Discovery Tours formed in 2001 from a desire to provide high quality tours which explore the unique
features of this part of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area. Both directors; Vernon Reid and
Elayne Nilson-Reid, have a long association with Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park having worked
for the Department of Conservation as park rangers. In addition Elayne has a Bachelor of Science
degree in Ecology (the study of the interaction between living organisms and the physical
environment) from Otago University. This previous experience and knowledge is passed onto all
guides so that clients are assured of a high standard of interactive interpretation over a large range of
environmental subjects. Clients comment how they have found Discovery Tours guides provide such
complete and easy to understand information, that it has increased the enjoyment of their whole New
Zealand experience.
With such a strong conservation background, clients and agents are assured of a company with a
genuine commitment to environmental sustainability.
With worldwide concern about climate change and its effects on the environment, Discovery Tours are
first tour company based in Aoraki/Mount Cook and Twizel to actively strive for Green Globe
standards. Safety and Quality are also very important to the Discovery Tours ethos. The company was
the first Aoraki/Mount Cook based company to gain a Qualmark Endorsed Visitor Activity rating in

Under bussturen til Mt Cook fikk vi ombord Vernon Reid som guide inn i området. Han drev
også sitt eget aktivitetsselskap – Discovery Tours - med operasjon i nasjonalparken. Foruten å
gi en god orientering om nasjonalparken ga han informasjon om hvordan det vår å drifte et
småskalaforetak (eget foredrag om ettermiddagen).
