《红星浙江教育指南》编辑按语 :

Welcome to the first edition of REDSTAR’s Zhejiang Education

Guide featuring the best in international education from

Hangzhou and beyond for 2019/20. After producing this

guide’s sister edition in Shandong for the past ten years, coupled

with the successful launch of REDSTAR Hangzhou City Guide in

October 2018, we were inspired to produce our inaugural education

guide for Hangzhou and the surrounding area. This debut edition

features a comprehensive list of school guides, profiles and useful

articles to help and inspire you to choose the next step in your

child’s academic journey.

From preschool to university, our time spent at school is a period

where we get to grow, learn and develop our minds. As a rite of

passage in everyone’s life, school also provides the opportunity for

parents to proudly watch on as their children progress and mature

into bright, talented, conscientious young adults.

This guide has been put together to inform and enlighten our

readers on the field of education—whether you are a teacher, a

parent or just someone that is interested in learning more about

education and upbringing, including such topics as teaching

methods, parenting tips and child psychology. We have also

provided a handy schools comparison table, which includes

information on individual schools’ curriculum, facilities, fees, staff

size, etc. So, you are fully informed when it comes to choosing the

right school for your child.

The first edition of the Zhejiang Education Guide also features

articles from our diverse and talented international community in

Hangzhou. These features include, how to encourage reading in a

technological world; preparing children for a big move; choosing

the right international school; understanding the ‘Language

Learning Process’; selecting the right college, and an artwork

feature.

The team at REDSTAR hope that you all enjoy reading this 21stcentury

guide to education in Hangzhou and Zhejiang, as much as

As we continue to challenge

our students to think

about what it means to

be learners in today’s society,

we find that not only must

our students change, but also

that our teachers’ and parents’

perceptions of what learning is

must change.

Where learning from previous

generations meant answering

the asked questions at a

level high enough to get the

passing mark, that concept has

changed in today’s educational

approaches.

Our students at HIS are

challenged not just to have a

high level of knowledge, but to

apply that knowledge effectively

to new situations. They must

take the knowledge and actually

do something with it.

Sometimes that means asking

the right kind of questions;

sometimes it means finding

the right type of information

that can provide evidence for

an argument; sometimes it

means listening and responding

with personal experiences that

influence others’ understanding.

Our students are challenged to

take the knowledge that came

before and to do something

with it - above and beyond just

spouting back the knowledge,

our students have to use math

to investigate patterns, design

experiments to agree with or

disprove scientific theories, and

argue the efficacy of certain

advertising campaigns.

Michael Stevens, a YouTube

educator from Vsauce1 channel,

encourages everyone to keep

asking questions, not only to

find answers but to broaden

their understanding of the way

the world works. Questions are

at the heart of learning and

ensure that the learner both

gains understanding and puts

the learning into a context of

personal relevance.

Our Grade 12 students are

preparing for their Theory of

knowledge (TOK) presentation -

a discussion of what it means to

know something in connection

with several other ideas. But

primarily, it is an assignment

that challenges the student to

ask questions, think about how

or why the answers might be

accessible, and then to connect

those questions and ideas to

other topics.

Another TED talk, this time given

by Naomi Oreskes, a Harvard

professor of science, discusses

how knowledge can be gained

through collaborative scepticism

and collective scrutiny.

When we think of scientists, we

often think about the boiled

down sound bytes that we

learned in Grade 7 - Newton’s

second law - rather than about

the process of what it took

for everyone to agree that the

law was indeed law and could

not be refuted under different

conditions or situations. And,

perhaps, this is the biggest

change of knowledge and

and authorities they can access

from the internet, our students

tackle high-level thinking

processes daily in ways that we

don’t even always realise.

And yet, they are still children,

who make mistakes or do

something inappropriate, just

because they can. They are

learning from these mistakes

and learn both how to recover

from their errors and how to

do it better the next time an

opportunity comes around.

The benefit of learning is asking

questions diligently until you get

the correct combination of who

you are asking, what you are

asking and when you are asking

in order to achieve an answer

that is meaningful.

guidance as students continue

on their quest.

The Big Move

A rough guide on how to prepare your child as they

change schools or locations

如何帮助孩子在转校或搬家时做好准备

的简明指南

Moving is becoming new

normal, and many families

find themselves relocating

throughout their lives. The

move may be due to a housing

upgrade, a breakdown of marital

relations, career or educational

opportunities. But whatever

the reason, many families move

once, twice, or sometimes even

more.

As a kid, I was haunted by

the prospect of moving; the

thought of changing houses,

schools, friends, towns, cities,

and countries terrified me.

Naturally, moving is stressful at

any age and since many experts

consider routine and consistency

to be one of the most important

contributions to a child’s

happiness. Thankfully, Hangzhou

is filled with many expat families

who have successfully relocated

their families thousands of miles.

Bethan Amena is one of these

people; a librarian at Wellington


SCHOOL FEATURE

College Hangzhou who moved

with her husband and two sons

(aged five and nine) in July

2018. She explained how she

prepared her kids for the move.

