The present studies investigated the effect of purified procyanidin fromblack beans (Phaseolus vulgarus) on absorption of labeled glucose by isolated rat ileum… Procyanidines (PC)significantly inhibited the glucose-dependent and phlorizin-sensitive component of Isc, a similar result wasobtained for the alanine-dependent fraction of Isc. In everted ileal sacs PC inhibited Na+-dependent uptake oflabeled glucose, but not passive uptake, by a noncompetitive mechanism. The effects of PC are reminiscent ofthose of recognized intestinal secretagogues and suggest that the antinutrient effects of condensed tanninsinvolve stimulation of intestinal secretion at the expense of absorption” (Silverstein LJ, Swanson BG,Moffett D. Programs in Nutrition and Zoophysiology, Washington State University, Pullman, WA 99164-4236,USA. Procyanidin from black beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) inhibits nutrient and electrolyte absorption in isolatedrat ileum and induces secretion of chloride ion. J Nutr 1996; 126: 1688-95).112 “Reported values for total body stores of chromium vary between 0.4 mg and 6 mg. Chromium stores may behigher in neonates than in adults, relative to body size, whereas tissular chromium may be depleted in theelderly. The recommended daily allowance for chromium is 50 to 200 µg/day but actual needs are poorlyknown. Digestive absorption is better for organic chromium, which is part of the "glucose tolerance factor"(GTF), than for inorganic chromium… Chromium is part of the GTF molecule… Chromium deficiencymay play a role in a development of some forms of adult diabetes mellitus and of arteriosclerosis. Partialchromium deficiencies seem to be common, especially in individuals with high intakes of refined foods.Acute chromium poisoning is usually due to an excess of chromium (VI) and is sometimes seen in thechromium industry” (Dubois F, Belleville F.
