“Arquitetura é o jogo sábio, correto e magnífico dos volumes
reunidos sob a luz.”
“Architecture is the skilful, correct and magnificent interplay of volumes brought
together in the light.” This phrase of Le Corbusier’s, taken from his celebrated book “Towards a New Architecture”,
points out the importance of light in architectural planning and the inevitable relationship of
interdependence that exists between the two of them. After all, it is light that enables us to perceive our
surroundings, and any change in the lighting directly affects the way in which we see the architecture, its
forms, colours and textures
Therefore, we must emphasise the importance of the interaction of lighting and architectural projects
and/or those of interior design, since correct lighting will enhance the surroundings whilst poor lighting
will mar them. Happily, architects and interior designers are becoming more aware of this fact,
and more and more are seeking to integrate their projects, from the outset, with the “architecture
of light”. The projects for the Buddha Bar, in São Paulo, and the Armani Tower, in Tokyo, covered in
this edition, are fine examples of this.
The ties between lighting and architectural projects can reach a point where light becomes an essential
element in the [very] spatial project of the building or environment, as seen in the projects for
the Xi Gallery, in South Korea, and the Blue Frog Lounge, in India.
The works that we bring together in this edition of L+D clearly show [us] that the earlier the integration
of architectural with lighting projects occurs, the better and more surprising will be the final result.
A new look at the day-to-day Looking for new interpretations of day-today
objects and situations is a speciality of designer Hector Serrano, a Spaniard who
has adopted London as his base since his Master’s degree from the Royal College of
Arts, completed in 2000. With a contemporary and unprejudiced eye, Serrano creates
pieces that seem familiar to us at first sight, yet which, at a second glance, lead us to
reflect on the objects’ surroundings.
This is the case with the Playboy wall-light (2001, Droog Design), designed to
be personalised with the user’s shirts, which serve as shades. This lamp, made of
transparent methacrylate, comes in the form of a clothes hanger enclosing an 11W
fluorescent lamp. By changing its “clothes”, Playboy can match different surroundings
(and states of mind) and provide variable amounts of light according to the colour and
thickness of the fabric.
Another piece with an unusual approach is the Fan Txt fan (2002), which restores
and updates the paper of a fan as a means of communication. “There was a time when
the fan was used as a communication tool for flirting. The young lady used it to indicate
whether or no she were available, whether she wished to dance or not...,” explains
Serrano. As the Fan Txt is waved about, the LEDs incorporated into its leaves twinkle
at various frequencies and “write” a pre-programmed message in the air.
Among the luminous objects designed by Serrano, the Waterproof lamp (2003)
also deserves special mention. It was designed to be used in water (swimming pools,
fountains, ornamental pools, etc.). During the daytime, it is kept out of the water head
no ar a mensagem pré-programada.
down and switched off; at night it is tossed into the water where it floats in its upright
working position. Manufactured by the Spanish firm Metalarte in rotation moulded
polyethylene, it is completely waterproof and submersible. It uses an E10 lamp of 4.5V
and works off a rechargeable battery lasting up to 6 hours.
In all of the projects mentioned above, it is not so much a question of creating
objects with unusual forms, but rather of reinterpreting existing objects, resuscitating
their archetypal forms, thus permitting their use in new contexts.
Innovation, however, in Serrano’s work, goes beyond just use. The formal aspect
assumes a central role in other projects, as witnessed by the Sofa Lamp, a light whose
shade reproduces the texture of a Chesterfield style sofa. Developed together with the
Spanish design group CuldeSac and launched in April by the Dutch firm Moooi at the
Furniture Salon of Milan, this light borrows from the aesthetics of the traditional sofa as
a means of “transmitting the social values of this emblematic piece of furniture, adding
the natural attraction of the lighting effect itself,” comment the designers.
funcionamento.
Let there be light! To work with light as a tangible material which can take
on form: with this intention, the students from the School of Art Institute of Chicago
(SAIC) developed projects that were presented in Milan, from 16th to 21st April, at the
Furniture Salon. In collaboration with Industreal, an Italian design collective that works
with design and development, and also with the production and edition of artefacts,
SAIC put on display the results of the experiments undertaken by its students in the
18% Gray exhibition.
