SMALL BOAT FISHERIES AND LUMPFISH FISHERMEN | BOAT BUILDING IN THE TOWN 51

The company was incorporated in 1956 and its name was subsequently changed to Bátalón, by which

time it had constructed a workshop by Hvaleyrartjörn. In this location, a multitude of boats were built of

varying shapes and sizes, among them the famous Bátalón boats that were 11-12 tons in size and

gained a reputation for bringing luck to those who sailed on them. Bátalón also began building forwardcontrol

boats, possibly as early as 1953, which were seen as an innovation at the time. The Básar boat

building yard was established in 1973 and moved temporarily to the town after the volcanic eruption on

Heimaey. At first it was accommodated in an old warehouse in Hafnarfjörður, which was on loan from

Loftur Bjarnason, and a total of 5 boats of different sizes were built there. Eyjólfur Einarsson ran

Bátasmiðja Eyjólfs in Hafnarfjörður, which built a great number of small boats over the years. Bátasmiðja

Guðmundar built boats from fiberglass. Guðmundur Lárusson and Regin Grímsson founded the company

Mótun Hf. in 1976, which was the precursor of Bátasmiðja Guðmundar. The company built plastic boats

according to a Faeroese design, which proved to be very popular so the company produced many dozens

of them.