Amena always knew that she

wanted to take her children

abroad; a third-culture kid

herself, she credits her resilient

and open nature to the fact

she lived in Canada, Nigeria,

and the UK, all before she was

eight years old. Amena wanted

her children to have the same

experiences as her, gain worldclass

educations, to explore

new cultures and countries, and

broaden their horizons. So, here

are some ideas from Amena

to help ensure the move goes

smoothly.

Before: Involve Your

Children in the Move

“We knew for a very long time

that we wanted to move and

work overseas and so I made

sure we talked about it often

and involved the children in the

planning process. When it was

time to go for job interviews

they knew and were able to

be part of the anticipation

and excitement. I think that

because we stayed positive

and excited about it, that

helped relax the boys and they

mirrored our actions. When my

husband, Darren, got the job [at

Wellington College International

Hangzhou], we told the boys

straight away. Over the next few

weeks, I took them to the library

to get books about China to

show them. Bedtime was usually

the time when the emotions

and worries came out, so we

allowed more time for this in the

routine".

"Kids have very few belongings

that they actually own, so I

felt it was very important to

let them feel in control of their

toys and books. We explained

that we couldn’t take all of our

belongings with us, so we had a

good sort-out and the children

helped to pack toys. I packed

other toys and put them in

'storage' or to be looked after

by family members. I tried to

keep the whole experience as

positive as possible, so they

did not feel as though we were

throwing away their belongings,

as I thought this would make

it a negative and traumatic

experience".

"We made sure we had a home

to come to, the school had

given us a number of options

for housing and one involved

staying in a hotel, to begin with.

We felt we needed to settle

them in as soon as possible and

so we chose the family complex

and made sure they had a

bedroom each, as they did in

the UK. They were each allowed

to bring a certain amount of

their favourite cuddly toys

and we also brought their own

bedding and pillows from their

bedrooms. We made sure we

had their regular breakfast cereal

for the mornings and kept the

same bedtime routine as always.

It was hard, but because it was

important, we made time for it”.

Listen to concerns and try to

come up with solutions together.

We read stories together and

talk about our feelings. We

call home regularly. Some of

the older children I know have

connected with their friends

through online games and we

use WeChat to call friends back

home. We have also allowed

plenty of opportunities to

create new friendships here in

China and stay positive about

the future. Having one-toone

time with our children is

important as well. We make

sure we spend time as a family

at meal times and each talk

about our day. We also take

the kids out separately, so they

can have some individual time

with us and that gives us an

opportunity to bond and talk".

Editor Tips:

Create a visual countdown

Think advent calendar, but for

moving. This gives them some

control over timing.

Plan the ‘right time’ to

move

This may not be possible, but

if you are able to, it’s best

to move during the summer

holiday.

Speak to schools on both

ends

Communicate your intentions

and worries in order to make

an exit and entry game plan

tailored to your child’s needs.

Make a bucket list

Plan places to visit and things

to do before leaving. This

makes it exciting, but it also

allows your children to say

goodbye to what’s important

in their own way.

Have them write down

questions

Kids are curious and will

probably have questions

about the move you haven’t

even thought of.

Make a scrapbook

Before you move, include

pictures of friends, family, and

teachers in a scrapbook.

Pack an ‘essentials box’

Have them pack a box of

whatever they think is most

important. Promise them it

will either stay safe or come

with you on the move.

Reach out

Contact other expat families

associated with your child’s

future school. Have your

children talk/Skype/WeChat

prospective classmates and

friends.

Visualise their new home

If possible, have them see their

future room/home so they can

get excited for decorating it

and also get a feel for where

they will be living.

Emphasise goodbyes

Most importantly, carve out

enough time for them to say

their goodbyes in their own

time and own way.

No matter how much you plan

and prepare your children

for a big move, there will

definitely be unexpected

issues that arise. The most

important thing to do

beforehand is to understand

your child’s needs and

personality in order to best

prepare for their reactions.

Bridging the gap between

old and new lives is easier

with social media and apps,

but it’s still imperative to

communicate with your

children throughout the entire

process. Creating positivity

and excitement for the

upcoming change is the best

way to combat the negative

effects of moving, such as loss

of identity or a fear of forming

long-lasting relationships.

终其一生四处搬家。搬家可

能是由于房屋升级换代、婚

姻关系破裂、职业或教育机会。但无

论原因为何 , 诸多家庭搬了一次、两

次甚至有时搬了多次。

当我还是个孩子的时候 , 我总是

受到搬家后前景的影响 ; 一想到要换

房子、学校、朋友、小镇、城市和国家 ,

我就感到十分害怕。当然 , 因为许多

Scaffolding Instructions and the

Language Learning Process

支架式教学及语言学习过程解析

remember the first day of my

CELTA (Certificate in Teaching

English to Speakers of Other

Languages) (teacher) training

at Saxoncourt, a University of

Cambridge-approved training

centre in London, UK. It was

a balmy, sunny day in August

2008. In the very first class,

right after self-introductions,

we were assigned a task and

then divided into two groups

afterwards. Both groups were

given measuring tools and

the task was to measure the

distance between two points

on a map. Our tutor, a brilliant,

6” 2’, lanky man with a ginger

beard in his late 40s, due to

unknown reasons, left us on our

own while he attended to the

other group, providing them

with more detailed explanation

and assistance. Unsurprisingly,

they completed their task

effortlessly. Lo and behold, we

could not. We were told later of

the motives behind his ‘unfair’

treatment of our group. It was

a well-intentioned one though

and since the reasons do not

fit into the scope of this article,

I will have to reserve it for

another day.

as scaffolding pedagogy in

language learning. As soon as

the works are completed and

the building can stand on its

own, the scaffolding is removed.