Delicate and discreet artefacts filter the light so as to produce areas of differing brightness,
dimensions and effects. The light is used to reveal the inherent beauty in
everyday objects and materials. 18% Gray demonstrates the potential held by design
to extract the exceptional from the commonplace. One example is the Light Ledger, a
book with three-dimensional cut-outs, which, depending on the page opened, and on
how far it is opened, projects the most varied forms onto the walls of the room. This is
an interactive experience that leads the user on “a journey through light, shadow and
forms”, in the words of its designer SJ. Lee.
Interactivity was also the keynote of Watson, designed by student Lisa Smith. This
consists of a light box with two visible surfaces: while one is totally lit up, the other is
opaque and decorated, but can only be viewed through a polarising magnifying glass.
The ornaments are made so as to give rise to different patterns according to the position
of the magnifying glass. Thus, what is perceived by each spectator is unique and
invisible to the other visitors.
Within the same scenario, installed in the lovely Fabbrica Del Vapore, SAIC also
presented the results of the school’s partnership with Industreal, who suggested the
think-tank project for the students (Let there be Light) on the concept of light and on
the potentialities of direct and reflected light. Four projects were selected by Industreal
for the exhibition. One of these is the Fizz pendant light by Caroline Linder. Made of
blown glass, it reminds one of children blowing soap bubbles. This lamp can be used by
itself or in grouped arrangements.
Industreal took part in this process “with the firm belief that light is of the same substance
as ideas, and perhaps it is no coincidence that a spark of genius is commonly
depicted by a lamp shining over a person’s head,” insist the designers.
esta intenção, os alunos da School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) desen-
primeira é puramente luminosa, a segunda superfície é opaca e ornamentada,
Quatro projetos
A iluminação é utilizada
Dentre as criações apresentadas neste
quando vista por meio de um espelho, a cortina revela a imagem da Monalisa;
mirror, the curtain reveals an image of the Monalisa, yet, when viewed directly this
image is invisible.
Also worth mentioning is the Ré light, a new version of the chandelier by architect
and designer Zaha Hadid, a work whose unmistakable plasticity betrays its authorship.
The notion of fragmentation orientated the invention of this piece, as Hadid explains:
“Each Swarovski crystal can be considered as an individual element that interrelates
with, and responds to, every other crystal. Locked in a spiralling vortex, the crystals
direction is determined by the forces of an explosion.”
Time and Space”, explains the designer. When not in use, the little white dots race
around randomly over the dark space of the display; when the user wants to know the
time, all he has to do is shake the watch or tap lightly on the glass for the dots to align
themselves to form the hands of the watch. Zhongfang’s little timepiece shows us that
Piano: a luz natural, a transparência e a praça (ou outros espaços de reunião);
A solução construtiva
do escritório Luz Urbana.
The city of São Paulo (Brazil) recently acquired a new urban landmark. This is the Otávio Frias
de Oliveira bridge, built over the Pinheiros river Marginal avenue, and opened in May.
The bridge, designed by architect João Valente Filho, is remarkable for its singular structure
combining a huge X-shaped tower (138 metres in height) with 144 stays (tensioned steel cables).
The structural model chosen, besides being very functional — leaving the Pinheiros Marginal
roadway free of pillars — has produced interesting and dynamic aesthetic results.
This dynamic view of the bridge is reinforced by the lighting project, developed by
lighting designer Plínio Godoy together with engineer Paulo Candura, from the firm Luz
Urbana. In the daytime, what stands out most are the yellow stays, contrasting with
the blue skies and the grey asphalt. At night, on the other hand, it is the tower that
becomes highlighted as the result of multi-colured lighting that shows up the internal
surfaces of the great “X”. To do this, 142 spotlights were used, equipped with 36 RGB
LEDs (Color Kinetics), furnishing constantly changing colours or the choice of one specific
tone. The exterior of the tower and the stays were treated to a soft white light supplied
by 20 Arena Vision spotlights (1000W) with a colour temperature of around 5000K.
As for the lighting of the roadway, the driving and access lanes are lit by Milewide
lights using the Cosmopolis system of lamps from Philips. This system produces white
lighting with a colour reproduction rating that is way above that of sodium lamps.
