Compilamos o
mapeamento digital
de todas as florestas
plantadas do Estado de
Santa Catarina
no país.
Fomos pioneiros e a ideia é continuar
nessa toada.
Nossa principal
problema é o seguinte: hoje a competitividade dessas áreas
Nosso objetivo
nossa base de dados e entender qual é o movimento do segmento
catarinense para os próximos anos.
The mapping of planted forests in the State of
Santa Catarina, carried out by Udesc, in partnership
with the Santa Catarina Association of Forest
Companies (ACR), was conducted between 2018
and 2019. What were the main conclusions of the
Study in the State?
The Study included an unprecedented survey within
the State of Santa Catarina Forestry Sector. We
performed a mapping with an accuracy nine times
more assertive than other initiatives in Brazil, which
used different technologies to scan several regions
within the Country. We outlined the planted forest
areas thoroughly, mainly a detailed study of forests
occupied by eucalyptus, a survey until then non-existent
for the State. We were pioneers, and the idea is
to continue this work.
What technologies were used to map the forestry
activities in the State?
Some of the most advanced technologies in the geoprocessing
of planted forests. We obtained remote
sensing systems and the computational division
technique with random forests. We compiled the
digital mapping of all planted forests in the State of
Santa Catarina. Our main conclusion was that there
are 828.9 thousand hectares of planted forests in the
State, predominantly pine and eucalyptus.
Should forestry in the State of Santa Catarina be
restricted only to pine and eucalyptus, or can it
expand its operations to other species?
Forest-based companies have adopted an expansion
policy for other species, so they tend to conserve
existing ones and perhaps expand their operations.
But the problem is this: today, the competitiveness
of those areas occupied by pine, which is a more prolonged
cycle forest, ends up losing space, and investors
end up prematurely cutting down these forests
to migrate the land to the planting of corn and other
agribusiness crops. Our goal is to start another stage
of the Study, based on the last months of 2020 and
the first half of 2021, updating our database and
understanding the changes in the State’s segment in
the coming years.
Does the State of Santa Catarina have the potential
to be one of the forestry powers in Brazil?
Pine production in the State of Santa Catarina is
already impressive, as well as that in the entire
Southern Region of Brazil. But if we think about
other species, it will all depend on aligned and
well-implemented public policies. We have to make
forest properties into a kind of company and be well
managed. Generally, we have noticed a disinterest
of later generations, who leave the interior of Santa
Catarina for the big city, and do not continue the
forest practice initiated by their parents. We need to
