Abstract
While a train is in operation wheel damage such as wheel flats may appear and because
of the damage the rail will be subjected to impact loads. There are various ways to detect
and record wheel damage.
The purpose of this report is to perform experimented simulation of load from wheel flat.
The load is an impact on the rail. The load is simulated with the help of an ordinary
hammer by which the load is applied to the rail. Strain gauges which are glued on the rail,
are used to measure strains in the rail due to the impact load. At the impact on the rail
waves arise, and these waves are examined and determined.
The following results are determined after simulation:
• The time for which the impact load is in contact with the rail is somewhere
between 250 and 300 µs.
• Stresses that arise at simulation is normal stresses and shear stress. The normal
stress was determined under the load and shear stress 0,5 m from the point of
load application. Stresses vary depending on the strength of the load, the place
of the load and the distance from the load. Normal stress was found to vary
between 15,7 and 39,2 MPa and shear stress varies between 0,226 and 1,098
MPa.