Energy efficiency was also taken into account in this project: according to Philips, the
street lighting used on the bridge uses 10% less energy than sodium vapour systems
and 150% less than mercury vapour systems.
Dynamic façade This building, located in the city of Pusan, the second largest
city in South Korea, was built with the intention of publicising “Xi”, a promotional name
for apartment buildings. Besides the standard show apartment, a considerable portion
of the building’s floor area has been reserved for use as a cultural centre. “The focus of
our investigation is to create a fluid space that can respond to the ‘continuously new’
situations arising from the dynamic flux of economy and culture,” explain the designers
from Mass Studies responsible for the Xi Gallery’s architectural project, and also for
the lighting concept adopted there.
The overall layout of the building can be divided into three parts: the over mass,
the under mass and the third in-between space. The cladding of the the upper mass
is a translucent ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) air-cushion “skin” to minimize
materiality and physical presence.
In keeping with this concept, the interior lighting seeks to emphasise and even exaggerate
the dynamism of these spaces; one example is the use of illuminated covings at
the junction of walls and ceilings, so as to give the impression that the ceiling is floating
in mid-air. On the façade, the outer skin of ETFE is lit from inside by T5 28W (x3 EA)
RGB fluorescent tubes, so as to “to recreate the volume as a ‘light’ monument,” in
the designers’ own words. The use of the RGB system allows for the generation of an
almost infinite range of colours; in the Xi Gallery’s case the colours are in a constant
but very gradual state of flux, heralding the building to its neighbours and bringing a
dynamic feature to the city’s skyline. (by Winnie Bastian)
Sangari. Além do conteúdo estrangeiro, focado essencialmente no genoma
A luz
An environment inviting discovery DNA, genome, cloning, transgenic:
all these are terms formerly restricted to use by scientists and researchers which have
now invaded the realm of the day-to-day and have become a part of our daily lives,
even though we may not be aware of the change. To map out a panoramic view of the
impact of genetics on our daily lives is the goal of the “Revolução Genômica” (Genomic
Revolution) Exhibition on display until 13th July at the Pavilhão Armando de Arruda
Pereira, in Ibirapuera Park, São Paulo city.
This exhibition, originally conceived by the New York Natural History Museum
(AMNH), is brought to Brazil by the Sangari Institute. Over and above the foreign
content, focussing mainly on genomes (the genetic material contained in the chromosomes
of an organism) and genetics (the scientific study of heredity), Brazilian visitors
will also find sections of completely domestic national content, showing, for example,
Brazilian biodiversity as well as the results of genetic research on foodstuffs carried
out in this country.
In harmony with the underlying concept of the exhibition, the lighting project, created
by lighting designer Fernanda Carvalho, seeks precisely to bring out this atmosphere of
discovery. With the exception of the first section of the exhibition, where a lovely tropical
garden welcomes the visitors and presents to them a wide variety of native plant
species, the lighting environments of the “Revolução Genômica” exhibition are typified
by an overall atmosphere of subdued lighting. The light is used in a rather controlled
and directed fashion, and the motive for this choice lies particularly in the interactive
format of the exhibition itself, which demands considerable use of video projectors
and monitors; in addition, many of the text and image panels are back-lit. Thus, the
ambient light cannot be so strong as to interfere with the visual impact of the monitors
remeter à atmosfera de uma floresta | In the entrance
blue-green beams light up the trees at selected points.
The designer’s choice, then, was to make use of subdued ambient lighting and to
highlight just those elements without their own light sources with well-defined lighting,
restricted in distribution by the use of fresnel spot-lights using 300W 2-pin halogen
lamps, or alternatively using ellipsoidal spotlights with high precision lenses for focused
light, equipped with 250W discharge lamps or 575W halogen lamps. This type of
spotlight also has shutters to limit the beam spread, thus avoiding overspill onto the
neighbouring monitors and backlit panels.
Along the route between the various “niches” that go to make up the exhibition,
the visitor returns to deep shadow. The intention is clear, as Fernanda points out: “This
exhibition is all about research and discovery, so it requires a certain amount of concentration
to take in the content. Thus, when you are reading a panel, there can be
no interference from other nearby stimuli demanding your attention. It is important
for there to be some empty spaces, some silences, since a very great deal of content
is brought together here.
