J. Thorsteinsson &Co. imported a small openmotor boat that was neithergiven a name nor assigneda number.
SMALL BOAT FISHERIES AND LUMPFISH FISHERMEN | THE LANDING BOAT, LANDING MACHINE AND THE EXPERIMENT 31It was not used as a fishing boat but to tow the boats that transported cargo between ships and shorefor loading and unloading of goods before the harbor for ocean-going vessels was constructed. On thissame occasion, the same store bought for the benefit of the town a land motor that was used to pumpseawater, both to laundry vats for washing salted fish and for the washing of fresh fish that came in largequantities from the Norwegian long line fishing boats that operated out of the town in these years.Another motor boat arrived in town in the same year as Gunnar, in November of 1908, bought by a groupof men spearheaded by Jóhannes Reykdal and given the name the Experiment (Tilraun) from Eyrarbakki.This boat was considerably larger than Gunnar, about 25 gross tons, and it was operated out ofHafnarfjörður until it was sold to Akureyri in the year 1912. The name of this boat is interesting becausethe first decked vessel, built in Hafnarfjörður almost a century earlier by Bjarni Sívertsen, was named theHafnarfjörður Experiment (Hafnarfjarðar tilraunin).After the Gunnar and the Experiment the number of motor boats in Hafnarfjörður increased rapidly in theyears that followed. Already in 1909, August Flygenring purchased two motor boats, the Viking and theFin (Víkingur and Barðinn), which were both about 10 gross tons. In the years 1915 – 1916, ten moremotor boats were added in Hafnarfjörður. They were of different sizes and owned by various fleetoperators in the town.
