EDITORIAL
Hoje, no entanto, podemos observar
verifica.
No
Já no caso do Marcus Center for the
Boa leitura!
Light has always been a fundamental factor in the design concepts
of museums and exhibitions in general; after all, good lighting permits
the fullest appreciation of the work. Today, therefore, we can see that the role
of light in museums has undergone a change: it no longer serves only as the
means to viewing the works, but, in some cases, becomes a part of the work
or even the work itself.
This edition of L+D brings together several projects in which we can witness
this phenomenon. In the Museum of Football, recently opened in São Paulo,
conventional lighting is accompanied by projected light, both static and dynamic,
as well as the back-lighting used to illuminate photographs. In the equally new
BMW Museum in Munich, the light is materialised as it is incorporated into
the constructional features, such as the huge glass walls lit up with LEDs. In
the case of the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts in Milwaukee, USA, the
lighting designers have reinterpreted the works of artist Georgia O’Keefe and
projected this creation onto the façade, so as to announce the spirit of the
institution to outside observers.
The common chord among these three projects is that, in each case, the
light answers to the functional needs, yet further assumes the role of an active
contributor to the construction of that experience constituted by a visit to a
museum. What a wonderful mission...!
PAVILHÃO DO BRASIL EM
VENEZA
“Out There: Architecture Beyond Building” (“Lá
Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI).
terem sido empregadas somente luzes brancas e azuis. “De onde vem
a luz violeta no pôr-do-sol?
luz branca da halógena está dimerizada, ela fica próxima ao âmbar;
então, acontece esse efeito”, explica o lighting designer.
THE BRAZILIAN PAVILION IN VENICE “From urbanity to intimacy”
was the theme of the Brazilian pavilion it the 11th Venice International
Architectural Show, which came to a close on 23rd November. “Out There:
Architecture Beyond Building” was the theme chosen for the event, which
had as its curator architect Aaron Betsky, ex-director of the Netherlands
Architectural Institute (NAI). “Architecture is not building. Buildings are
objects and the act of building leads us to these objects, but architecture
is something more. It is the way in which we think and talk about constructions,
how we experience them, how we represent them and how
we build them. That is architecture,” Betsky argues.
In keeping with this notion, architect Robert Loeb’s proposal for the
Brazilian pavilion was an exhibition whose focus was not the architecture
itself, but rather the way in which people see the spaces they live in, from
their own homes to their towns. A series of testimonials from lay nonarchitects
was put on show on panels, as well as in a catalogue with a
The lighting project, designed by Guinter Parschalk, stresses the intention
of going beyond just building: “The texts embraced a rather broad sphere,
ranging from architecture per se to urban spaces. The idea was to create
an atmosphere that allowed the visitor to include himself or not within a
constructed context.” Thus, the lighting designer created an atmosphere
to remind one of nature: uplighting with blue fluorescent lamps suggested
the sky, while white lights fitted on the tables played another role, as the
designer explained. “In the table-lamps I used two-pin halogen lamps of
varying brightness (25W, 40W and 60W) so as to give that feeling of looking
at the city from above, from an aeroplane or a hill-top, where you see
some brighter buildings and some darker ones...” The light sources on the
tables also played a functional role, permitting reading of the catalogues
provided. On the walls, the panels were lit with halogen lamps.
The reference to nature behind the lighting project also makes its presence
felt in a small “miracle”, as Parschalk puts it: the violet coloration that
pervades the pavilion’s interior, in spite of the use of only white and blue
lights. “Where does the violet sunset light come from? This is the miracle of
the additive system. From blue, to reach orange, you go through salmonpink,
magenta and violet. It is an optical effect of blue light with amber.
Since the white halogen light is dimmable, it approaches amber, and so
this effect is produced,” explains the lighting designer.
TECNOECOLOGICAMENTE
CORRETO
TECHNO-ECOLOGICALLY CORRECT An environment having flexibility
of use, and combining technological innovation with ecologically correct
design decisions. This is the way to define the Conference Room created
by the firm of Azevedo Arquitetura Corporativa for the event Casa Office,
which took place in São Paulo from 12 November to 2 December. Out of
the conference table-top emerge retractable monitors, so that participants
can closely follow the digital presentations made in a meeting, but the
monitors can also remain unseen, built into the table-top, so as to allow
for other uses of the space – a luncheon, for example. As for ecological
concerns, the architects chose to use timber of certified origin and other
green label products, seeking to minimise as far as possible the project’s
environmental impact. In keeping with this desire, the lighting designers,
Gilberto Franco and Carlos Fortes developed a lighting project penned for its
eco-efficiency, and therefore chose to use only LEDs and fluorescent lamps.
The use of economical solutions, moreover, was combined with a sophisticated
proposal: for the benefit of the occupants, a huge “fake window”
taking up the whole length of one wall. This is composed of two sets of
fluorescent lamps of differing colour temperature (one warm—3,000K—
and the other cool — 6,500K), which are combined with one another in
such a way as to reproduce the tonal variation undergone by daylight in
the course of the day. Over the table, fluorescent lamps are concealed by
the ceiling lining material, which, when lit, reveals an interesting ribbed
texture. The lighting of the table is complemented by eight LED spotlights,
which are also used to produce a grazing effect on the side walls, these
being covered in wood-grain patterned panels. “We managed to achieve
the same visual impact that we usually get with dichroic lamps, only using
instead the LEDs, which have a not-so-cool colour temperature, appropriate
for these surroundings,” states Gilberto Franco.
