Although the calves initially showed Aujeszky anti-virus antibody titres, the Aujeszky anti-virus
postvaccinal immune response was enhanced in the case of the group supplemented with Sel-Plex.
The average anti-Aujeszky virus postvaccinal antibodies titre (1.670) increased by 47.00 % compared
to group C (1.136), datas are pesented in the table 1 and Fig 3.

These results indicate that the humoral immune response of calves may be depressed by
marginal selenium deficiency and enhanced by organic selenium supplements. Whether this is due to
the direct involvement of the selenium in the immune response or to a more indirect effect the
nutrient may have on metabolic processes is unknown. The exact role of selenium in immunological
mechanisms has not been defined but its effect on the humoral immune response may be secondary.
The humoral antibody response is dependent on the proper presentation of the antigen to B-
cells by T-cells and/or macrophages. The organic selenium may stimulate the humoral immune
response through its direct involvement with T-cell and effector cell function. However, further
studies need to be performed to determine the actual mechanism involving selenium
with the immune response.
