Vacanze Romane
la Venere capitolina a Washington
The Capitoline Venus Goes to Washington
La Venere Capitolina fa innamorare
Washington. La scultura è
la vera star della mostra "The
Dream of Rome: The Eternal Masterpieces
in the United States,
2011-2013" presso la National Gallery
of Art di Washington, inaugurata
martedì 7 giugno dal sindaco
Gianni Alemanno durante la visita
ufficiale nella capitale degli Stati
Uniti. Numerosi gli articoli della
stampa americana dedicati alla
bellezza classica di questo capolavoro
dell'Antica Roma, dal Washington
Post, al Washington
Times fino all’ArtfixDaily.
III, direttore della National Gallery of Art, all’ArtfixDaily
Capitolina è il primo tassello di "The Dream of Rome",
e la National Gallery of Art.
Beni Culturali-Musei Capitolini, e la National Gallery of Art,
Venere Capitolina
Washington has fallen in love
with the Capitoline Venus. The
sculpture is the star of the exhibition
‘The Dream of Rome: The Eternal Masterpieces
in the United States, 2011-
2013’ at the Washington National
Gallery of Art, which was inaugurated
on Tuesday 7 June by the Mayor
Gianni Alemanno during his official
visit to the US capital. A number of articles
praising the classical beauty of
this masterpiece of Ancient Rome
have appeared in the American press,
from the Washington Post, to the
Washington Times and ArtfixDaily.
The Capitoline Venus is a marble statue
dating from the second century AD, similar to the famous
Knidos Aphrodite created by the Greek sculptor Praxiteles
around 360 BC. It leaves the Capitoline Museums in Rome for
the second time only since 1979, when it was requisitioned
by Napoleon. Above all, it is the first time that the famous
statue crosses the ocean to the American continent. As Earl
A. Powell III, director of the National Gallery of Art, declared
to ArtfixDaily ‘we are eager to offer this unique, once-in-alifetime
opportunity to see the Venus outside of Rome.’
The Venus has been placed, for good reason, in the West Building
Rotunda, designed by John Russell Pope who was inspired
by the Pantheon in Rome. This is the first step in the
project entitled ‘The Dream of Rome’, which the Mayor of
Rome has set up to exhibit timeless masterpieces in the United
States over the period 2011 to 2013. The occasion marks
the start of a new phase of cooperation between the Capitoline
Museums and the National Gallery of Art.
The exhibition will run until 5 September and is organised by
Roma Capitale, Department of Cultural Heritage – Capitoline
Museums and the National Gallery of Art, with the assistance
of the Knights of Columbus and the Italian Embassy
in Washington.