For its overall excellence, this project was given the award for the most
technological space in the event.
MAM 60 EXHIBITION The São Paulo Modern Art Museum (MAM) is
now 60 years old and, to celebrate its anniversary, is holding an exhibition
of its collection in the Oca building, located close by the museum,
in Ibirapuera Park. With over 500 works on display, the exhibition traces
the path of modern and contemporary art in Brazil, setting out from a nucleus
of historic modernism of the first half of the 20th century through
to present times.
Included in the display, at MAM’s invitation, is the exhibition “Frans
Kracjberg: Nature”, which brings together, in the museum’s basement,
some 65 sculptures and 40 photographs made and selected by the artist,
the forerunner of ecological art in Brazil.
The lighting project of this wide-ranging collection was assigned to
lighting designer Fernanda Carvalho, in close collaboration with Felipe
Tassara’s exhibition design.
Fernanda’s lighting takes advantage of the Oca’s unusual structure,
designed in the 1950s by Oscar Niemeyer: the great white cap covering
the building was used as a huge reflector to diffuse the light throughout
the surroundings.
The lighting designer had already used this principle in another MAM
exhibition in the Oca in 2006, only, at that time, with a different focus, as
Fernanda explains: “I was completely obsessed with the idea that the light
reflected from the dome should be extremely even, without any light spots.
Two years later, I suggested to Felipe that we light the dome unevenly this
time. I thought we could deliberately create light spots, veritable explosions
of light on the ceiling, which would sometimes themselves become gigantic
lamps. And thus we embarked on a new quest, painting bursts of light on
the ceiling in an intensive labour of fine-tuning the light.”
This diffuse light coming from the dome is complemented by lights
pointed at the walls, principally in the areas of low ceiling-height which
the reflected light could not reach.
In the Kracjberg exhibition, the approach is different. “The lighting
mixes an overall wash light with localised spotlighting on the sculptures
and the relief of the walls. The artist himself closely accompanied the task
of lighting, suggesting angles, with a critical eye highly sensitive to the
nuances of light and shadow. For the sculptures, he said, the light should
come from above. The shadows it makes are, in themselves, revealing,”
Fernanda Carvalho explains.
CAMPO ILUMINADO
Assim como a gigante e surreal banana do acampamento, Field of Light
FIELD OF LIGHT Anyone visiting, over the next few months, the Eden
Centre Project in the English county of Cornwall, will get the opportunity
of seeing one of Bruce Munro’s illuminated sculptures. Field of Light has,
since the beginning of November, been installed in the garden-terrace of
the visitors’ centre, where it will remain until March 2009. This sculpture
first came to public notice when a smaller scale version was exhibited in the
Pirelli Garden of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, in 2004.
The inspiration for this project arose during Bruce Munro’s trip through
the Australian Red Desert fifteen years ago. Driving along Stuart Highway,
he stopped nightly at roadside campsites, often contrasting starkly with
the barren desert surrounding them: sprinkler-fed oases of green, each
with a huge sculpture of surreal design and proportions — haply a giant
banana, cucumber or Merino sheep.
Akin to the gigantic and surreal banana of the campsite, Field of Light
is an alien installation intruding in the midst of its natural surroundings.
And like the dry desert seed, awaiting the rain, the fibre optic stems lie
dormant until darkness falls, when they burst out in light.
a fachada do Sesc Pompéia.
movimento, as quais “dobravam” visualmente o espaço, proporcionando
novas leituras do icônico edifício criado por Lina Bo Bardi nos
anos 1980.
MANIPULATING SPACE One of the most outstanding features of the
Sesc Arts Show, taking place from 8th to 18th October in São Paulo, was a
light installation that completely transformed Sesc Pompeia’s façade. Created
by designers Alexander Stublic, Holger Mader and Heike Wiermann,
from Berlin, the Folded Space installation consisted of a projection onto the
façade of two-dimensional, abstract, moving forms which visually “folded”
space, giving rise to new readings of this iconic building, designed by Lina
projection “creates a new layer over the building that floats on the surface
Marton.
visitor’s perception in relation to the spaces,” Marton explains.
Two of the spaces (living-room and dining-room) incorporate pieces
spaces, the designer stimulates the visitor’s senses, using organic, sinuous
and angular forms, as well as effects through reflection, deformation or
impart a feeling of strangeness and instability by interfering with the spaces’
equilibrium,” comments the designer.
SOBRE A LUZ E SUAS SOMBRAS,
CORES, REFLEXÕES...
Elcio Moreno
criar o blog 300.000km/s, no qual publicam as últimas notícias
A idéia é compartilhar as
Lightfair. Apostando neste crescimento, foi inaugurado recentemente na
Al.
do jardim à iluminação pública.
acredita Rodrigo Anzanello, diretor do Light ID.
