alternative seasons of splendour and decadency. As a small geolinguistic

island, Algherese Catalan survived throughout the centuries, despite being

a small harbour town, 350 km away from Maó (in the island of Menorca)

and 530 km from Barcelona (Catalonia’s capital). Even now we are quite

surprised by the survival of this language (especially after experiencing

centuries of separation and the absence of communication), but it should

be remembered that the Algherese Catalan singularity is the actual proof of

a medieval Mediterranean which was an authentic bridge between different

cultures. It was a time in which the sea was seen as an open opportunity for

new relationships and ideas. Times have changed, we are well into the second

decade of the XXI century, and Alghero is and should be many things for

the Catalans: a privileged touristic destination, given the beauty of the city

and its surrounding beaches and landscapes; a place to explore, in a search

for our origins and our past; but also a great chance, driven by the cultural

and linguistic proximity, to start new ventures in the business and scientific

research fields.

The city of Alghero represents for Catalonia, the realization of a status quo

that today is far from obvious. This means that there are certain Mediterranean

identities that are rooted in the network of relationships built over

time by the people across the shores of this sea. Relations that had benefited

from the sea which brought us together in the beginning, centuries ago,

as well as in the XXI century.
