Her
Sektörün en önemli fuarlarının başında gelen Domotex Hannover’i herkes dört gözle bekliyor. Heimtextile
Wrapping up 2019 and turning to 2020
And this is the last issue of the year. 2019 was a troubled, intense and fertile period for some… It was also
intense and busy for us this year as always. Let us make a short evaluation of the year on behalf of Decor
Magazine. We started with three fairs in Germany. The journey that started with Heimtextile, Domotex
and IMM Köln extended from Domotex Asia to America. We have come a long way, we ran from fair to
fair; we worked, got tired and we tried to do useful actions for the sector. This year, of course, we will not
stop and we will continue to cover miles with our full strength.
There will be a Domotex full of expectations
Everyone is looking forward to Domotex Hannover, one of the most important fairs in the sector. We
will be at Domotex fair which will be held on January 10-13 with the dust of our feet and hold the pulse
of decoration and sector in Heimtextil Frankfurt. Domotex Hannover, with the theme of “Treffpunkt
Handwerk” (Meeting Point of Handcrafts) this year, will welcome visitors in a livelier area based on
intergenerational communication.
IMM Köln, one of the first and most important fairs of the year for the decoration world, will turn into a
show where trends will take the lead in the forefront. We are looking forward to the fair which will be the
scene of special moments with the concept of “Interiors of Tomorrow” like the whole decoration family.

Halı sektörü ve marka anlayışı
Selim Şentürk
Değerli Decor Dergisi okurları;
Halı sektörü Türkiye’nin dünya çapında
söz sahibi olduğu sektörlerin
başında geliyor. Dolayısıyla burada
markalaşmak, üretici pozisyonundan
global marka pozisyonuna
geçmek ülkemiz için olmazsa
olmazlardan biri. Bu yazımda Türkiye’de
ve dünyada marka anlayışı
ve markalaşabilmek üzerine bazı
konulara temas edeceğim.
Hedef Pazar ve Pazarda Hedef Kitle Seçimi
Hedeflediğiniz pazarın dinamiklerini ve bu pazarda
hitap edeceğiniz hedef kitlenin kim olduğunu belirlemeniz
ve bu kitlenin alışkanlıklarını, ihtiyaçlarını,
dilini ve ulaşmak için kullanacağınız mecraları planlayarak
çalışmaya başlamanız gerekir. Her seçim
erkek hedef kitleyi yani bayi yapılanması yani
erkek hedef kitleyi hedeflerken bazı markalar direkt
karar vericiyi yani kadını hedeflemektedir. Elbette
“Think Global Act Local”.
hareket ederek hedef pazar bazlı pazarlama dili
işlemek önemli. Ve tabi gerek ürün gerekse pazarlama
anlamında trendleri takip etmek, yakalamak.
Bunun için dönemsel trend raporları hazırlanmalı ve
uygulanmalıdır.
Marka Hikayesi
Artık tüketiciler, sıradan isimlendirilmiş, kurgulanmış
markalar istemiyor, hikayesi olan markalar
istiyor.
ürünün tüketiciye verdiği his, duygu, deneyim.
Günümüzde ürün değil bu duyguları satma dönemi
başladı. Markanızın hikayesi ne?
Artık tüketiciler markalardan samimiyet arıyor,
dürüstlük istiyor. 2020 yılı markamıza bir hikaye kazandırma
dönemi olacak, şimdiden yatırım yapmaya
başlamak bize çok şey kazandırır.
Marka stratejisi
Yani markanın yol haritası. Yukarıdaki tüm adımları
attıktan sonra sorularımız şunlar; Hedeflediğimiz
kitlenin alışkanlıkları neler? Ne seviyor? Ne izliyor?
Ne dinliyor? Nerelere gidip ne alıyor? Ne okuyor
veya ne okumuyor? Markadan beklentisi ne? Halıdan
beklentisi ne? Bunu kısaca insan odaklı düşünme
diye tanımlayabiliriz. Tüm bu çalışmaları, analizleri
markanız için yaparak nerelerde olacağımızı,
nerelerde olmamız gerektiğini belirleyebilir, pazarlamanın
4 temel karması olan ürün, fiyat, dağıtım ve
tutundurma faaliyetlerini yönetmeye başlayabiliriz.
Pazarlamada Kategori Yaratma
Marka çağında bir konuda ilk olmanın zorlaştığı
dönemdeyiz. Yani büyük ihtimalle halı veya kilimi
sıfırdan icat edemeyiz. Ama pekala sektör içerisinde
kendimize alan açabiliriz. Bu konu ne kadar
risk aldığınızla ilgili. Bu kimi zaman markanıza bir
alt-üst marka oluşturmakla ilgili iken bazen yeni bir
marka yaratmak, yada belki bir ürün kategorisinde
ağırlığını arttırmak olarak karşımıza çıkar. Bazen
de düşünme şeklimizi değiştirebiliriz. Örneğin belki
de varlığı boyunca mobilya sektörünün gölgesinde
kalmış ve buna uyumlu olması beklenen halının
artık kahramanlaşmasının vakti gelmiştir. Artık evin
uyumlu objesi, tasarım felsefesinin gelişmesiyle
hikayesi olan bir tasarım kahramanına dönüşmeye
başlamıştır. Markanızın bütünleşik kimliği sizi yine
bu konularda düşünmeye sevk edecektir.
Tüm bu kavramları firmalarında kılavuz alan markalar,
gerek iç piyasada gerekse globalde var olduğunu
ispat eden bir marka olarak hayatına devam
eder.
olsun.