LIGHT WITH A NEW IDENTITY LEDs are gaining ever more space on the
lighting design scene. Proof of this is in the huge quantity of LED products
launched in this sector’s trade fairs, such as Light and Building and Lightfair.
Counting on this growth, Light ID recently opened, in São Paulo, a new
showroom devoted exclusively to LED lighting, for home and office, for
gardens and public spaces. “A lot of people think that LEDs don’t provide
lighting, and our showroom shows that this is a mistake: it’s possible now
to light a whole house with LEDs as the only light source,” believes Light
ID’s director, Rodrigo Anzanello.
ON LIGHT & ITS SHADOWS, REFLECTIONS, COLOURS... The duo
“information + inspiration” is essential to architects and lighting designers
seeking to develop innovative projects. With this in mind, two lighting
designers living in Barcelona decided to create the blog, 300,000km/s, in
which they publish the latest news from the world of lighting, together
with other timeless notes, such as historical material or inspiring images
that may bring something extra to professionals in the field to help with
their projects.
The relevance of the information — rather than the frequency of its updating
— is the primary criterion for its inclusion in new posts. The idea is
to share information in the clearest and fastest way possible (metaphorically
speaking, at the speed of light, as implied by the site name).
GRAFITTI, LUZ E DESIGN
Dentre as
INSA, a Graffiti Fetish. A peça será produzida em edição limitada (dez
unidades).
luz”. Ainda em protótipo, é uma idéia promissora.
ENERGETIC SEED Energy Seed is a light fixture together with a receptacle
for used batteries, for installation in public spaces. The used batteries
are deposited in the base of the lamp, and their vestigial energy is used
to light the fixture’s LEDS.
This idea, from South-Korean designers Sungwoo Park and Sunhee
Kim, brings us an intelligent solution to three problems: energy economy
in public lighting, the disposal and collection of used batteries, and the
pollution caused by their premature disposal.
Most of the batteries discarded are still not completely discharged. Their
energy may be insufficient to power a digital camera or any other such
equipment, but can still be used to light up LEDs (only about 2V are needed).
Since most discarded batteries still discharge from 0.8V to 1.3V, by using
two or three of these cells together it is still possible to light up a LED.
A timer controls the switching on of the light, programmed for nighttime.
As the power from the batteries is used up, the light dims, a sign
that the batteries should be removed (the battery compartment is opened
with a key).
The appearance of the light reminds one of a pot-plant, which, together
with the way in which the batteries are “planted” in the deposit at the
base, gives people the feeling that they really are “sowing light”. Still in
prototype form , this is a promising idea.
As pilhas usadas
É que desde abril o prédio do Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, projetado
(1923), Blue Flower (1918) e Petunias (1925), forneceram a inspiração
A tecnologia
além do baixo consumo.
the most of the original lines of the building and its integration with Charles
partido da grandiosidade da arquitetura art déco original, eliminando
Miller Square. As well as giving priority to glass as the external cladding
light onto the ceiling, emphasising the tiering of the
material, Munhoz also took full advantage of the grandeur of the original
seating stands and the spaciousness
direito triplo. Embutidas no piso, junto à lateral dos pilares do acesso
art deco architecture, removing concrete slab floors to enlarge galleries
and make a huge entrance hall with a three-storey ceiling height. Built
into the floor, close beside the pillars of the main entrance, metal vapour
lights (CDMT, 150W, 3,000K) highlight the structure and the vast opening
of the entrance. In the galleries where the ceilings are lower, the columns
are treated to the same kind of up-lighting, only with less powerful lamps
(70W). “The lighting favours the awareness of the galleries and of the
openings, as well as helping them to stand out within the façade’s design,”
asserts Mônica. This “fill” lighting of the building’s spaces is complemented
with frontal lighting — made up of four metal vapour spotlights (1,000W),
fixed to an existing post in the square in front — which highlights the central
portion of the façade’s curve, while two other metal vapour spotlights
(2,000W), fitted to two other existing posts at the extremities of the curve
(cross-beams), light the trees covering the slope. “This complementary
lighting permits an appreciation of the building as a whole,” the lighting
director explains.
The round window openings that are scattered over the façades have
their shape emphasised by the light falling on them from fluorescent tubes
(T5, 28 W, 3,000k) installed in fixtures in the upper part of the openings,
between the frames and the internal metal protection screens against
direct sunlight.
Another architectural feature brought out by the lighting project is the
footbridge on the second floor, across the span of the portico that marks
the main entrance. Open to the square, this footbridge constitutes a key
point on the trajectory through the exhibition, since it combines a breathing
space, in which the visitor can gaze out over the city, with a transition
space between two of the museum’s thematic sections, (History and
Entertainment). A long linear bench stretches throughout the length of
the footbridge; behind it, built-in lights with fluorescent tubes (T5, 54W,
3,000K) light the walls and the ceiling of this area, again helping to define
the perception of space in the façade.
Inside the entrance hall, the walls are lined with hundreds of photographs
of personal accessories and of people connected with football; the ceiling,
as throughout most of the museum, is tiered, corresponding to the
underside of the stadium’s seating stands. Within this context, the overall
lighting of the space was carried out so as not to create visual pollution
of the ceiling: spotlights with metal vapour lamps (HCITS, 250W, 3,000K)
were fitted to the concrete pillars, and the ceiling tiers act as a reflector,
returning the light to the surroundings.
