Drama Workshop
Drama can be used in many ways to
create fun and inspiring activities in
the English classroom. Even from an
early age, children can play and improvise
in English, and drama activities
will contribute to real language
practice, fluency, building self confidence
and social skills, important for
language development. This workshop
will explore some useful drama
methods and ideas.
Get Your Students Talking (2 x 45 min)
This workshop will let you try a good
number of communicative activities.
Activities that will make your students
talk in ways which are challenging,
engaging and – above all – fun.
now lives in the UK. For the past 16
years she has also been an author. At
present, she is International Teacher
A child’s window to the world: engaging
young learners in reading in English for
pleasure
Good reading materials not only
provide entertainment but also a
broader view of the world for young
learners. This talk will look at how
young learners become motivated
to read in English, and for that we
need to think about how young learners
think. Then we need to look at
the kind of reading material and activities
that will firstly engage these
learners, and more importantly, sustain
their motivation to read. Our ultimate
goal is to encourage reading
so that our learners develop a love
of reading in English which will stay
with them for life.
children learning languages and on
the impact of globalisation and politics
on primary foreign language policy.
Communicative language teaching (CLT):
What does this mean for seven year olds?
As a teacher educator, over many
years students have talked with me
of implementing CLT in the early
primary languages classroom. However,
my classroom observations
have suggested that this description
does not quite fit with what is actually
happening. In this presentation I
hope to discuss an initial categorisation
of the early steps that teachers
and learners actually take, in preparation
for those later phases, which
might well be more appropriately
categorised as CLT. I will draw on
classroom evidence from Sweden
to critically examine the process and
engage delegates in a discussion
of how this early phase of language
learning might be re-named and reframed.
Using Visual Material as Stimulus in
Language Teaching
This workshop will be held primarily
in English and we will work mainly
in small groups so everyone can be
an active participant! We will experience
a variety of short activities
using various kinds of visual material
to stimulate, encourage and support
language use and development. The
main focus is on speaking and communicating
in English, but there are
links to written language activities
which can be exploited later in our
own classes. During the workshop
some time will be given for reflection
about how the activities would work
in our own teaching contexts.