Dünyanın bilinen
ilk halısı;
birinde bulunan bu halını yanında at
VI. yüzyıllardan I. yüzyıla kadar, bütün Orta Asya’yı
kapsayan ve Hun topluluklarının yayıldığı alanlarda
12

görülen “hayvan üslubu”, milattan sonraki toplulukların
batıya hareketleriyle Doğu Avrupa ve Karadeniz’in
konuda, başka tarihler teklif etmeye devam edecektik.

gelmez. Çabuk eskiyen, yıpranan bir malzeme olması
dolayısıyla halıların, çok eski tarihlerden günümüze
ulaşmış olmaları ancak saklama koşullarının sağlıklı
olmasıyla alakalı bir durumdur.
Diğer Türk Halıları ve Pazırık Halısı
Orta Asya hiç şüphesiz eski bir dokuma merkezidir.
Bu bölge ile Doğu Türkistan’a uzanan bölgelerde
Ortaçağ’da zengin bir dokuma geleneğinin olduğu
araştırmalar sonucu ortaya konmuştur. Türklere ait
1700 yıllık Lou-lan ve Lop-Nor’da (Budha Tapınağı)
dokunmuş halılar ile çeşitli kumaşlar Aurel Stein’in
1906-1908’de yaptığı kazılarda gün ışığına çıkmıştır.
Bugün bu halılar Hindistan-Yeni Delhi ve Londra-British
Museum’da sergilenmektedir.
1913 yılında Turfan Bölgesi’nde A.Von Le Coq tarafından