The lighting of the original exhibition, set up in New York in 2000, was created by
David Clinard, lighting designer from AMNH, and also used lighting in a punctual manner,
alternating with dark and empty spaces. (W.B.)
Contemporary India The city of Mumbai gained, at the beginning of this
year, an acoustic lounge bar, the Blue Frog Lounge, which arose out of the idea of
combining a restaurant, bar and live music stage. In order to organise each of these
different functions without impairing the fulfilment of the others, architects Chris Lee
and Kapil Gupta chose to use a “cellular” structure composed of circles arranged in a
horseshoe-shaped plan.
This circular structure functions as a kind of partition, forming seating booths that
accommodate from four to ten people and which are distributed around an open
central area with a double function. Either it can be used as a stage in-the-round
or as a dance floor.
fique o lounge. (W.B.)
The partitions’ height is variable, forming an undulating pattern that allows an uninterrupted
view of the stage for all those seated at the tables, which are also installed at
varying levels. So as not to compete with the on-stage lighting, the Blue Frog Lounge’s
interior is kept in relative shadow, with the exception of the upper surfaces of the partitions,
made out of resin and backlit by wide distribution LED (PAR) cans, producing a
dynamic visual effect in the surroundings, besides making it easy for the customers to
find their way around. The use of these circular panels also ensures a constant distance
between seats regardless of how crowded the establishment becomes. (W.B.)
CLEAR ELEGANCE The Japanese are well-known appreciators — as well as
consumers — of high fashion. Well may fashion designer Giorgio Armani say so, for he
recently opened a new megastore in Tokyo, the fourth in a series started in 2000 with
the launch of the first concept store in Milan and soon followed by those in Munich
and Hong Kong.
Armani’s concept store is installed in a tower block, of six thousand m² floorspace, in
the heart of the fashionable Ginza district, where the most luxurious designer labelsof
the fashion world are to be found, and it serves as a commemoration on the part of
the designer to the twenty years of his presence in Japan — this country constituting
one of the most important markets in the world for Armani.
The project was developed by Italian architects Massimiliano and Doria Fuksas,
together in close partnership with the designer himself. The architects indicate their
departure point in the task of translating into architectural terms the image associated
visual”, explica o lighting designer Keith Bradshaw, do escritório Speirs and Major,
with Giorgio Armani: “How to combine the concept of luxury with restrained elegance,
the concept of absolute modernity with a lasting style, the Armani style? His vision and
relentless research into materials, together with his use of delicate, translucent and
radiant colours are the key factor that prompted this consideration.”
Translucency is a feature that permeates the whole building, and which is intrinsically
bound up with the materials chosen and with the lighting project. “We wanted
to create an experience in which the light was an integral part of the visual concept,”
recounts lighting designer Keith Bradshaw, from the firm of Speirs and Major, responsible
for the lighting design.
Starting with the façade, it is decorated throughout with a veritable forest of fictitious
bamboo that, at night, comes to life and visually transforms the building. The stems are
backlit with LEDs in a bluish-white shade, while the translucent white plexiglass leaves
are bathed in a golden light (Color Kinetics SL-Flex LEDs), to form a luminous cascade
that can change colour in accord with the time of day or season of the year. In this way,
the building stands out from its urban context, yet retains that image of refinement
without exaggeration that so typifies Armani-designed products.
“I chose the bamboo as the theme for this new building because its quality as a delicate
yet enduring material is a perfect expression of the seeming contrasts of this country”,
Armani explains. The bamboo theme also brings unity to the building, composed of two
Armani Casa, o primeiro Armani Spa do mundo, o Armani Ristorante,
blocks of differing texture: one opaque and the other transparent.
Throughout its twelve floors and two basement levels, the tower block brings together
the collections bearing the Armani name (Giorgio Armani and Emporio Armani,
his interior decoration line Armani Casa, the first Armani Spa in the world, the Armani
Ristorante, with contemporary Italian cuisine, and the Armani Privé lounge bar, in addition
to offices and showrooms.