Another area very similar to the entrance hall, above all with regard
to the lighting, is the exit lobby, where the same kind of spotlights and
lamps throw the light upwards. The difference here is in the use of circular
aluminium reflectors to return the up-lighting from the spots (with metal
vapour lamps) to the surroundings.
In the daytime, daylight floods abundantly into the hall through the glass
cladding. However, in most of the areas of the museum, sunlight has been
totally excluded in favour of the multimedia resources, which, in themselves,
already light the surroundings. This is the case, for example, in the “Pé na
Bola” [Foot to the Ball] area on the first floor, where an enthralling succession
of video recordings of kids kicking the ball around in a number of
synchronised scenes sets the tone for the museum’s first thematic section
(Emotion). In this area the lighting is limited to LED bollards (2W 3,000K)
lighting the floor and indicating the itinerary to the visitors.
L+D
“A luz privilegia
explica a lighting designer.
o acesso principal.
(História e Diversão). Um extenso banco linear percorre toda a passarela;
Neste contexto, a
Continuing on his route, the visitor goes on to the History section, starting
with the Origins room, a nostalgic space whose walls are covered in
old gilt-framed photographs showing the beginnings of football in Brazil.
The diffused direct lighting is furnished by four huge lighting fixtures (2 x
2 x 0.25m) suspended from the concrete ceiling and beams of the stands.
Made of stretched sheets of translucent PVC and aluminium mouldings, each
fixture has 18 fluorescent tubes (T5, 28W, 3,000K). This large number of
lamps was needed to provide sufficiently even lighting, since the light-box is
only 25 cm deep, requiring closer spacing between the lamps for the line of
each one to be imperceptible. To balance the light’s intensity, dimmers were
needed, and this caused a drop in colour temperature (3,000K) producing
a greyish tone that was duly corrected with gel filters (#204).
In the World Cup room, three-dimensional structures, reminding one of
the shape of a trophy, carry a series of photographs of victories and defeats
from each of the World Cup series, all of these back-lit with fluorescent tubes
(T5, 8W, 2,500K). “This amount of back-lighting provides the surroundings
with a pleasing quality of light. The challenge here was in achieving the
minimum possible depth for the these back-lights. Daniela Thomas’ idea
was for them to look like plasma screens,” recounts Mônica.
Further on, the visitor crosses over the footbridge, mentioned above, on
his way to the Numbers and Curiosities room, which begins the Entertainment
section. Here, rules, stories, statistics and facts connected with the
sport, are presented to the public in the form of games, in a vast threedimensional
almanac. “Daniela Thomas wanted a cheerful atmosphere with
plenty of light,” recounts Mônica, who used a linear system of suspended
fittings for fluorescent tubes, combining direct lighting (T5, 54W, 3,000K)
with indirect (T5, 28W, 3,000K). The former favours the viewing of the
information panels, while the latter, with its light directed upwards, brings
out the pattern of the tiered ceiling. Based on simplicity, this solution was
used in the various parts of the museum not having a two-storey ceiling
height, including the auditorium, as the lighting designer explains: “when
I joined this project, Mauro Munhoz and Daniela Thomas already shared a
strong opinion that every intervention in the museum’s architecture should
share the same language and follow the lines dictated by the architecture
itself. So we came up with this solution of a linear system that can be
modified in accordance with the lighting and architectural needs in each
of the spaces. When we needed local lighting, however, we used halogen
spotlights fitted to the sides of the concrete beams, since the architecture
defined this path for all of the installations. The idea was really to interfere
as little as possible with the architecture and allow all of the structural part
of the museum to make itself apparent”.
In the next room, the Football Dance, huge “balls”, formed by hexagonal
structures, work as multimedia stations showing plays that are veritable
choreographies. Each of these spheres has three halogen lights (AR111,
65W, 24°) lighting the floors around the stations and defining the interior
space, as well as halogen spotlights (AR111, 65W, 8°) indicating the entry
and exit points of this space.
The interactivity is reaches its height in the Body Play room, a section
that brings together activities such as games with virtual balls and “Score a
Goal” where the visitor simulates a free kick against a virtual goal-keeper.
This area also has a vast card index of information on 128 football clubs,
lit with down-lighting from four linear lights, each using three dichroic
lamps (35W, 36°, energy saver).
Next, in the Pacaembu room, the museum pays homage to the stadium
itself, one of São Paulo city’s architectural icons. The story of its construction
is told through video recordings, architectural plans and photographs from
the 1940s and 1950s. The pictures are lit by halogen spotlights (AR111,
65W), with varying beam widths. Since the ceiling of this area corresponds
to the underside of the seating tiers, the spotlights are fitted to the sides of
a sloping beam. So that the resultant light falling on the photos is even, two
different beam angles are used (8° and 24°) according to their height.
The Pacaembu room is the last exhibition room in the Museum of Football.