The world’s first
known carpet;
Pazyryk Rug
A journey for 2500 years…
Turkish carpet art’s adventure
for 2500 years.
Historical development of carpet making
We learn that on what dates, where, by whom, how
the carpet making was made until today from carpet
residues obtained by archaeologists from their
excavations and the studies of scientists who made
researches on this field. Researchers have revealed
from carpet fragments obtained from the excavations
that at what time frame and by whom the carpet was
woven and what kind of quality it had. According to the
results obtained from these researches, carpet making
has come until today from the ancient times by
developing in dyeing, design, knotting techniques and
sizes. Some of these changes have come to existence
in parallel with the developments in technology.
In the world’s textile history, it is the only hand-made
rug which has remained its importance with its basic
structure unchanged for about 3,000 years until today.
The carpet, that people had created to meet their
needs for rug and covering in the early days, later has
decorated the palaces, temples and chateaus as a
valuable work of art and has become a subject to the
paintings of painters. Hand-made carpet making has
a very long history. According to archaeological researches,
people who had lived in historical periods;
had created the first textiles by darning tree peels and
fibers. They had created the other textiles in the course
of history according to people’s living conditions.
Pazyryk Rug
Carpet making is one of the oldest hand woven arts
of mankind. The roots of the carpet has traced to the
centuries before christ. There is a strong consensus
among the carpet scientists that the oldest carpet
was woven in the 5th century before christ and it was
the oldest carpet sample. A rug, which is 1.83x2 meters
in size having 36 knots in 1 square centimeter and
a dark and light brown background and yellow pattern
along with a very fine workmanship, and which
was woven with the Gördes knot technique, has been
found. This knot density shows that it was made with
a grand craftsmanship in its own period. That a horse
skeleton was found near this rug, which was found
inside one of the kurgans (burial place) in Pazyryk
region in the Southern Siberia has made think that
it had been used as a saddle blanket. While it was
stated in literatures that the world’s oldest carpets
have remained from 14th-15th centuries, The world
carpet art history has been suddenly slipped from
today to 2500 years ago to one day with the discovery
of new carpets, which were made in Hun kurgans,
found out during the excavations made in high lands
of the Central Asia. The “animal style”, which had involved
the whole Central Asia from 6th centuries B.C.
till the 1st century and seen in the areas where Hun
communities had spreaded, had been described as
the “Eurasian animal style” to briefly means to involve
two continents, since it had become widespread also
in the areas in north of Eastern Europe and the Black
Sea, from the centuries along with the movements of
communities A.C. (After Christ).
Upon a strong stylization of animal figures had emerged
in this period in Central Asia; gold, silver, bronze,
16
DECOR • November - December 2019
or other objects made of small figurines and various
objects, animal sculptures or reliefs have been made.
Similar examples had been obtained by processing
or shaping over the wood. Also it is possible to see on
the textures the extensions of the figurative compositions
at the state of calm or struggling, applied on the
felt. Sometimes we see that the animal figures, which
had been cut from leather and affixed as appliques,
have spread to a very wide area, by going to a strong
stylization.
A new page in the history of archeology and art
A carpet, which was stylized in this way and enriched
with patterns, into which legendary animals added,
dated 5th-1st century B.C., was found in near dates
and it was accepted as “the world’s oldest carpet”.
This rug, which Russian archaeologists C. İ Rudenko
found in Pazyryk highland in the south of the Altay
Mountains in east of Kazakhstan, has been evaluated
as a common product of Central Asian cultures in
terms of technique, motif, pattern, color and composition.
It had influence also in the obtaining of new ideas
in terms of archeology and art history.
The grave robbery, which began in the centuries
before christ in various regions of Central Asia, chose
also this kurgan that was excavated by Rudenko, as
a target and this kurgan was also been robbed in an
unknown date. Waters leaking into the grave after the
robbery had frozen here, and had ensured the carpet,
the items and objects, which remained from the
robbery, have reached the present day in a stiffened
state. If freezing has not occurred, perhaps the
objects in this kurgan would have also decayed over
time and we would have been lack of evidence of the
carpet history. Maybe we would continue to suggest
other dates in this respect. The important thing, that
draws our attention here, is that this rug suggests a
very advanced period in terms of technique, pattern,
color and composition. So this rug is not a simple
carpet and it shows the highest level reached by an
art understood that its infrastructure is based on the
period at least 5-6 centuries ago. Another Russian
archaeologist, who has stated a similar evaluations
that carpet making has been known in the region of
Khoplin for two thousand years and that their original
homeland was Western Turkistan.
Turkish knot “Gördes”
This rug, which is at St. Petersburg Hermitage
Museum today, is technically woven by the Turkish
(Gördes) knot. The carpet, which was woven from very
fine and double-twisted wool, shows that it was woven
very intensely and in good quality for a special person.
In addition, while the reflections related to Turkish
culture come to the forefront in the designs on the
carpet, the effects of Western Iranian and Mesopotamian
cultures are also seen from place to place.
Kurgans, which are located on the Silk Road, which
had undoubtedly provided a very important transportation
between the East and the West during the First
