The Echo Award is given annually
to an immigrant student who excels
in the academic field. This year 38
students were nominated. Mehmet
Günes was the only student nominated
by Tilburg University.
The prize hopes to put the spotlight
on immigrants in a positive way.
Nominees are selected for both their
academic prowess and their social
commitment. Günes for instance was
a member of the faculty council; he
participates in the University’s excellence
program called ‘outreaching’
and takes courses at the Brabant
center for entrepreneurship. Günes:
“I don’t like to be at a standstill.
Oftentimes, I don’t feel sufficiently
challenged, that’s why I keep on accepting
new things to do. I just like
Hello
Sawatdee Khrab
Bangkok!
Tarik Kabziz (22) is currently studying
at the Chulalongkorn University
in Bangkok, Thailand. He is
stunned by the contrast between
the crowded cities and the unspoiled
jungles. But nature is not the
focus of the conversation, for there’s
another side of Bangkok that is less
attractive.
Is the sex tourism visible here?
Without a doubt. Bars and clubs
are filled with prostitutes who fly to
the farangs (foreigners) like bees to
honey. Besides, there are the famous
massage salons on almost every
corner. I always feel bad when I see
young girls with some rude tourists.
to work.” On April fourth, Günes took
a special NS train to Haarlem, where
the award show will take place. This
prestigious prize contains a summer
course at the University of California.
Unfortunately Mehmet did not win.
Even underage?
Well, I haven’t checked their ID’s but
they all look older than 18 years old.
I haven’t seen any children in such
situations, but it could be that it’s
well hidden. I think that if you look
Open-air markets, free concerts, and hopefully lots of sunshine; the Netherlands is one
big happy family on Queen’s Day. Make sure to dress up in something orange - the Dutch
national colour - and join the fun. The places to be for students on April 30 are probably
Amsterdam, Utrecht or Eindhoven!
Hidden between Tilburg, Waalwijk & ‘s-Hertogenbosch you find the biggest shifting sand
area of Western Europe. A must see: National park Loonse en Drunense Duinen. Starting
points: De Rustende Jager or Bosch en Duin (Udenhout). A car to get to get there comes
in handy. No car? Take bus 136 to Loon op Zand, which is situated on the edge of this
beautiful desert-like park. Map needed.
The Dutch celebrate the end of Nazi Germany’s occupation on May 5. Pass on freedom
with music at Liberation festival Brabant. Highlights include: Katzenjammer (Norway), Mama’s
Gun (UK), Fishbone (USA), The Levellers (UK), La Kinky Beat (Spain) and Flavia Coelho
from Brazil. From 13:30 uur at Pettelaarse Schans in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Free entrance.
Oh Mark
Fragment from the diary of Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Dutch-American
star of early 90s NBC show ‘Saved by the Bell’. Salvaged from
derelict student house in Bellstraat (Tiel). It hints at Gosselaar’s
incipient savage madness:
Andrew Cartwright teaches English at the Language Center.
closer, you will definitely find it, especially
as there are a lot of warning
signs with a request to contact the
authorities if you see children accompanied
by men.
What about the political situation.
Is it stable?
It looks stable, but when I ask my
Thai friends about the monarchy
they shush me and warn that there
might be someone listening. One of
my Thai friends, who studies political
science, told me that one of her
professors was really biased when
explaining the political situation. It
seems that the monarchy is sacred
here, and there can be no open,
critical evaluation of it.