After finding out so much more about the stadium and having experienced
the emotion, the history and the entertainment furnished by this space
entirely devoted to the country’s most popular sport, the visitor arrives
making it suitable for installations and linking it with an area devoted to the
permanent displays. This new section was housed in an existing single-storey
part of the new museum
uilding, formerly used as a staff living area, conference hall and covered car
park. The building was stripped down to its structural shell and endowed
with a totally new interior with the dynamism its theme demanded.
Adhering to Schwanzer’s original concept, the Atelier Brückner developed
a system of ramps as the project’s main theme, as much with regard to the
architecture as to the exhibition itself. The ramp, a continuous pathway
stretching for about one kilometre, not only leads the visitor all through
the museum, but also connects the new permanent display area with the
Museum Bowl, now devoted to temporary exhibitions.
The new museum not only incorporates the metaphor of the street, as
in Schwanzer’s original plan, but also that of the city itself: the exhibition
halls are distributed all along the ramp and are designated “houses” by the
architects. All of the “houses” are homogeneous boxes with illuminated
façades in white glass; what distinguishes them is the lighting treatment
they are given, image projections and sound, in accordance with each one’s
thematic content — Design, The Business, Motorcycles, Technology, Motor
Sports, Series and The Brand. “Thus the spatial experience is developed
and generated from the specific contents of the exhibition,” explain the
architects, and the visitor is actively involved in the exhibition events, encountering
surprises and fresh emotions throughout his visit.
The heart of the whole new space is the BMW Platz [Square], around
which the “houses” containing the thematic displays are distributed. This
space is repeatedly revisited, from various different points of view along
the visitor’s route. And it is precisely here that a curious light-show takes
place: the architects, along with the firm of ART+COM, transformed the
“houses’ ” façades into huge media panels. Behind the 13m-tall glass panels
are concealed over 1.7 million LEDs, which reproduce video recordings
of abstract and thematic motifs expressing the “pleasure of driving” and
working as a huge index to the whole museum’s contents. In this choreography
of monochromatic white light, some 700m² of façade seem to
make the architecture melt away, immersing the museum in scenic lighting;
this is the scene for the original motor vehicles displayed in the square.
Sport, Séries e A Marca. “Assim, a experiência espacial é desenvolvida e
In spite of its importance in the context of this project, the technology
heart of the new museum: around it are distributed
remains concealed from the visitor’s view: the circuits of white LEDs were
the display spaces — the “houses” — which are
fitted behind double panels of white glass which give the impression of a
“street” dynamics suggested in 1973 by architect
and generous impression, providing support for the “visual transparency”
of the other constructional features.
Among the spatial solutions involving light, the House of Technology
also calls for special attention. Its walls make use of opalescent acrylic
sheets with micro-perforations, back-lit by fluorescent lamps, creating a
somewhat futuristic atmosphere, leading one to an immediate association
with advanced technology, this area’s central theme.
Lighting is again used to create an atmosphere integrated with the thematic
display in the House of Brand. In this space celebrating the BMW
brand phenomenon, posters, printed advertisements and promotional
films, made since the company’s beginnings, are brought together, and
inicial, cuja arquitetura leva a assinatura do escritório Aflalo & Gasperini
América Latina a possuírem a certificação LEED, ou Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design, conferida pela entidade americana United
States Green Building Council (USGBC) e mundialmente aceita e reconhecida.
O projeto luminotécnico do lighting designer Guinter Parschalk
Rochaverá Towers: a “green” lighting approach On 20th
October last, the city of São Paulo witnessed the opening of the first stage
of what is already considered to be the largest complex of de-luxe offices
in Brazil: Rochaverá Corporate Towers. Located on the Pinheiros Marginal
expressway in front of Morumbi Shopping Centre, in the state capital’s
southern zone, this mega-undertaking, by Tishman Speyer, inaugurated, on
this occasion, the first two office towers of the four planned in the original
project, whose architecture bears the signature of the firm of Aflalo &
Gasperini and whose lighting project is designed by the highly experienced
Guinter Parschalk (Studio Ix), whose curriculum includes, amongst other
great works, the lighting design of the Unique Hotel, also in São Paulo.
Conceived as a “green” building — an absolute tendency in the world’s
great centres, not just for environmental appeal, but for real economy
in maintenance and efficiency — the two towers, even on paper, are already
exceptional by being the first in Latin America to receive the LEED
certificate (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), given by the
American organisation, the United States Green Building Council (USGBC),
and receiving world-wide acceptance and recognition. Guinter Parschalk’s
lighting project does not side-step the issue: “architecture is not a lighting
showroom,” he quips, with the trained pragmatism of one who is constantly
handling huge projects and highly innovative concepts.
das mesmas e valorizando a percepção deste volume. Assim, a visão do
neste meio.
