Thanks to the Junior Scientific Master Class (JSM) students
who can and want to do more than the regular study
program demands of them can take an extra course
aimed at research. Part of the JSM is a course that is unique
to the Netherlands, in which Medical or Dentistry
students can combine their studies with a PhD course.
This extends the study with an appointment for the duration
of two years. This way the program enables students
to complete both their studies and their PhD in an eightyear
period (seven for Dentistry).
The objective of the Clinical Research Schools is to increase
the students’ interest in research. The Clinical
Research Schools offer PhD students an opportunity to
publish their research and gives research leaders an opportunity
to reinforce their mutual contacts.
UMCG Wenckebach Skills Center
A state-of-the-art mini hospital with all the facilities for
medical treatment and patient care. Here, surgeons
practice new surgery techniques in a virtual learning
environment, but also in a real OR with human material.
Here, multi-disciplinary teams use computer simulation
to learn how they can work together even better
and more efficiently during unexpected emergencies.
Nurses practice procedures in a simulated real-life environment,
all without being a burden on patients. All of
this has benefits for patient care, within and outside the
UMCG, because the UMCG Wenckebach Skills Center
is also available to care providers and medical practitioners
in the region. By practicing actions and teamwork in
the skills center professionals are not only better trained
in technical actions and difficult situations, but the mutual
communication also improves. This benefits patient
safety. The skills center also helps in establishing cohesive
care chains within the hospital: the facility regularly
encourages different disciplines to ‘sneak a peek’ at each
other’s procedures and learn from each other. The skills
center is important for the development of the actual
courses and training, certainly when it comes to interdisciplinary
and multi-disciplinary collaboration. In patient
care multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration
are the order of the day. The result – and therefore the
success – of many interventions and procedures depends
on good teamwork.
Doctors, nurses and specialists train their
skills on computer-controlled mannequins.
These advanced mannequins have realistic
bodily functions. Their condition improves of
deteriorates, depending on the actions of the
personnel treating them.
Not only do we have grown up mannequins,
we also have a child and a baby.
