38SMALL BOAT FISHERIES AND LUMPFISH FISHERMEN | THE LUMPFISH CATCHERSIt was frequently said inHafnarfjörður that in addition tothe golden plovers, the lumpfishcatchers were the only trueharbingers of spring. Lumpfish isa species of fish that in Icelandic has gender-specific names,Grásleppa for the female and Rauðmagi for the male.In late winter, the lumpfish draws near to the country'sshores and enter the offshore fishing grounds and tidalflats in order to spawn.They stay there until autumn, at which point they retreat from the shore and live in deeper waters untilthe next spring. Fishing for male lumpfish began earlier where they arrived early and it was not permittedto catch the female of the species until the end of April, the female being considerably more valuablebecause the eggs fetched a good price. When fishing for female lumpfish began at the end of April, theseamen stopped catching the males, which in part occurred naturally as the nets used to catch thefemales had much larger meshes than the nets used for the males, which meant that the males wereable to swim through them due to the fact that the females were nearly triple the size of the males.It was a short trip from Hafnarfjörður to the lumpfish waters, often it only took about half an hour toreach them under full steam. Each and every member of the crews on the small boats usually laid theirnets in similar places year after year, and thereby staked out a claim to a particular area of the fishinggrounds, which made sense as the lumpfish tends to seek out the area where they grew up in order tospawn there.

They laidtheir nets at a maximum depth of about10 fathoms and left them there for anaverage of three to five days. The catchcould vary greatly and consisted ofeverything from just a few fishes up tohundreds of them. Each cable held threenets and the number of cables used by eachcrew member varied greatly, although itwas common for them to have about4-10 cables in the water at each time.