No caso do
fluorescentes (T5, 54W, 3.000K) e a vapor metálico (70W, 3.000K) –,
diminui, apenas as lâmpadas fluorescentes permanecem ligadas.
em vidro | In the daytime, the lobby is lit more brightly to avoid
the glare of the daylight flooding in through the glazed façade
“My work always respects the conceptual inspiration of the architects’
proposals, and I try to capture the identity expressed by this. In the case of
the Rochaverá Towers, the challenge was to create lighting that was neutral
and efficient enough to encompass the diversity of companies that usually
occupy a corporate centre, some with a profile of austerity and others more
creative, for example,” the lighting designer explains. “The Rochaverá Towers
has a strikingly innovative lobby: instead of the traditional spotlights,
we find here panels that seem to float in the air and we can’t see, at first,
where the light is coming from,” Parschalk points out. To light this space,
this lighting professional chose to work with two batteries of lamps fitted
strategically within a wooden coving, built specially for this purpose, and
which is itself concealed behind a panel of the same material.
Using a mix composed of two different types of circuits — fluorescent
tubes (T5, 54W, 3,000K) and metal vapour lamps (70W, 3,000K) — these
two batteries work differently in the daytime and at night. In the daytime,
since the Rochaverá Towers lobby is flooded by intense daylight, being clad
externally only by glass walls constituting an enormous transparent skin,
the interior needed more light so as not to be obfuscated by that from
the outside, so both batteries are activated, given that the metal vapour
lamps yield more concentrated power. At night, when the external light
fades, only the fluorescent lamps remain on.
unified concept of reflected light,” states Guinter Parschalk. “Normally, one
works in lobbies with lighting coming from above, so that the ceiling is
darker and the floor fully lit. In the Rochaverá Towers, on the contrary, we
chose to have the light reflected upwards off the plaster panels, so creating
that feeling of them floating in the air and enhancing the perception
of the voluminous space. Thus, the vision of the space is enriched, since
we know that people in the open see better what is above the line of the
horizon,” the designer explains.
All the social areas, like the landscaping, hark back to the idea of reflected
light. Both the elevator lobby and the ground-floor hall received the same
treatment of covings and indirect lighting, while the hall of the typical floor
was treated to a simplified version of the same idea. On the modular typical
floors, the lighting designer used twin-parabolic lights with fluorescent
tubes (T5, 28W, 4,000K) and a plaster ceiling with a raised centre and a
coving to play the light directly onto the centre.
Another of Parschalk’s concerns in working out the Rochaverá Towers
lighting project was the use of materials giving priority to three attributes
of efficiency, namely energy conservation, low heat output and ease of
maintenance. “Maintenance cannot be allowed to turn into a problem;
the material used has to have a long life-span,” points out the lighting
designer, who chose, in the batteries of lights in the lobby, to use highly
efficient imported T5 lamps which last from 20-24 thousand hours with
an output of 100-105 lumens per watt — the latest generation of lamps,
requiring special ballasts, without which they will not yield the manufacturer’s
specified output. In the lobby, as well as the fluorescent tubes, the
lighting designer also used metal vapour lamps and, on the typical floors,
special halogen lamps (with a life-span of up to 10 thousand hours). Furthermore,
the towers have an automation system, for local and elevator
lights, which enables optimal use of these, and also local lights with pres-
Space, perception and efficiency
The Rochaverá Corporate Towers architectural project suffered modifications
along the way, due to contingencies such as material costs. Originally,
the lobby was to have an illuminated ceiling, with a sheet of translucent
white PVC forming a white-faced light-box. The alteration demanded an
exceptional lighting project, with the indirect lighting installed within the
covings, and plaster panels acting as reflectors. “I was working within a
ence sensors, giving reduced consumption, since they cut down the time
for which the external lights remain switched on.
Towards “greener” lighting
According to Parschalk, the architectural and landscape projects for the
Rochaverá Towers simplified the task of conforming to the demands of
“green” legislation. “I had to make remarkably few adaptations to conform
to the LEED certificate requirements. The Canadian landscaper, Pamela
Johnson’s project already incorporated a useful alternative proposal for
the lighting, the idea of down-lighting using suspended LEDs (PAR20, 5W,
3,000K; PAR30, 9W, 3,000K), as well as lamp-posts with metal vapour
lamps fitted pointing downwards, an inversion of the normal practice in a
building’s external areas. Since this kind of certificate restricts the amount
of light projected skywards, — only 5% in the external areas — I had to
make few changes in terms of power, simply adjusting the limits of luminous
density in these places,” Parschalk states.
“In the area dedicated to the offices, I kept to the norm required by Brazilian
legislation, working with twin-parabolic lights with fluorescent tubes
(T5, 28W, 3,000K), which produce the equivalent of 500 lux/m²,” points out
the lighting designer. “My preference was to use plaster or modular ceilings
in these open areas, with even overall lighting, so as not to interfere with
the intentions of the future occupants. The main idea here was flexibility,
together with low costs and economy, conforming to the legislation,” the
specialist wraps up. (By Márcia Bechara)
do Rochaverá facilitaram a adequação à exigente legislação verde. “Precisei
projeto luminotécnico, conforme explica o designer Edwin Smida, do
PRAGMATIC AND IMPOSING To create a space devoted to knowledge,
to innovation and to meetings. With this aim in mind, the pharmaceutical
group, Novartis, is transforming its premises in Basle, Switzerland,
from an industrial site into a complex of research facilities with the widest
variety of types of buildings. The most recent addition to the complex is
the Krischanitz building, arising out of an unusual demand on the part of
the client. The firm requested that the building offer quality infra-structure
for the day-to-day activities of research, whilst simultaneously housing
other representative functions for the entire campus, such as receptions,
meetings or conferences. The Austrian firm, Krischanitz, responsible for
the architectural project, resolved the matter by grouping all these spaces
together around a splendid atrium on the ground-floor, with flexible spatial
fabric and an generous glazing. The four upper floors of the building, for
their part, house the functional laboratories.