The two floors devoted to the Emporio Armani are in the basement (one of them
connecting directly with the Ginza underground railway station), and are composed
of completely black rooms, punctuated by a kind of white graffiti: recesses in the
walls and ceiling are backlit by (dimmerable fluorescent lamps of 0-10V) and create
luminous strips that are reflected throughout the area, layer upon layer, thanks to the
shiny surfaces of the recomposed marble floor and the polished steel walls and ceiling.
The light within these recesses is animated to give the appearance of waves of light
rolling through the store.
This dramatic effect, though, does not distract the customer’s attention from the
products on show. “The intensity of light to the merchandise was carefully considered
to create the correct relationship with the feature walls and ceiling. The strong contrast
of the light is utilised to achieve a dramatic effect and to bring to life the clothing and
accessories,” comments Bradshaw.
On the ceiling, a custom-made system of panels is used to make the lighting more
diffused, while also concealing the light sources — the multiple reflections also contribute
to making the latter less visible.
On the three floors devoted to the Giorgio Armani label, the young and dynamic
atmosphere gives way to a more refined mood, strongly marked by the abundant use of
the colour gold. The idea of the bamboo forest used on the façade is reprised in these
areas in various forms, such as the ceiling lights — covered internally with backlit silk
cloth — which repeat the façade’s motif of bamboo leaves.
Also on these floors, mesh glass sub-division panels, perforated in a bamboo leaf
pattern, are lit from above (AR-111 lamps) to increase their translucency and to create
the sense of floating fabric in the space. Dimmers are used so as to make the partitions
appear less solid by increasing views through the panels. Finally, lighting points,
ZEN BEM-TEMPERADO
Well-seasoned zen To bestow an intimate and cosy atmosphere on a space
of the most ample dimensions was the principal challenge of lighting designers Plínio
Godoy and René Adriani Jr. in the design of the lighting project for the São Paulo branch
of the Buddha Bar, a mixture of lounge bar and restaurant founded in Paris almost a
decade ago and having subsidiaries in various countries.
Since, the vast hall of the restaurant is devoid of pillars or partitions, the solution encountered
by these two professionals, together with Ana Maria Vieira Santos — responsible
for the interior architecture and decoration — was to create “areas of reference”, or in
other words, features delimiting lesser areas within this huge environment. “The use of
diffused lighting in covings to define the vertical and horizontal planes broke up the large
space into areas further defined by the furnishings”, points out René Adriani Jr.
The general idea was to work with the composition of various planes — represented
by the horizontal (ceiling) and vertical (wall) covings — but in a relatively light-handed
manner. For this reason, the lighting designers chose to use strings of lights (halogen
sources – 16.4W/m) in the covings, as these permit rather soft lighting, an effect more
fully exploited by dimmers and used constantly throughout the whole environment.
Suavity, as a matter of fact, sets the overall tone of the Buddha Bar’s lighting,
which excels in its use of diffused lights, yet also makes good use of more concentrated
sources in two particular cases: to punctuate the tables and to highlight the thematic
ornamental features, such as the Japanese suits of armour that decorate the lounges
(spotlights with AR-70 lamps of 50W, 8°).
These lounges — more informal areas, which may be used by customers not wishing
to dine, but simply to enjoy the atmosphere and the chill-out music that first brought
such fame to the establishment — are two linear spaces situated on either side of
the dining room and partially separated from it by red velvet curtains. In these areas,
illuminated covings are also used to configure such smaller spaces, which give the impression
of small sitting rooms.
In the spacious dining room, the subtlety of the lighting in general gives way to
dramatisation at two specific points. The first of these is the bar, situated at the front
dentro deste grande ambiente.
Facing page, below: In the entrance hall, on the ground floor, a Buddha
greets the Buddha Bar’s customers, and the lighting gives a foretaste of the
refined atmosphere characterising the establishment
of the restaurant, immediately beyond the foyer. “The bar is the main focus of attention
when the customer first enters the restaurant, so it needed its own special features
that would mark it off from the rest of the surroundings. Its architecture and lighting
are therefore distinctive. At the base of the bar, we created a coving with very suave
lighting (light strings) to emphasise the brick walls in uplight; above the counter, recessed
spotlights (AR-70, 24º); and to complete the scene, pendant lights (with globe lamps of
40W) which are more for decorative purposes than constituting proper light sources”,
comments René Adriani Jr.
