impacts they can generate on the environment and
human life.
According to the 2017 UN World Water Development
Report, more than 80% of the world’s urban and
industrial wastewater – and more than 95% in some
less developed countries – is released into the environment
without treatment. The constant growth of the
world population, the inauguration of new manufacturers,
the increase in agriculture, livestock, and mining
activities contribute to the worsening of the scenario,
threatening the drinking water supply quality.
Ferreira Neto explains that the study conducted in
partnership with USP represents a significant advance
in developing technologies for the simultaneous removal
of organic and inorganic contaminants from water
to promote its purification. Also, they can be essential
tools for effluent treatment plants in the textile and
leather companies in the State of São Paulo.
The scientist intends to test the effectiveness of the
new membrane to degrade other substances, such as
medicines and pesticides.