and Middle Ages, were made by the Central Asian peoples
who were affected by the passengers, who had
come and gone on this route. The patterns and shapes
prominent on the carpet are seen in the middle area
along with five borders surrounding the carpet. On the
outermost and innermost narrow border, the mythological
griffon figures, which are widely reflected in
the art works of Eastern societies, are sorted. Snowflake
patterns takes place on the second border placed
from outside towards inside on the second border,
and the cavalry compositions in state of moving
ahead were included on the third border. While these
cavalries bring to mind; the patterns of Mesopotamian
and Sassanic cultures from place to place with their
skinny-leg shalwars on their bodies and their headwears,
which are open from front and closed from
rear, over their horses in highly ornamented trappings
with knotted tails, ornamented manes and aigrettes
put on their heads, they also present images related
to living ways of Central Asian Turkish communities
from place to place. On the fourth border inside, the
deer sequences passing through a marshy land in the
same direction are included. In addition to that deers
are animals common to Siberia, the figures over
their forearms and rear hips such as points, commas
reflect the common features of Eurasian animal style.
There are equal squares in size of 6x4=24, filled with
snowflakes or animal skin patterns in the middle of
the rug. However, differences are seen between the
ground color and the pattern color among similar
patterns. In the general sense, the dominant colors of
the Pazyryk Rug consist of white, blue and yellow on a
red background. There is a long gap between the other
carpet pieces that came to hand after the Pazyryk Rug
which refers a very good quality and advanced period.
However, this gap does not mean that carpet was not
November - December 2019 • DECOR 17
made in this period. Since they are a material that is
worn out and wasted away quickly, that the carpets
have reached to today from ancient times is a state
related to the healthy storage conditions.
Other Turkish Carpets and Pazyryk Rug
In 1913, a carpet was found by A.Von Le Coq in the
room of a temple located near Kuça / Koço city in the
Turfan region, as well. These carpets, which belong
to the Göktürk period, belongs to 5-6 centuries B.C.
Today, these carpets are Berlin is exhibited at the
Islamic Museum. This carpet was also woven with
wool material by knotting. The
dragon figure is seen as well as
the geometric patterns.
The Pazyryk region is not far
from here. Also today, the carpets
woven in Kaş-gar, Hotan,
and Kucar’s districts Kuca and
Turfan, indicate that this oldest
carpet region still continues its
tradition. It is obvious that the
region, in which the Pazyryk rug
was found, reflects the character
and culture of Altaic people.
Undoubtedly, the Central Asia
is an old center of textiles. As
a result of researches made, it
was found that there had been
a rich tradition of textiles in this
region and in the regions extending
to the Eastern Turkistan in
the Middle Age. In 1700-year-old
Lou-lan and Lop-Nor (Buddha
Temple) which had belonged to
Turks, woven carpets and various
fabrics came to light during the
excavations made by Aurel Stein
between 1906 and 1908. Today these carpets are exhibited
in India-New Delhi and London-British Museum.
In terms of history and culture, it is seen that these
kurgans are created by the Turks and these kurgans
host many Turkish patterns, including the Pazyryk
Carpet which is known as the world’s first carpet.
Erdmann, one of art history experts, accepted that ‘’
The Pazyryk Rug was woven with Turkish Knot and
that it is a Turkish carpet ‘’ as a result of his researches.
The Pazyryk Rug, which is being exhibited in
the Hermitage Museum, has also a sample woven in
Gördes by being very loyal to the patterns, colors and
weaving characteristics of the Pazyryk Rug.
Consequently, the pattern order of the Seljuk and
Ottoman carpets and the Anatolian carpets, which
are woven today, is similar to the background scheme
of the Central Asian Turkish carpets. The tradition of
dividing the background of the Pazyryk Rug into 24
equal squares is a scheme that appear even in the
felts woven in Central Asia. The dividing of the backgrounds
of Anatolian carpets into squares and their
placement in geometric compositions is similar to the
background scheme of the Great Seljuk carpets. The
carpet background’s being divided into two or more
squares and processing animal or plant patterns in
each square is based on the geometric scheme, which
is also seen in Pazyryk Rug. Carpets which is woven
in Anatolia today and plain weave
rugs continue the tradition of
Central Asian Turkish carpets and
plain weave rugs. This tradition
has been moved to Anatolia
through the Great Seljuks and the
Anatolian Seljuks. Thanks to the
Beyliks and the Ottomans, it has
reached to today.
Hand Woven Carpet Making
Today
The Hereke Carpet, the most
important product of Turkish
Carpet today and which the
whole world knows well. This
carpet, which comes to exist with
works that may last months or
even years in carpet rooms and
looms, is woven in two types
including wool over cotton yarn
and silk on wool and silk yarn.
There are 3600 tie knots per dm²
in the woolen carpets. Its quality
is called 60x60. On the other
hand, there are 10,000 loops in
dm² in silk carpets. Its quality is called 100x100. The
patterns are very detailed since the Hereke carpets
are woven intensely. In the past years, Hereke
Carpets were used to be woven by the ladies or girls
of many houses in Hereke by using the Gördes knot
and used to be sold to traders and wholesalers.
Weaving carpets in houses were common until the
80’s. However, the looms has disappeared over time
due to the reasons such as industrialization of the
sector, intensive labor used, and expensive price of
silk. Hereke Carpet continues its existence because
of special orders given and its devotees. The consensus
of the authorities is; that the growing new
generation does not protect this culture and the lack
of qualified personnel deficit in weaving.

