- 13 -AbstractPunica granatum Linn. (“Pomegranate") is a medicinal plant family Punicaseae andhas demonstrated bactericidal and bacteriostatic action on a wide range of Grampositiveand Gram-negative activity also has antiseptic, antiviral and astringent. Thepurpose of this study was to test in vitro the activity of hydroalcoholic extract ofPunica granatum Linn. front of three different cultures of E. faecalis isolated fromhumans. The broth dilution method was used to determine the Minimum InhibitoryConcentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of thePomegranate pell hydroalcoholic extract against Enterococcus faecalis. ThePomegranate hydroalcoholic extract showed antibacterial activity against all cultures, with MIC ranging from 57,57 µg/ml to 100 µg/ml, and MBC ranging from 72,5 µg/mlto 200 µg/ml. The antimicrobial sensibility was evaluated by agar diffusion test (DiscDiffusion Methods) with three different antibiotics (amoxicilina 10 µg, ampicilina µg ecefalexina 30 µg). All cultures showed resistance to Cefalexina, and susceptibility toamoxicilina e ampicilina with inhibition zones measuring 29mm for the first andranging from 26 to 30mm for the second. It can be concluded that the extract ofPunica granatum Linn. showed antibacterial activity in vitro with concentrations thatcan be used as a therapeutic antibacterial agent in Dentistry.UNITERMS: granatum; Enterococcus faecalis; Microbiology
