MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a relatively new diagnostic technique. First clinical MR
examination was done in THE eighties. With the time MR (magnetic resonance) examination
became the primary imaging modality of diagnostic and staging of many diseases because of high
resolution, soft tissue characterization and multiplanar capabilities. It may also provide both
morphological and functional information.
Key words: MRI, dogs, TSE
MATERIALS AND METHODS
With the purpose to evaluate the role of MRI in clinical management and treatment options in
various pathological conditions in dogs, we performed a study on 28 dogs, 17 male, 11 female with a
mean age of 6.5 years witch underwent MR examination between Ian 2008 – March 2008. All MR
examination was done after clinical evaluation and X-ray examination.
All MR examination was done on a one point five (1.5) Tesla machine using dedicated coils
according to the region of interest. There were twenty-two MR examinations of spine, 2 whole-body
MR examinations, 1 head examination, 1 for knee, 1 for neck and one for pelvis.
The MR protocol consisted in T1 TSE (Turbo Spin Echo) and T2 TSE sequences in all three
perpendicular imaging planes, sagital, coronal, axial. In some cases we used T1 fat suppressed
sequences after gadolinium administration.
T2 TSE sagital T1 TSE sagital T1 TSE coronal T2 TSE axial
Based on the MR results, a second evaluation of the treatment management was made and
the treatment options (before and after MR examination) were compared.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
We had: eleven cases of disco-vertebral degenerative changes, three cases of inflammatory
intramedullary changes, three soft-tissue tumors, three bone tumors, three posttraumatic lesions,
two intramedullary tumors, one discospondylitis, two normal.
There is a case of a dog, male, 8 years old, with the clinically and radiologicaly suspicion of disc
herniation. MR examination revealed multiple metastases in the vertebral body at the L6-S1 levels
and in the limph nodes. The metastasis from the vertebral body extends in the spinal canal with the
invasion of nerves routes (Fig. 2).