The second area in which the lighting seeks some theatricality is where the great Buddha
statue is installed and where the room has twice the ceiling height. This privileged position,
together with the statue’s huge scale, would anyway, naturally cause it to dominate the
whole environment of the restaurant. This impression is, however, accentuated by the
lighting: spotlights on ceiling-mounted tracks (AR-111 lamps of 100W, 8º) light the statue
frontally, enhancing its gilt colouring; behind the Buddha, AR-70 (50W, 24º) lamps with
amber filters make the statue stand out visually from its niche, highlighting it even further;
and finally, the three dimensional wooden panels framing the Buddha, lit by uplights sunk
a golden patina that harmonises them with the Buddha figure.
destacassem do restante do ambiente.
portanto, diferentes.
In the surrounding area, the room has double ceiling height and a glazed ceiling,
on which the spotlights mentioned earlier are installed, which, as well as lighting the
statue, also light the table area. The glazing is supported by a framework of masonry
whose design reminds one of oriental windows, this impression being reinforced by the
lighting (an uplighting effect achieved by the fitting of a string of halogen lamps along
the base of the window).
Thus, combining suave ambient lighting with selected points highlighted by more
dramatic, almost theatrical, lighting, the Buddha Bar’s lighting project has made an
enormous contribution to the character of this space, completely in harmony with the
oriental theme that is its hallmark. (W.B.)
A iluminação
no buffet é diversa.
light-box (with 36W fluorescent lamps with a colour temperature of 3000K and 95%
IRC) seeks to introduce into the environment a light similar in quality and intensity to
that perceived outside through the glazed windows. The result is that, although the
restaurant is located within a shopping centre — in this case the Shopping Norte —
one gets the impression of being in a more open environment in which one establishes a
more intense relationship between the interior and exterior. Absent, in this case, is the
discomfort sometimes caused by the predominance of light sources clearly perceived
as artificial, since the impression created by this “skylight” is that it really does bring the
daylight inside the Galeria Gourmet. For Ines, this well-lit environment also meets the
needs of the thronging customers of the restaurant, which operates on a buffet system
and accommodates 480 people. The lighting needs to make the place more dynamic,
helping with the circulation of customers, but, at the same time, providing comfort that
should not be confused with more individualised privacy. If the ambient light in the dining
hall is more diffused and uniform, the solution adopted for the buffet is otherwise. Here,
the food is the main focus and the lighting, so as to enhance the colours, forms and
textures of the dishes, is brighter. The lower ceiling height over the buffet here favours
the use of direct lighting and permits the creation of an atmosphere differing from that
of the dining hall. Dichroic lamps of 50W/12V were used and these follow the curves of
the built-in furniture, being recessed into a cavity in the ceiling. Over the internal part
of these curves, the solution chosen was again that of the “skylight”, casting a more
O projeto do restaurante Galeria Gourmet é
BALANCED CONTRASTS. The design of the Galeria Gourmet is marked
by a constant dialogue between curves and right-angles, rough and smooth surfaces,
horizontal and vertical planes. Consequently, one of the aims of the lighting is precisely
to reinforce these contrasts, while, at the same time, fulfilling its functional role. The
ideal horizon within this concept would be a light that sprung naturally out of the
architecture itself, as an integral part of it, rather than something external to it. The
lighting solutions proposed by architect and lighting designer Ines Benevolo, from Studio
iluz, responsible for the Galeria Gourmet’s lighting project, are the direct result of this
design approach.
The spacious dining hall is dominated by the rhythmic cadence of slender squarebased
columns. Around 5 ½ metres tall, they define the verticality typifying this Rio de
Janeiro restaurant’s interior, designed by architect Antonio Violante. The squareness
of the columns is broken by the circular plaster collars where they meet the ceiling. It
is within this junction that recessed lights are hidden (using 65W/12V AR-111 lamps
of 8°, 3000K) illuminating the four sides. This lighting emphasises the texture of the
exposed brickwork, the latter contrasting with the smooth plaster ceiling, and also provides
the required highlighting for the columns — one of the most powerful architectural
features of the environment.
Again in the main dining hall, a “skylight”, made of a screen of stretched translucent
PVC, is responsible for lighting most of the tables. Dimmer-controlled, this diffusing
lisas e ásperas, planos horizontais e verticais.
no teto.