This duality between the functional and the symbolic is carried over
into the lighting project, as lighting designer Edwin Smida, from the firm
of Licht Kunst Licht, explains: “In developing the lighting design we were
L+D
confronted with two conflicting requirement profiles. While the laboratories
had to fulfil predominantly technical needs and thus followed standard
stipulations the public spaces on the ground floor were to appear exquisite
and sumptuous”. A comprehensive, yet differentiated design approach
was essential. The interface between these two worlds is the atrium, for
which a very specific lighting solution was evolved, so as to bring out the
architect’s central concept: the luminous balustrade was one of the most
challenging tasks in the whole project, and accordingly treated as “art for
architecture”.
The building’s atrium acts as a huge light-well, with daylight flooding into
the area through the glazed roof. Furthermore, it is as if this space were
a huge light-sculpture: the parapets of each of the floors emanate light
over the whole of their external surfaces, since they are planked with semitransparent
acrylic panels with a white screen print. Forming a grid of 80 x
80mm, around ten thousand LEDs (0.4W) are fitted behind these translucent
panels to make a perfectly homogeneous surface of light. The panels are
pivoting, so as to facilitate maintenance of the LEDs, as necessary.
Within the atrium, the spatial impression is variable: with or without
backlighting, both effects are pleasing to the eye. With the LED lighting,
the parapets have a sculptural impact; when the panels are switched off,
on the other hand, the surrounding covings are lit, making each floor
stand out individually.
The galleries surrounding the atrium are lit with emphasis from a coving
with T5 fluorescent tubes. Beneath the glazed roof, fitted 28cm above
the floor, downlights using metal vapour lamps project a directional light
strong enough to reach the ground-floor.
On the ground-floor, bearing in mind the client’s request for a particularly
representative spatial framework within this area, the lighting designer created
rectangular lighting objects of 3.5 x 5.5m, which emanate the solemn
splendour of chandeliers. This solution was inspired by experiments using
laboratory test-tubes: the piece is composed of 360 glass cylinders, of
which 50 were fitted with QT12 lamps (CRI, 25W) on two different levels.
The result is a sparkling twinkle of light points along the whole length of
the 50cm glass tubes. In addition, 28 halogen lamps (QT12, 50W) are fitted
in spotlights. These create a palpable directional light within the space
and thus provide the necessary levels of illumination for the conference
and meeting tables. The lights’ components can be switched and dimmed
independently and thus the conference halls can be immersed in different
lighting moods.
In the laboratories, in order to deal with the problem of the constant
noise level of the equipment, without recourse to commercial acoustic
panels, the designers invented an acoustically efficient light fixture, designed
on the basis of a patent belonging to Sector 4, of Zurich. These
new lights not only supply the specified luminance of 500 lux for normal
tasks, but also act as “illuminated tiles”, furnishing the space with a visual
lightness and dynamism.
This light fixture has a honey-comb textured cover, whose geometry controls
glare and is acoustically absorbent as the result of micro-perforations
that are invisible to the naked eye. The lighting and acoustic equipment
is fitted in such away that it is easily interchanged with the neighbouring,
perforated metal panels, as may be necessary. The perforations in the
neighbouring ceiling panels were designed to make them similar in texture
training course in architecture or lighting design until I started working with
this and needed diplomas to prove my knowledge. I am self-taught, and the
courses I took helped me mainly with matters of bureaucracy!
How is it possible to learn by yourself in an environment that
neither values nor understands the area? Where did you seek
your references?
As I said, the lack of esteem and understanding of lighting design in Spain
was really my starting point. I had an idea I was interested in, but I didn’t
know exactly what it was, since I had never heard the term “lighting design.”
I was never aware of entering the “world of lighting design.”
My first references came from my own observation of the power of light
as an element to improve the quality of spaces. Of course, in the course of
my professional development I came to know distinguished lighting designers,
but that was much later on!
Everything to do with my activities with light was developed in a rather
personal way. I only found out that lighting design really existed as a profession
when I went to Argentina. It was there that I heard for the first time
names like Piero Castiglioni [Lierna, Italy, 1944], for example.
What was your experience in Argentina like? What did you bring
back from this experience abroad?
The main legacy of my experience in Argentina was an understanding of
the profession. There I came to know the foundations of my professional
development: for the first time I heard tell of things like calculation software,
lighting awards, conferences and specialised academic studies.
At that time (1988), lighting design was more developed in Argentina
than in Spain, especially in terms of the understanding of just where this
kind of work fits into the architectural process. And even today, I see far
more general interest and a deeper level of research into light and lighting
there. It’s true that they have gone through a profound economic crisis and
their architecture has suffered as a result. But now development is back and
there continue to be far more academic and professional opportunities there,
thanks to a stronger tradition in this area.