In a similar vein, the beams

and supports in instructional

scaffolding is taken away once a

student has gained competency

or mastered a language skill.

In order to reinforce

understanding, enhance

mastery and build skills, I make

it a point of duty to incorporate

some scaffolding strategies

in my lesson plans. Below are

some of the most common

ones I have employed when

teaching International English

Language Testing System (IELTS),

International English Language

Testing System (IELTS), Language

Arts, English for Specific Purpose

(ESP), Cambridge Teaching

Knowledge Test (TKT) and other

teacher training courses.

Show and tell - ‘I Do, We Do,

You Do’

This is the most common form

of instruction in scaffolding, and

it is commonly referred to as a

gradual release of responsibility.

Typical steps are as follows:

1. Teacher shows what to do

by demonstration: "I do it".

2. Teacher and student go

through together: "We do it".

3. Student practises doing

it: "You do it".

In one of our IELTS classes, a

student in a mini VIP group was

finding paraphrasing statements,

from given prompts, in writing

task 1 overwhelming even after

explanation, instruction and

drilling.

Consequently, this prompted

reviewing the steps involved

with the student twice. To prove

that paraphrasing is indeed

not as daunting as what he

thought, I had to write the first

few words of the topic sentence

on the board. I could see how

delighted he was seeing it is

not that hard. I encouraged him

to come up with the remaining

part which he did with some

assistance in the form of eliciting

and concept checking. I did

the same with the rest of the


sentences in the first paragraph.

After a little more practise, he

became proficient at penning

complex sentences, and six

months later, he aced his IELTS

with an impressive 7.0 average

(achieving 6.5 points in writing).

Guided practice

It is imperative for language

educators to not only provide

opportunities for students

to practise, but also to do it

correctly, so they can internalise

what has been learnt. One way

to do this is to provide focused

support for learners who

need extra assistance so they

can reach the learning goals.

Guiding instructions can be in

form of reminders, questions,

cues, prompts, explanations

and modelling. While providing

guidance, teachers should try

as much as possible to elicit,

concept check and correct

students’ mistakes as this fosters

skills development and mastery.

Some examples of guided

practice

1. Learners follow guided

reading procedures as

they are instructed by their

teacher.

2. Learners practise reading or

writing with the help of the

teacher.

3. Learners edit and rewrite

an essay as per teacher’s

feedback.

Pre-teach vocabulary

The traditional way is to explain

or have students look up

difficult words in the dictionary.

This can be confusing as well

as frustrating for learners, if for

instance, a word has several

meanings or the L1 (Chinese)

translation is not accurate. The

good news is, with scaffolding

instructions, the teacher can

make understanding words’

meanings more fun through

contexts. The teacher can

also use a spider diagram. For

example, the teacher writes one

of the keywords in the spider

diagram on the board and then

have students brainstorm other

words, that come to mind. This

way they can learn other related

words via synonyms, antonyms,

prefixes and suffixes, thereby

expanding their vocabulary and

understanding the words indepth.

Plus, it’s more fun!

Personal connections

Teachers can help students

take advantage of the concepts

and skills they have previously

learnt to complete a task that

has to do with their personal

experiences. For example, a

teacher can encourage students

to use a grammatical structure

(e.g. past simple tense) and

relevant vocabulary studied in

a previous class to describe

a memorable holiday before

teaching another grammatical

item (e.g. present perfect).

This kind of instruction helps

students to build on their prior

knowledge and consequently,

increases competency. Moreover,

by incorporating personal

interests and experiences in a

lesson, learners can connect

what has been studied to their

private lives.

To wrap up, I strongly believe

classes filled with very diverse

learners warrant different

scaffolding instructions, and

if properly administered and

monitored, students stand to

gain a lot. Most students will

thrive in this sort of learning

environment, mainly because

they can take charge of their

learning process with time.

However, it is imperative to

observe and ask questions of

your students to really determine

their amount of comfort in

order to know if they require

additional support scaffolding in

order to be successful.

Music is a Family Affair

My husband and I met at

a now-defunct live music

venue in Hangzhou: he, a

Chinese singer-songwriter and

me, an American journalist who

went out every week to hear live

music. So, when our daughter

was born almost seven years

ago, we wanted to share with

her the love of music that had

brought us together. But to our

disappointment, we found that

while the past 30 years have

transformed China, children’s

music here has remained almost

in a time warp. Our kids are

still singing the same tired folk

songs that my husband sang as

a child.

That’s why we started our

Hand in Hand International

Children’s Music Festival, China’s

first international music festival

meant for the whole family. Our

dream was simple. We would

bring the coolest bands for

kids from around the world to

perform for families in China.

We knew that Chinese families

understood the value of music

education for their children,

but we had also noticed that

there was a focus on intense

musical training and not enough

emphasis on the foundations of

music appreciation and enjoying

music for its own sake.

