Handling, Mounting andDismounting Rolling BearingsIn the initial stage of measurement the width ofthe required shims (S) has to be selected greaterthan required to enable a measurement of axialclearance. With the resulting clearance value the appropriateshim width for a specifi c clearance is determined.Fig. 10.26After the determination of the actual axial clearancethe master spacer is removed and replacedby an appropriate spacer “R” to become part ofthe bearing arrangement (fi g. 10.26).In the case of face-to-face arranged bearingsand loose housing fits the axial play can beadjusted using shims to adjust the clearance, (fi g.10.27).For volume mounting other adjusting proceduresand methods are used, such as adjusting orpreload bearings by estimating the angle ofrotation of a hook spanner used to tighten thelock nut or tightening of the lock nut by means ofa torque wrench. In several applications, the frictional torque of abearing unit is used as an indicator of a certainpreloading condition. All the methods commonly used, determine theoptimum values empirically, this means by extendedtrials and fi eld tests.Mounting of Multi-Row BearingsSpecial care and attention must be made whenmounting bearing units or multi-row bearings asthey can consist of several single componentsthat may be mounted separately (Fig. 10.28).Fig. 10.28Fig. 10.27Fig. 10.28 shows a four-row NKE tapered rollerbearing for steel rolling mills.360www.nke.at
