcosa che non amano davvero, credendo che prima o poi le cose andranno meglio. Ma quello a cui presti attenzione cresce, come una pianta che riceve acqua. Quindi, se fai cose che non ti piacciono, molto probabilmente diventerai tu stesso uno specialista in cose che non ti piacciono. In altre parole, lo scenario migliore è che diventi sempre più bravo a fare qualcosa che non vuoi fare. Si ha paura del contrario: di fare esattamente quello in cui crediamo. Certo, nel caso peggiore, si può fallire, ma è sempre meglio fallire in qualcosa che piace, piuttosto che avere successo in quello che non ci interessa. Conosco molto bene Piet Hein, ed è sempre stato una fonte di ispirazione. Il mio socio, Bas den Herder, lavorava per lui. Fabio Novembre mi ha detto che c’è un modo di dire italiano: “Se devi fare un passo, tanto vale farlo più lungo della gamba”. Non so se ho tradotto correttamente l’espressione, ma la mia interpretazione mi ha motivato molto a lasciarmi andare. Era come essere su una strada senza limiti di velocità. Gli olandesi sono spesso troppo sobri, e c’è un’espressione in olandese che dice “normale è già abbastanza folle”, che è più o meno l’opposto. È come porsi dei limiti. Fabio, invece, dice che niente è abbastanza folle! Lo conosco molto bene, mi chiama “fratello”. Sono sempre ispirato dalla sua ospitalità. La citazione sul fare passi grandi lo rappresenta perfettamente. Sono molto felice di conoscere così tante persone in grado di motivarmi in questo modo. Ottimisti pieni di energia positiva. È bellissimo esserne parte. Hella Jongerius: “Quando disegni, crea nipoti, piuttosto che fratelli e sorelle”. Ho fatto uno stage a Rotterdam in uno studio vicino a quello di Hella. Una mia amica lavorava per lei e mi ha detto che Hella ripeteva spesso questa frase. Mi ha aiutato nella creazione delle mie collezioni. Provo sempre ad allontanarmi di due passi da quello che ho già fatto, altrimenti, sarebbe solo un’altra variazione dello stesso tema. Ad Anthon Beeke, famoso grafico olandese e marito di Li Edelkoort, devo la citazione “Avere uno stile proprio è come essere in prigione”. Ho letto questa citazione in un libro quando stavo ancora studiando e mi è rimasta impressa. La seguo ancora, perché non ho un vero stile. Cerco di saltare da una cosa all’altra. La mia personalità è il mio stile, ma non il modo in cui disegno. Di solito i designer reputano molto importante avere uno stile, ma io sono completamente d’accordo con Anthon, limita la tua libertà. Crea aspettative che devi soddisfare. L’anno scorso a Eindhoven ho parlato ancora con Anthon, mentre cenavamo in un ristorante temporaneo chiamato Eat Drink Design durante la settimana del Design. Mi ha detto che apprezzava il mio lavoro, il mio atteggiamento “scherzoso”. Il fatto che io sorprenda continuamente le persone giocando con quello a cui siamo abituati. Non sapeva che usavo la sua citazione come linea guida, ma lui è stato davvero fondamentale. Marcel Wanders: “Oggi è sul New York Times, domani se lo dimenticheranno tutti.” Quando ero appena uscito dall’Accademia, andavo spesso nello studio di Marcel, dato che la mia sedia Smoke era parte della collezione Moooi. Una volta lui ha detto questa frase a uno dei suoi collaboratori che esitava a pubblicare qualcosa per il NY Times. L’atteggiamento di Marcel è un’ispirazione per me: fa quello che fa semplicemente, senza esitazioni. Quando studiavo ero convinto che ogni fase dovesse essere perfetta, ma la citazione di Marcel ha messo nella giusta prospettiva l’importanza di qualunque cosa. Nessun dubbio, fallo.