Music is a language that

transcends national boundaries

and generations, and

experiencing music together

can be a powerful tool to bring

people together and share

values and knowledge. From

our family’s experience, we

knew that families enjoying

music together could have a

profound impact on the parentchild

relationship and also on a

child’s interest and curiosity in

music and rhythm. We wanted

to create an environment where

other families could experience

that joy and abandon of enjoying

a live music show and also

share that with their kids. When

a child can share a live music

experience with their parents,

something special happens. Not

only do they create a happy

memory together, but the child

understands intuitively that

music is something their parents

value and appreciate, and that

gives children encouragement to

appreciate and value it as well.

The bands we bring from North

America and Europe make

music that is meant for the

whole family. Lucky Diaz and

the Family Jam Band, one of the

top musical acts for families from

the US, has won a Latin Grammy

and an Emmy for their indie rock

that gets parents and kids up

and dancing to the beat. Hippe

Gasten, from the Netherlands

put on a rock show that amazes

all ages.

Our first festival tour went to five

cities, including Hangzhou, and

the response was astounding.

We saw kids and parents, even

grandparents dancing and

jumping up and down with

abandon. We knew we were

onto something big. Our next

tour to Hangzhou in January

2018 saw the bands perform

four back-to-back sold-out

shows at Xixi Children’s Theater.

Even in the middle of winter, the

families felt the excitement and

energy in the theatre.

Hand in Hand work with the

best bands for kids from more

than ten countries and will be

bringing more bands to share a

wide variety of modern music

with families at its International

Children’s Festival in China. Our

dream is to bring Hand in Hand

to 100 cities in China, because

kids all over China deserve the

chance to hear this amazing

music.

The Secret to Success

When you Google the

term “Taking pride in

our work” you will get

hits on numerous businesses,

schools, and other institutions

that claim this is a feeling their

people have. But what does it

really mean? The word “pride”

in the English language can

have a positive and negative

connotation. I found a really

good explanation by Eric Barker

in an article entitled “Barking up

the Wrong Tree”.

At Hangzhou International

School (HIS), we want to foster

within our students a real sense

of authentic pride because

we believe it will lead them to

greater success. Research backs

up this belief.

Barker refers to Jessica Tracy’s

book Take Pride: Why the

Deadliest Sin Holds the Secret

to Human Success, where she

states that “…researchers found

that those participants who

had been made to feel pride

voluntarily chose to work almost

twice as long on the new task as

participants who had been

informed of their performance

but not encouraged to feel

proud of it”.

I encourage you to read

his article in full, but in the

meantime, I will draw heavily

from it as I share some thoughts

here. Barker talks about two

kinds of pride: he states that

authentic pride is when you

are pleased with what you’ve

achieved through hard work;

whilst hubristic pride is when

you feel you’re fundamentally

better than everyone else.

In other words, people who feel

a sense of pride in what they

are doing want to persevere. So

how can we encourage a sense

of pride in our students? Barker

details the following suggestions

as to how authentic pride helps

you be the best you:

• Ask, “Who do I want to be?”

Not “What do I want?” Or

Helping Children Transition

into a New School

家校配合让适应期更顺畅

In international schools around

the world, an important

topic raises its head at the

beginning of each school year;

transitions. Given the nature

of international schools, with

a largely transient population,

each year will see new children

entering the school. Some of

them may be moving from

another school locally. For many

though, it is not only a new

school that they must get used

to, but an entirely new national

culture. This transition process

does not only occur at the start

of the year. Inevitably, at the end

of each year, a number of pupils

must also leave and embark on

a new transition of their own;

whether that is back to their

home country or to another new

country. Transitions are part of

life for international schools and

learning how to support children

through this process is crucial.

Transitioning for children is

not easy. Leaving a familiar

place, leaving existing friends

and losing the comfort of the

'known' can be hard. Transitions

bring a unique set of social

and emotional challenges

that schools and parents must

be aware of. As Blomberg

(N.D.) states, “Moving is an

emotional experience, and

how the transition is handled

has an enormous impact on a

child’s academic performance”.

Pogosyan (2016) concurs,

arguing that “The external

upheaval surrounding transitions

is often mirrored in us internally,

through a kaleidoscope of

emotions”. At Wellington, all

children are placed in a 'House'

from the day they start. The

House system pairs children

from different age groups,

helping to build a sense of

belonging and community that

spans traditional classroom

barriers. Children at Wellington

also take weekly wellbeing

lessons where teachers help

children navigate social and

emotional challenges, including

initial transition periods.

Teachers provide opportunities

for children to feel comfortable,

make friends, find their way

around the school, know how to

reach out for help and, above

all, enjoy the fantastic learning

opportunities they will be given.

Whilst acknowledging that

transitions can create challenges

for children, Pogosyan (2016)

cites psychologist Doug Ota

(2014) in arguing that “mobility

across cultures can be a catalyst

for tremendous growth”. Reeves

(2006, cited in Morales, 2015)

argues that “No matter how

challenging the situation is for

families, with the right support

and guidance, attending an

international school can be

a very positive experience”.