No
Embora as lâmpadas estejam
diffused overall clarity. Above the buffet are panels with designs and reproductions of
paintings. Here, instead of diffused uniform lighting, the panels have been “streaked”
with beams of light that create lovely contrasts of light and shadow over the pictures.
The light sources are hidden in the junction between the panels and the ceiling. The
attention drawn by the designs is thus increased, since, like the columns of the dining
hall, they are emphasised by the more dramatic lighting treatment than that received
by the rest of the surroundings.
Yet not all the light sources in the Galeria Gourmet are hidden. In one of the more
interesting gambits of this project, the light source itself is transformed into a decorative
feature, by means of lights that hover over the dining tables beside the café.
PAR3, 75W lamps housed in metal cylinders project their beams onto 90 cm discs,
aluminium framed with fabric-covered acrylic diffusors. Although the lights are fitted
at a constant distance from the ceiling, the discs themselves are positioned at varying
heights, resulting in a sensation of motion within the overall arrangement. At the same
time as they stamp their aesthetic presence on the surroundings, these lights shed a
pleasing clarity serving the noble task of enhancing the dishes — the principal star of
each and every restaurant. (by Paulo da Costa e Silva)
It is easy to distinguish Kaoru Mende among so many other lighting designers
— young or otherwise, oriental or western. He it is that others follow and all would hear.
He is the master, in the broadest sense of the word.
In over twenty years of professional career, Mende has won innumerable awards for the
quality of his lighting projects: IALD*, IES* and IEIJ* awards. Important projects. Memorable
ones. All of them with an unmistakable identity: a result that is formally simple, original, with
marked personality, and at the same time imbued with delicacy. And above all, respect for
architecture, for man and for nature.
One finds in Mende, over and above his star-spangled curriculum, his sense of responsibility
to transmit his knowledge and his concrete desire to promote the culture of light.
Witness to this are his altruistic experiments with the non-profit organisation, Transnational
Lighting Detectives and all those activities connected with it, the dozens of his books now
published and his dedication to teaching at the Musashino University of Art, Tokyo University
and the Tokyo University of Art.
His firm, LPA (Lighting Planners Associates Inc.), was founded in 1990 and is currently
divided between two offices, the main one in Tokyo and the other in Singapore. There are
around forty professionals in all, forming a highly multidisciplinary staff. These are people
trained in architecture, interior design, graphic design, visual arts and video and 3D simulation
specialists.
The entire team is dedicated to producing first-class work with the clear intention of
calling attention to lighting design, bringing it to the centre of the discussion table and
promoting sensitivity to it.
During a short break in a seminar, Mende granted us an interview.
a quem todos querem escutar. É o mestre, no sentido amplo do termo.
A atmosfera luminosa
| The Tokyo International Forum complex stands out
amidst the cityscape like a great urban torch. The totally transparent façade of one side of the
building provides a glimpse of the floating structure in the form of a “space-ship” over the gigantic
atrium, the self-supporting, luminous walls of the hall and the floor entirely criss-crossed with
sunken uplights. The luminous atmosphere of this project needed to be beautiful, even with a
relatively small amount of light, and at the same time answer to the work’s functional demands.
In just a few words, how did lighting design come into being
in Japan?
Even before the Edo period (17th C), the Japanese were already using lighting design
with natural lighting. Their answer to “transporting” light into the interior of tiny and traditional
tea houses’ rooms was to use rice paper, shoji, on the walls of these environments.
This material’s properties of permeability and diffusion are such that it constitutes the
primordial element in the voluntary control of light and, therefore, may be considered an
ancestral form of lighting design.
Existe algum aspecto fundamental que faz o lighting design
oriental diferente do ocidental?
clareza as coisas à distância.
Is there any fundamental aspect that makes oriental lighting design
different from occidental?
In my opinion, the difference lies in the dimension whereby things are perceived.
The Japanese came into existence as agricultural people who always devoted a great
deal of attention to manual and precision tasks. Now the occidental universe is that of
hunter, where necessity is to see things clearly at distance. These historical premises
are reflected in the way to approach lighting project. The oriental project tends to pay
a greater degree of attention to detail and the amount of light needed for seeing at
short distances. The occidental project, in its turn, demonstrates more ability on a
larger scale. The climatic “DNA” of a people can also greatly influence their perception
of light, the comfort zone and luminance values.