Since Spain has no tradition of lighting design, where did your
interest in working with light and architecture come from?
My interest is related to the ability of light to reveal spaces. I used to observe
lighting situations which could be improved in relation to the spaces
in which they were applied and I wanted to do something about it. The fact
of there being no lighting design culture in Spain opened up for me the
possibility of developing my own creativity in this field.
To be honest, this process began when I was working in my father’s electrical
storage. This was my first direct contact with light sources. And what
I noticed was the lack of creative applications for really interesting means
of revealing spaces. This paradox made me think that I could, perhaps, do
something about it, since I had always had a taste for creative activities and
for design in general.
So I started investigating, observing and studying on my own. I used to look
up information in engineering and lighting manuals, for example. I took no
L+D
79
a expressão “lighting design”. Não tinha consciência de estar entrando
no “mundo do lighting design”.
Minhas referências iniciais vieram da observação do potencial da luz
How do you explain the lack of a lighting design tradition in Spain?
This is clearly no simple question. I believe that Franco had a lot to do
with it. During his dictatorship, there were filters for information reaching
Spain. The growing new tendencies in Europe and the rest of the world were
blocked at our frontiers. Franco’s period can be described as the domination
of functional intentions over creative intentions.
It’s clear that this was an indirect process, and I’ve been reflecting on a
temporal gap that lasts through time. Even so, I see a powerful connection
between this recent historical moment of our country and the lack of interest
in lighting as a creative design process.
No doubt, the excess of natural light in Spain has also had its influence.
This is one of the reasons why there is little need for — and therefore little
interest in – investigating artificial light in depth. Not only is lighting design
influenced by this, but also architecture itself. Natural, rather than artificial
light is traditionally a powerful feature in Spanish architecture. Spanish
architects are outstanding in their control of daylight and apply this as an
architectural tool.
What was it like trying to introduce into Spain the figure of the
independent lighting designer? What kind of obstacles did you
have to surmount?
The main obstacle was the lack of understanding of what was meant by
lighting design. It’s easy to walk into a meeting and say: “Nice to meet you,
I’m an architect.” But it wasn’t at all an easy thing to introduce myself as a
lighting designer. The usual reaction was: “What do you mean by that?”
The first challenge I came up against was to demonstrate that my activity
did, in fact, exist. I had to explain just what it consisted of and how it could
be developed. It often happened that the architects asked me for my qualifications
and diplomas to ascertain the feasibility of working together, and
A dinâmica
de sombra trabalhados em torno dos bancos e entre as árvores | In the Paseo del Óvalo, the architecture offers unity and light is the
How important was the prize-winning Paseo del Óvalo project,
in Teruel, to your work?
As for the project itself, we paid a great deal of attention to the question
of visual appreciation. The relationships between uses, functions and visual
approaches were the basis for the lighting design, which played on light and
shadow. And our work received considerable recognition. In addition to the
European Prize for Urban Public Space (2004), we were also honoured with
the special merit prize of the International Association of Lighting Designers
(IALD). For us, this latter was far more significant, since it is a lighting award.
It was the first lighting award given to a Spanish designer and the first project
in Spain to receive such an award!
interrelationships. Setting out from an understanding of the artists and of
their works, it became possible for us to develop a light concept that was
both coherent with them and also with the exhibition space. It’s important
to underline the close relationship we maintained with the architects. They
had very clear intentions about the design of the space and understood the
important influence that would be exercised by light. This led to a fluid process
developing between our team and theirs. Our intention was to communicate
the works of art through the creation of a museum atmosphere that included
the spatial arrangement, the material surfaces and the light. We developed a
lighting concept that had as its source of inspiration the light of the art works
themselves. Rhythm was the key word, and so we worked with contrasts,
shades of colour, lights and shadows. We managed to create a discourse,
that was both architectural and luminous and immersed people in a total
experience in relation to the exhibition’s content. This was a very special
project and the result was recognised with the first prize in the 2008 Lamp
Awards. This award, by the way, given by a Spanish firm, is also a reflection
of the development of the field in Spain. (By Joana Canêdo)
piso junto aos sofás | The interior lighting of this
vast hotel entrance-hall differentiates the multiple
spaces with a light-play on the vertical and oblique
planes, sustaining through the night the sensations
provided by natural daylight through the skylights.
Despite the feeling of grandeur, the lighting still
conveys comfort, thanks to the standard lamps next
to the couches
The “Hammershøi and Dreyer” exhibition (CCCB, Barcelona, Jan.
- May, 2007) was, no doubt, a rare opportunity in museum design.
Tell us a little about that experience.
The first step was an exercise in understanding the role that light played
for the painter (Hammershøi) and for the film director (Dreyer), and their
Kxdesigners
A valorização
É importante sublinhar a
nossa equipe e a deles.
o primeiro prêmio do 2008 Lamp Awards.
luzes e sombras. E nosso trabalho foi extremamente reconhecido.
Pois, além do European Prize for Urban Public Space (2004), foi-nos
of Lighting Designers (IALD).
A grande luminária cúbica, do designer Antoni
prêmio Lights of the Future 2008.