Building a positive atmosphere

through community engagement

between parents and schools

is perhaps the most important

way to maximise the benefits

of studying at an international

school. Most schools have

some form of parent-teacher

association. At Wellington,

our Friends of Wellington

association helps by developing

bonds in the community and

allows parents to get involved

in the operations of the school.

Parents are able to demonstrate

solidarity for the children, and

contribute to creating many

positive experiences, events,

activities and festivals that help

children feel more at home,

and part of a living, breathing

community.

Regardless of the challenges

that transitions pose, the

experts agree that the benefits

outweigh them. Pogoysan

(2016) eloquently explains;

“A safe passage through any

transition involves the marriage

of many steps, many moments

of perseverance…After all, the

reward for children is far bigger

than a new ship. It’s life maturity.

It’s resilience. It’s the confidence

of knowing that they can go

through challenges and come out

on the others side. The reward

is also a broadened mind. The

appreciation of what is true. And

the realisation that there is more

than one way of being right”.

It’s the FIT that matters!

Imagine buying an expensive

pair of shoes without ever

trying them on. Would

you simply look at a shoe on

someone’s foot and immediately

order it in the same colour and

size without ever checking to see

if it looked good on you or even

fit you? Of course you would

not, and yet, so many students

choose the colleges to which

they will apply in this way: their

college lists being made up of

the schools with high magazine

rankings and favourable

popularity scores. If we chose our

shoes in such a haphazard way,

we would surely end the day

limping, with squished toes and

blisters, no longer enamoured

by our looks, but instead wishing

that we had done a better job

evaluating the fit.

I often see students and

families who are overwhelmed

by the prospect of shopping

for a college, but shopping is

exactly what must be done. Of

course, there are thousands of

accredited four-year colleges to

choose from: 80 in Canada, 300

in the UK and more than 3,000

in the United States. In addition,

there are numerous wonderful

academic institutions around the

rest of the world. Such a wide

array of choice is mind-boggling.

How can one possibly know

which college is the right one?

No wonder the most well-known

colleges, specifically the Ivy

League colleges, have become

a proxy for a good decision. As

colleges like Cambridge and

Harvard are synonymous with

brainy kids, students assume

that all it takes to get in are

excellent grades and great SAT/

IGSCE and IB scores.

While college counsellors and

admissions staff know this is not

true, many students and their

families are surprised to find

that it takes more than brains

to get into the Ivy Leagues and

a growing majority of other

excellent colleges, particularly

those in the United States.

Colleges have very different

personalities. Their location, size,

the academic competitiveness of

their student bodies, the school’s

history and the attributes the

school considers to be the

most desirable in their students

all converge to create highly

unique education and living

environments. The question for

most colleges and universities is

not so much whether applicants

are academically qualified,

that is easy to see, but rather

whether or not they fit into the

unique environment so lovingly

constructed and painstakingly

maintained by the university.

Research shows that despite

the dramatic rise in applications

in recent years, admissions

personnel from a wide range

of colleges estimate that 80-

85% of the applications they

receive are from academically

well-qualified candidates[1].

In real terms, this means

that of Harvard’s 34,000+

applicants last year, 28,900 of

them would fit the academic

profile of admits (3.8 GPA and

combined SAT scores ranging

between 2070-2320). As only

2,032 students were admitted,

26,860+ students were

necessarily rejected[2]. This

example is given to highlight the

fact that grades and scores only

determine the range of colleges

and universities at which

the student is academically

competitive. Grades and scores

don’t determine who gets in

because the entire pool of

applicants is equally highly

qualified.

This is where the word fit comes

in and it is the reason students

get admitted to or rejected from

certain colleges.

Increasingly, colleges all over the

world want more than just smart

students. They want students

with a wide array of talents

and abilities. They certainly

accept candidates who play the

violin brilliantly, but they also

want people who are talented

accordion or tuba players. They

want students who participated

in student government, but they

also want theatrical students

and students who ran their

own businesses, saved puppies

or knitted sweaters. There is

no formula or preference for

what students should do; the

preference is only that they do

something for which they have

a passion for in a meaningful

way. In shoe shopping terms, all

students need to have shoes,

but colleges look for shoes in

every colour of the rainbow. It

is the diversity that makes each

class interesting, challenging

and able to force new thinking

amongst its members. After all,

if everyone were the same, the

dynamism and learning that

comes from different viewpoints

and experiences would be lost.

Fit comes in many different

forms, sometimes it is the

black boot, sometimes it is the

neon sparkly heel and other

times it is worn and scruffy

on the outside but amazingly

comfortable inside. This fit

cannot be determined by

casual observation, but rather

is ascertained slowly by the

individual student during the

and is completely unrelated

to who a student is as an

individual. A student starting

with the question “Which is

the best college?” is more likely

than not going be rejected as

he is asking for a black shoe at a

counter with tens of thousands

of shoes, black and otherwise.

It is hard to find the right one

without asking more questions.

Fit is largely about research. First

there is self-research. Students

need to know who they are,

what their interests are, what

their strengths and weaknesses

are and how they best learn.

Other critical questions are

specific to a particular college,

like where is it located? Is it in a

big city? Is it suburban or rural?

If it is rural, how long will it take

to get to the closest big city?

