Grenzen van het medisch handelen
Geen ziekenhuis dat zich aan dit thema wil branden maar
toch is het overal in de wereld een hot item: de grenzen
van het medische handelen bij pasgeborenen. Sommige
baby’s zijn zo ziek en lijden zo ernstig dat ze geen enkel
uitzicht hebben op een menswaardig bestaan. Soms
passen artsen in deze gevallen - met instemming van de
ouders - passieve of actieve levensbeëindiging toe. Niet
alleen in Nederland maar overal ter wereld. Deze praktijk
werd stilgezwegen totdat het UMCG in 2004 samen met
het Openbaar Ministerie een protocol opstelde, met als
doel levensbeëindiging transparant en toetsbaar te maken.
Dit Groningen Protocol bracht een enorme discussie
op gang op straat, in de media en tot het Vaticaan aan toe.
Het positieve gevolg is dat de schrijnende problematiek
van deze kansloze pasgeborenen op de ethische agenda
is gezet. In de slechts enkele keren per jaar dat artsen en
ouders voor de moeilijke beslissing staan het leven van
een baby te beëindigen, biedt het protocol inmiddels
houvast in ziekenhuizen in Nederland en daarbuiten. Ondertussen
blijven artsen in Groningen zoeken naar mogelijkheden
om deze kinderen kwaliteit van leven te bieden
in plaats van een zacht einde.
The boundaries of medical intervention
There is no hospital in the world that wants to get burnt
by this issue, but it is a hot item around the world: the
boundaries of medical intervention in newborns. Some
babies are so ill and suffer so terribly that they can have
no expectations of ever having a quality existence. In
these cases physicians will sometimes practice passive or
active euthanasia with the permission of the parents, not
just in the Netherlands but all around the world. This was
a tacit practice until, in 2004, the UMCG and the Public
Prosecution Service formulated a protocol with the objective
of making euthanasia transparent and verifiable.
This Groningen Protocol sparked heated debates in the
street, in the media and all the way to the Vatican. The
positive result is that the distressing situation of these
newborns, who have no chance of a decent life, has been
put on the ethical agenda. On the very few occasions
each year that physicians and parents are faced with the
difficult decision of ending the life of a baby, the protocol
provides a guideline for hospitals in the Netherlands and
abroad. Meanwhile, physicians in Groningen continue to
look for options to give these children quality of life instead
of a gentle end.
