The academic setting, with the medical school at its core,allows patients unprecedented access to new developments and technologies at themoment they become available, a key distinction of university-based care.Thanks to the efforts of prominent Italian physicians, surgeons, and scientistscurrently working at the University of Miami, UHealth maintains very activepartnerships with several Italian Universities and academic institutions.In the field of Diabetes research, collaboration with Italy is particularly developed.Dr. Camillo Ricordi, Luca Inverardi, Antonello Pileggi, Alberto Pugliese, and LuigiMeneghini of the UM Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) work closely with theUniversities of Milan, Pavia, and Pisa, along with the Mediterranean Institute ofTransplantation and Advanced Therapies (ISMETT) in Palermo, where Dr. Ricordialso serves as President of the Board.H. Dr. PaoloRomanelli and Dr. Joely Kaufman of the UM Department of Dermatology organizean annual meeting in Pisa, directed by Dr. Marco Romanelli and this year chairedby Dr. Martin Zaiac, where UM and the University of Pisa enjoy a long lasting andproductive relationship with the Department of Dermatology chaired by Prof.Barachini.Moreover, at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, ranked number one in the US, Dr. VittorioPorciatti, a graduate of the University of Pisa, was recently awarded a major grantfrom the National Institute of Health.Additional UM-Italy partnerships flourish in the area of transplantation and TissueEngineering. At Niguarda Hospital in Milan, Dr. Ricordi’s group is working with Dr.Mario Marazzi and Dr. Francesca Crovato. At the University of Turin, MolinetteHospital, active collaborative efforts are ongoing with Dr. Luigi Biancone from theDivision of Nephrology and the program of cellular transplantation for diabetes.Finally, in the area of biotechnologies, three UM start-up companies, ConvergeBiotech. Inc., LifeGate Inc., and Jotmate Inc. have been established thanks to thecontributions of Italian “Angel Investors” and “Venture Philanthropy”. A newinitiative that involves the commercialization of technologies surrounding a noveltype of adult stem cells (Miami Cells) was spearheaded by UM based Italian scientistDr. Gianluca D’Ippolito. Dr. D’Ippolito is now collaborating with another Italianbasedinvestment group to form what could become yet another joint commercialinitiative between UM and Italian investors in the area of regenerative medicine.Without a doubt the ties between Italy and South Florida via the University ofMiami and UHealth are strong. As one of the nation’s leading private researchuniversities, UM takes great pride in its research mission, and is committed to theadvancement and commercial application of scientific discoveries. All’OspedaleMolinette della Universitá di Torino sono in attointensi sforzi di collaborazione con il Dott. LuigiBiancone della Divisione di Nefrologia e con ilprogramma per il trapianto di cellule nella cura deldiabete.In ultimo, nell’area delle biotecnologie, sono staterecentemente costituite tre nuove compagnie dellaUM, Converge Biotech. Inc., LifeGate Inc. e JotmateInc., grazie al contributo di investitori in capitale dirischio e venture con investitori di fatto italiani. Unanuova iniziativa che riguarda la commercializzazionedelle tecnologie relative ad un nuovo tipo di cellulastaminale adulta (Miami Cells) é stata capeggiatadallo scienziato italiano Dott. Gianluca D’Ippolitocon base alla UM. Il Dott. D’Ippolito sta attualmentecollaborando con un altro gruppo d’investimentoitaliano per creare quella che potrebbe diventareun’altra iniziativa commerciale congiunta tra la UM einvestitori italiani nell’area della medicina rigenerativa.I legami tra l’Italia ed il Sud della Florida attraversol’Universitá di Miami e l’UHealth sono senza dubbioforti.