What is the general teaching

style? Are classes lecture-based

or discussion-based? How many

students are there in most

classes? In a US college the

number of students could be

between 700 or 20. Students

need to think about what they

want to do and how they want

to feel in a college. There is even

thinking to do before a student

decides which country he may

want to study in and of course

he may need to consider how

certain he is about a field of

study or major. After all, in some

systems such as those in the

UK and France, students apply

for a specific college within a

given university-switching is not

an option unless the student is

willing to withdraw and reapply

to another college. Then there is

work to be done even after the

student answers the questions

about who they are and what

they want. After these questions

are somewhat clearer, the

student needs to determine

which of the colleges they are

considering actually fit their

criteria. From here, the research

research phase of his or her

college search.

So what makes the difference?

FIT! To begin with, fit has two

sides. The student needs to

know that the college fits his/

her personal criteria for a

good college for them, and the

admissions office must feel that

the student is a good fit for the

college.

The process begins with

the student asking the right

questions. “Which colleges are

the best ones for me?” not

“Which are the best colleges?”

The second question is generic

process becomes one that helps

the student to narrow down his

or her choices from a general

list of dozens to a list of eight to

ten excellent choices.

In addition to research based

on reading college websites

and brochures, students

should do additional online

research to read comments by

current students. They would

also benefit from talking to

current and recent graduates

about life on campus, studentteacher

relations and other

topics of interest. Under optimal

circumstance, students will

visit the colleges they are

most seriously considering

while classes are in session

(October holiday and Chinese

New Year are optimal times

to visit campuses while they

are bustling with real college

life as it will give prospective

students a better idea of what

it might actually be like to live

on campus). There is simply

no substitute for walking on

campus, attending admission

sessions, sitting through a class

or two and hanging out for a day

to feel things out and to see if

he/she could picture themselves

on a particular campus for four

years. College visits can also be

critical opportunities to interview

with admissions personnel, ask

questions (not found on the

website) and transform oneself

from just another applicant into

a known individual.

Central to improving one's

chances in the admission pool

is convincing the admissions

team that the student is an

ideal candidate. This information

comes through in the student’s

application, personal statement

and answers to the all-important

supplement questions. The

more intimate the knowledge a

candidate has about the college,

the more convincing he/she will

be able to be in answering why

they want to attend. I cannot

overemphasise the importance

of this point, especially at the

more highly selective liberal arts

colleges.

Obviously determining fit takes

thinking about this process as

early as freshman or sophomore

year (US - Grades 9/10, UK -

Year 10/11) gives students the

non-pressured time needed to

consider the questions central

to who they are, what they want

to do and which colleges they

might be best suited for. It also

gives them the time they need

to get themselves in better

shape for admissions to a highly

selective college—if that is what

they choose to pursue. And as

any good shoe shopper knows,

the more time spent trying on

the shoe, the better the fit will

be!

鞋子。仅仅看了一眼别人穿

的鞋就马上订一双同色同款的 , 都没

有亲自试试这鞋子你是否穿上也同样

好看甚至是同样合适 , 你会这样做吗 ?

