Handling, Mounting andDismounting Rolling BearingsMounting of Bearings in Cold ConditionSmall and medium sized bearings are usuallymounted in a cold condition as they do not normallyhave tight fi ts.The bearings are mounted using either pressesor by hammer strikes.The use of an effective impact sleeve enables thetransfer of the mounting force via the bearings innerring only.This ensures damage of the bearing or the shaft isreliably eliminated.In principle the bearing that has the tighter fitmust always be mounted first.Impact sleeves and impact bushesFor mounting small and medium-sized bearingsimpact sleeves and impact bushes have beenproven to be satisfactory tools. These are sets of discsand rings made from a special impact-proof plasticand lengths of aluminium tubes that fit to them.These tool sets used fi t the standardised bearingring sections.Fig. 10.4Press mounting of the same bearing into a tighthousing fit (fi g. 10.4).Impact bushes provide a quick and simple methodof mounting small bearings, even when volumemounting bearings.In repair shops complete sets of impact busheshave proven to be optimum universal devices whenfrequently dealing with different bearing types andsizes, particularly in electric motor rewinding shops.Fig. 10.5If non-separable bearings are to be mountedsimultaneously on to the shaft and into the housingseat, both bearing rings have to be supported by asatisfactory mounting washer (fig. 10.5).Note:Fig. 10.3Fig. 10.3 shows the press mounting of a radialdeep groove ball bearing on a tight shaft fit usingan appropriate impact sleeve.In the case of some bearing types, certainparts such as rolling elements or cagesmay protrude beyond the bearing sidefaces.