A definição do lighting concept é o primeiro grande
Your firm executes projects of the most varied kinds. What is the
connecting thread running through them all?
There is no single concept connecting all the different projects, but rather a rigid
and immutable method. The definition of the lighting concept is the first major step
towards the solution. Sharing this with the architect and the client is fundamental. This is a
virtuous triangle. Later come the details of lighting design, of construction and execution so as
to achieve the desired results. There follow the tests, which may be carried out on a 1:1 scale
model or in loco, the overall site supervision to ensure conformity of execution with the project,
and lastly, the fine tuning of the equipment. It is important to bear in mind that the project is
not merely an idea in suspension. It must be grounded in a sound concept, costs, production
scheduling and manufacturing technology.
in a traditionally and culturally rich city, the Kyoto State Guest House is the realisation of a concept termed by Mende
as “Japanese lighting”. In this project, five objectives were pursued: to exalt the wealth of contrasts, to take advantage
of the reflectivity and permeability of the materials, to take into consideration the daylight variations throughout the
day and over the seasons, to choreograph the fields of vision along the main circulation axes and to harness the charm
of natural lighting. The project was carried out with the aid of high-technology optical instruments, with a view to
perfecting the integration of architecture with fixtures. All the equipment was carefully blended into the building
a tradição, a geografia, o clima.
degustar e apreciar o lighting design, a vida seria mais bela!
76
What is the relationship between lighting designers and lighting
firms in Japan?
Lighting design projects are executed only by autonomous professionals. The firms
have available capacity for the development of made-to-measure products. This is
precisely because we, as professionals, ask for solutions going way beyond the currently
available technology. Lighting design is a great fixture itself and not merely yhe
distribution of lighting equipment.
Is there any Japanese or Asian association of lighting designers?
No, but we do need to have one.
L+D
77
How is it that lighting design can improve people’s quality of life?
Lighting design is of a complexity similar to that of gastronomy. One speaks of quality
rather than quantity, of unusual, sophisticated combinations. And, furthermore, as if we
were speaking of how to produce a good wine, we include the culture, tradition, geography
and climate. And if people were really able to savour and appreciate lighting design, life
would be that much sweeter!

danificasse as características árvores do local. Aliado a isto,
A solução
em uma relaxante atmosfera | After eight years of suspension,
the decorative lighting along Omotesando Avenue, in Tokyo,
is back on. Following the example of previous years, LPA
needed a project that would not harm the locale’s characteristic
trees. Along with this grew the idea of reproducing the
atmosphere of the adjacent streets where the Meiji temple
stands. The solution was the temporary substitution of the
street lamps with enormous lanterns lit by LEDs, harking back
to the great Japanese tradition of paper lanterns. The lanterns
are equipped with flickering light sources simulating light
of real candles, and stretch the whole one-kilometre length
of the avenue, bathing the area in an aura of relaxation
BILUNA FLOOR
Prandina
A superfície externa
From among a whole series of new products from Erco, in 2008, for exterior lighting,
we have singled out the Midipoll illuminated bollards. This new series of bollards are
not only powerful instruments for the lighting of surfaces and pathways, but also a
discreet feature in the structuring of open spaces. Their light not only illuminates the
surroundings, but also grazes the surface of the elegant cross-shaped tubular profile,
thus producing a discreet luminance on the bollard itself.
Midipoll lights have IP 65 and are available in versions for two-pin metal vapour
lamps or LEDs.
Conceived by designer Luc Ramael, this new light from Prandina is a floor-standing
version of the pendant light presented at Euroluce 2007. Like the pendant model, the
apparent simplicity of its form holds a surprise in the continuity of the outer surface
of the internal diffuser which, though opaque on the outside, becomes translucent.
The light source is concealed, radiating a soft and even light. The outer surface is of
polyethylene in tones of light grey, sand, or black, while the inner surface, apparently
unbroken, is of translucent methacrylate. It uses a circular fluorescent lamp of 55W,
and a dimmerable model with remote control is available.
