A Night at Villa D’Este
Villa D’Este apre di notte:
un’occasione unica per
visitare la villa nella particolare
atmosfera creata dall’illuminazione
che, con i
suggestivi effetti della luce riflessa
sull’acqua, aggiunge
ulteriori elementi di fascino
ad uno dei giardini più belli
del Rinascimento italiano. La Villa, incastonata nello
straordinario scenario paesaggistico, artistico e storico
di Tivoli, è un trionfo di giardini, fontane, ninfei, grotte,
giochi d’acqua e musiche idrauliche; un modello più
volte emulato nei giardini europei del manierismo e del
barocco. Datata 1550, la sua costruzione si intriga con
le vicende del suo fondatore: il cardinale Ippolito II. Lo
splendido giardino è articolato fra terrazze e pendii,
scandito da alberi lussureggianti, piante di varie specie
e dall'esaltazione scenografica dei giochi d'acqua delle
numerose fontane che prendono il nome da famose
statue in esse collocate e da originali congegni creati
esclusivamente per il cardinale Ippolito d'Este, desideroso
di generare stupore e meraviglia negli ospiti. Da
non perdere: la Fontana del Bicchierone, commissionata
a Gian Lorenzo Bernini, raffigurante un calice sovrapposto
ad un altro, entrambi sorretti da una
conchiglia; la Fontana del Pegaso, in cui trionfa la statua
del mitico cavallo alato Pegaso, Le Cento Fontane, cento
zampilli organizzati in due file sovrapposte di mascheroni
dalle forme antropomorfe. La Fontana dell'Ovato,
è la più barocca della Villa; La Fontana dei Draghi, cuore
del parco e la Fontana di Nettuno, la più imponente e
scenografica della villa, per i potenti zampilli che proiettano
in aria alti schizzi.

Villa D’Este opens at night

the water, adding to the
fascination of one of the most
beautiful Renaissance
gardens in Italy. The villa, set in the extraordinary
landscape and artistic and historic centre of Tivoli, is a
wonderland of gardens, fountains, nymphaeums,
grottoes, ornamental water features and water music.
It served many times as a model for gardens all over
Europe during the mannerist and Baroque periods. The
construction of the villa, which dates from 1550, reflects
events surrounding its founder, Cardinal Hypolite II. The
garden develops over a series of terraces and banks
planted with leafy trees and plants of various species,
enhanced by the captivating water features placed in
the numerous fountains, all named after the famous
statues set inside them and by the original contraptions
created exclusively for Cardinal Hypolite D’Este, who
wanted to astound and amaze his guests. Do not miss
the Fontana del Bicchierone, commissioned from
Bernini, which represents two cups, one on top of the
other, supported by a shell; the Fontana del Pegaso, with
its statue of the mythical horse Pegasus; Le Cento
Fontane, a hundred jets set in two rows beneath masks
of anthropomorphic forms. The Fontana dell'Ovato is
the most typically Baroque in the villa; the Fontana dei
Draghi is in the centre of the gardens; and the Fontana
di Nettuno is the most imposing and showy with its high
jets of water.
