Foreword
Welcome to the University Medical Center Groningen: the center for highly specialized medical
treatments for the more than 3 million residents living in the north of the Netherlands. We are
developing the future of health and it is our ambition to find answers to the questions associated
with the issue of healthy ageing. And each day our physicians and researchers push the
boundaries of medical knowledge and skill. And each day our nurses, paramedics and other
members of staff work on healthcare plans that enable patients to participate in society with
the highest possible level of independence. In all of these fields we train professionals who are
not only experts at the ins and outs of their chosen specialization, but who are also able to look
beyond existing boundaries. After all, healthy ageing is, by definition, an issue that requires the
integrated knowledge and experience of many disciplines.
The focus on healthy ageing seamlessly fits in with our tradition: for many decades chronic
illnesses have been a focal point of the UMCG. The strength of the UMCG is the rapid exchange
and application of knowledge and experiences within the chain of research, patient care and
education. We achieve this within our organization and with regional, national, European and
international partners. Consequently the UMCG is an important driving force for better
prevention, better diagnostics, better cure and better care.
Not surprisingly, international interest in the UMCG is growing strongly: around twenty percent
of our students and researchers come here from other countries to be trained to become
outstanding physicians or scientists.