当然你不会 , 然而却有那么多学生就

是这样选择他们所要申请的大学院校

的。在他们的选校名单上 , 列满了在

知名杂志上享有高排名和高人气的院

校。如果我们选鞋子也这样随机 , 那

么最终收获的肯定是挤扁的脚趾、磨

出的水泡和一瘸一拐的步伐。这时我

们已不再关心自己看起来是否美丽了 ,

而是希望之前曾仔细评估过这双鞋是

否真正适合自己。

我经常看到学生及家长在面对院

校选择时感到茫然 , 然而选择还是必

须要做出的。当然 , 有几千所经认证

的 4 年制大学可供我们选择 , 其中加

拿大 80 所 , 英国 300 所 , 而美国则

超过 3000 所。此外 , 还有不计其数

的优秀院校遍布世界各地。这样巨大

的选择范围很容易让人一时不知所措。

你如何知道究竟哪一所才是最适合你

的呢 ? 在这样的情况下 , 难怪那些知

名院校 , 尤其是常春藤院校 , 就成为

了理想选择的代表 , 仿佛剑桥、哈佛

这样的院校就是聪明孩子的注定归宿 ,

而学生们通常也以为要想进入这样好

的院校 , 唯一要达到的条件就是出色的

成绩排名和 SAT/IGSCE/IB 考试高分。

然而 , 大学申请顾问和招生官们

生工作要考虑的不全在于申请者的成

绩是否合格 , 因为这非常容易看出来 ,

而是申请者是否真正适合本校精心设

计和费心保持的独特环境及气质。

研究结果表明 , 虽然近些年来

申请人数急剧增加 , 然而相当多院校

的招生人员表示 , 从他们收到的申

请材料看 , 全部申请者中约有 80%

至 85% 的人 , 其成绩达到了院校

的录取要求

人究竟能被哪所院校录取 , 因为整个

申请主体在这一方面都基本能够达标。

这就是为什么 “ 适合 ” 是如此重

要 , 而这也正是学生之所以被某所院

校录取或拒绝的关键原因。

目前的趋势是 , 全世界的院校都

越来越看重学生聪明头脑以外的素质。

他们希望学生拥有各方面的天资和能

力。他们当然乐于录取小提琴演奏技

艺精湛的申请人 , 但手风琴和大号演

奏者也会受到他们的欢迎。他们想要

的学生可以是在学生会中供职的 , 擅

长戏剧表演的 , 自己运营公司的 , 拯

救流浪狗的 , 甚至喜欢织毛衣的。就

学生应该做什么 , 没有一定之规 , 也

没有特殊偏好。唯一的重点在于 , 学

生应该以一种有意义的方式去从事一

件令他们充满激情的事。从买鞋的角

“ 适合 ” 体现在各个不同的方面 , 有

时候它是一双黑色的靴子 , 有时是闪

亮的漆皮高跟鞋 , 也有可能是一双外

表肮脏破旧然而内里无比舒适的旧鞋

子。这里所说的 “ 适合 ” 无法通过我

们对事物表象的观察而获得 , 而是一

定要由学生亲自在院校调研的过程中 ,

逐步进行探求。

那么 , 什么因素最为关键 ? 是 “ 适

合 ”!“ 适合 ” 首先包括两方面 : 学

生需要知道院校适合他 / 她对院校的个

人要求标准 , 同时 , 招生官也需要确认

该生确实适合本校的独特气质和文化。

这个评估过程的初步阶段是向学

生提出一系列正确的问题。“ 最适合

我的院校有哪些 ?”, 而不是 “ 哪些

院校是最好的 ?”。第二个问题太泛

泛了 , 而且完全和作为一个独立个体

的学生本人无关。如果一个学生最开

始考虑的问题就是 “ 哪些院校是最好

的 ”, 那么他 / 她多半有可能被拒绝。

这就好比他 / 她在一家款式成千上万、

颜色丰富多彩的鞋店里 , 问柜台 “ 我

要一双黑色的鞋子 ”, 那服务员根本

不知道他 / 她到底要哪一双。只有多

为主还是讨论为主 ? 绝大多数的课堂

中一般平均容纳多少学生 ? 在美国的

大学院校中 , 一节课所容纳的学生数

目从 700 到 20 不等。学生需要考虑

他们想在大学里做些什么以及感受到

些什么。学生甚至还要好好儿考虑究

竟去哪个国家留学 , 此外还要思考自

己究竟有多想学习某个领域或专业。

毕竟在一些体系里 , 如英国和法国 ,

学生需要申请一所大学里的特定学院。

再改变学院是不可能的 , 除非学生愿

意撤回申请然后重新申请另一所学院。

如此一来 , 即使在学生回答了诸如他

们是怎样的人和他们想做什么之后 ,

还是有很多工作要做的。在搞清楚所

有这些问题之后 , 学生接下来需要确

认哪类院校符合其个人选校标准。至

此 , 前期的调研结果将成为学生的一

How to Encourage

Reading in a

Technological World

café filled with people,

some in low conversation,

most glued to phones or

computers, various screens

dimly glow, reflected through

locked eyes. In this fairly

common modern-day scene,

I find something to always

be missing - the books. In a

technological age that values

innovation, instant gratification,

fast-paced consumption of

information, data and soundbytes,

cellphones over books

and STEM over social sciences,

it’s no surprise that reading,

literacy, and reading for pleasure

are declining in many countries.

Whilst everyone may have

their own opinion on whether

reading is vital, if all textbooks

should be shelved in favour of

online resources and interactive

whiteboards, or if you wouldn’t

mind our world one day

resembling Ray Bradbury’s,

Fahrenheit 451, reading is an

extremely important skill that

contributes to a successful future

and career. Furthermore, I believe

that with the many damaging

habits in the world, sitting down

after a long day, cracking open a

worn book, and delving into an

enchanting story is something

everybody in the world can

appreciate, most of all children.

Reading is a habit, a skill, and a

hobby. Developed in infancy, it’s

crucial to nurture interest from

a young age. Experts agree that

the younger the child is exposed

to books, the more likely reading

will become an ingrained aspect

of their life. In addition, not only

is reading a way to form lasting

bonds with your child, but it

is also a fun and healthy habit

demonstrated to have many

advantageous benefits. Reading

is proven to boost vocabulary,

concentration, comprehension,

language skills, empathy,

knowledge, and cognition,

which is probably why Richard

Steele famously said, “Reading

is to the mind what exercise is

to the body”. Moreover, research

conducted by the University of

Melbourne and the Victoria state

government concluded that

regardless of economic or social

background, reading to your

child six to seven times a week

has the same cognitive effect as

being almost 12 months older,

and in the future, these children

are shown to perform better on

school exams.

Books have their place, so

how do we encourage reading

in the modern, technological

world? There are many different

options, from using interactive

storybooks in infancy to

ensuring your home provides

a dedicated, comfortable

reading space throughout

adolescence. Finding the fine

balance between forcing your

child to read and cultivating a

love for it is critical as children

tend to avoid doing things

that feel like a chore. Reading

is not ‘one-size-fits-all’, and

understanding that your child’s

interest will vary depending

on personality, gender and

hobbies is the main component

involved in igniting their

personal desire to read. Talking

about your child’s interests and

understanding their passions

will help determine what

types of books they will enjoy,

whether that be fantasy series,

comic books, science books, or

children’s magazines to name

a few options. Visiting a local

library and owning a library

card is probably the best way to

explore these various avenues.

Ultimately, reading begins with

parents. Encouraging reading

is a long-term responsibility,

from the time they are babies,

to the time they are young

adults. Ludan, a local Hangzhou

nurse writes about her own

son, “Self-disciplined reading

is [a] precious habit, which will

benefit [your] whole lifetime,

but needs to be cultivated

gradually from [a] very young

age. It is even difficult for adults,

not to mention little kids. So

I usually supervise him, or do

the reading with him”. Children

model after parents so if they

see you reading, or spend time

reading with you, then it forms

into habit. Bethan Amena, a

librarian at Wellington College

Hangzhou, said, “I was inspired

to read by my family, who I saw

reading every day”.

In a technological world, it

cannot be denied that computer

literacy is an important skill.

However, the question here is

whether children are spending

more time developing these

abilities instead of literary ones.

You see this more frequently,

such as YouTube videos of

infants able to navigate a

cell phone, or toddlers glued

to video games and tablet

computers. One of the more

surprising things about teaching

English to young children is that

using technology is often more

intuitive to them than speaking,

listening, and reading. Of course,

this could be a sign technology

can be used as a catalyst

promoting deeper learning;

it also makes learning fun,

which is probably why we use

technology so much as English

teachers. However, it could also

be an indication that at some

deeper level, reading, and a

genuine love of books, is being

forgotten.

Nowadays, technology is a

universal language and one

of the first skills developed in

childhood. It’s impossible to fully

understand the implications of

our technological-dependent

world and a few complications

are a noted decline in critical

thinking (in lieu of ‘just Google

it’), writing and vocabulary

skills (in lieu of autocorrect),

and an increase in addiction

to technology-related activities

such as video games, social

media, and texting. Ludan

states that "It's too easy for

kids to become addicted to

those electric gadgets, which

leads to deprived attention,

[and a] shortened attention

span” alongside poor sleep

habits, laziness, or even a loss

of social skills. Ludan, and

experts, suggest limiting the

time children are allowed to

use technology, implementing

a ‘no-screen time’ policy, as

well as restricting the amount

of technology available in the

house. A direct combatant to

the negative side effects of

using too much technology

is quite simply the ability to

balance technology with the

love for reading and learning.

Technology is the future but

by no means does reading

need to be a part of the past.

Encouraging your children (and

yourself!) to read is important

to cognitive development

and maintenance, and it

is a discipline that inspires

creativity, critical thinking, and

learning; a skill ultimately meant

to be passed down through

generations. As Carl Sagan

stated, “One of the greatest

gifts adults can give – to their

offspring and to their society –

is to read to children”.

implementing into our homes is

greater, it has never been more

important to teach our children

good reading habits—which

they can use in their academic

life as well as their everyday

life. A new study published

last month by The Ohio

State University explores the

relationship between reading

and vocabulary in prepubescent

children. The study found that

children whose parents read

them five age-appropriate

books a day (containing

between 140 and 228 words,

on average) start Kindergarten

having heard a vocabulary

potentially 1.4 million words

richer than a child who had not

been read to. The study also

highlights a heightened sense of

empathy, increases in creativity,

and improvements in mental

flexibility. So, with this being the

case, we’ve put together a list

start. One of his most famous, James and

the Giant Peach, follows a boy who finds, as

National Geographic Kids, a monthly

magazine subscription, first published

in 1975, whose range is second to none,

focuses on superb vocabulary development

whilst also offering an interesting insight to

science and topics from all corners of the world.

With this being a subscription service, it acts

more of an informative magazine, rather than an

education supplement. The magazine is a perfect

complement to classroom study, as it gives new

ways to keep children entertained whilst also

being informative and is aimed at kids from ages

eight to thirteen years old. National Geographic

recently launched a spin-off, National Geographic

Little Kids, so now children aged two to four

years are also able to enjoy the best of the series.

In the Paddington Bear Collection we

follow another curious character, a bear

by the name of Paddington. His stories

normally involve him, his friends, Mr. Gruber and

Paddington’s marmalade sandwiches. Originally

written by Michael Bond, the book series has

blown up, recently becoming a huge hit as a

series of movies. The more recent books contain

great illustrations and follow Paddington making

his way around the UK. The series is great

for young readers who have a love for British

culture.

whether you’re an adult or a first-time

reader, his collections are very much focused

on progression. His earlier books, such as One

phonological awareness, whereas the more

advanced Green Eggs and Ham offer a richer

vocabulary and a larger focus on important

language skills which lay foundations for learning

to read. The Dr. Seuss stories collection consists

of three sections, focusing on the different age

groups. First, babies. These stories are to be

read to very young infants, to get them used

to hearing the sounds and vocabulary of future

Seuss books. Next, toddlers and pre-schoolers,

from around the ages of two. Mildly humorous,

these books contain many rhymes and beautifully

drawn illustrations. Their main purpose is to

allow early learners to develop a love for reading

and not to focus on making mistakes when doing

so. Finally, young readers. This collection is great for

advancing children's phonological awareness, and

for them to gain confidence when moving on to

more difficult books.