Öncelikle Gülbahar Gümüşten’i
tanıyalım
Mimar Sinan Güzel Sanatlar
Üniversitesi, Geleneksel Türk
Sanatları, Halı Kilim ve Eski Tük
Kumaşları Anasanat Dalı son
sınıf öğrencisi olup, İlkokuldan
Üniversite hayatına kadar birçok
yarışmada, hem ulusal hem de
uluslararası ödüller aldım. Kendimi

İHİB’in HARE programına katılmıştım. Orada ustanın
ip boyamasını izlerken, kazandaki iplerin hareketlerinden
çok etkilendim. İplik kazanında bazen
birbirini takip eden, bazen de suyun altında gezinip
bize varlığını hissettiren onlarca ip… Kimi yüzeyde
köpüğüyle dans ediyordu, kimi dipte… Kimi aprajlı
kimi tek düze… Aslında “Surface” in tasarım sürece
o an başladı. Surface; Dipte kaybolup suyun başka
bir ucunda yükselen, birbirlerinin üstüne çıkıp
kendilerini hissettirmek isteyen, iplerin hareketlerinden
ilham alınıp dokuduğum bir halı.
“Infınıty” ise Almanya Domotex fuarına gittiğim
dönemde ortaya çıkmaya başladı. Hannover belediye
binasını gezerken gördüğüm krokilerden
etkilenmemle ortaya çıkan bir eser… Kendimizi git
olabiliyor. Mesela yurt dışında Carol Sebert’ı
beğeniyorum. Sanat günleri adı altında workshoplar
yaparak farklı malzemelerden desen tasarlıyorlar.
Bu çalışmalar ve sanatçılar çok ilgimi çekiyor.
10 yıl sonra kendini nerede görmek istiyorsun?
Kendimi, tasarım stüdyosunu kurmuş bir tasarımcı
olarak hayal ediyorum; bir stüdyoda sürekli kalıp
programların sınırlarını zorlayan bir çizimci olarak
değil. Gezip, görüp, araştırıp bunu yaşamının bir
parçası haline getiren bir birey olmak istiyorum. Şu
an farklı alanlardan ve mekanlardan beslenmeye

Guest Designer
Gülbahar Gümüşten:
“Design is a set of steps before you come
to a conclusion for an idea”
Our guest this month is a student

make different and special efforts in watercolor, oil
painting, sand sculptures.
We, Decor Magazine, asked her about the days he
started to design and her plans for the future.
Gülbahar Gümüşten won the
first place in the carpet design
competitions organized by IHIB in
2018 and GAHIB in 2019.

Guest Designer
Where did the design come into your life from?
Design is to think and plan for me; It is a set of steps
before an idea is reached. In short, it is to think.
Maybe eating, sleeping, and travelling. In this sense,
design has entered my life since I started to draw my
ideas, that is, in elementary school. But it took me a
while to get close to production. I started to get the
pleasure of touching my carpet designs during my
university years. I continue to experience the process
of weaving and touching.
What does Carpet mean to you? What is the difference
of carpet from other design products?
The carpet alone is a different thing for me. I feel
much better when I design a hand rug. I know there
will be one of it and it will smell wool when you
touch it. You will feel that naturalness by looking,
seeing and smelling. For me, these two types of design
and art are separated. I have different feelings
for the machine made carpet. Finally, a design that
I touched, referred me to very different ideas than
handmade carpets that I cannot express in words. At
the same time, the machine made carpet is functional
as well as decorative. In this sense, the carpet
has a very different place for me both in itself and in
other design products.
Is there an artist or designer you’ve taken as an
example?
There are things that I believe are good in the field
and I can take a sample of anyone who does not contradict
himself. These people may be my teachers and
sometimes artists. For example, I like Carol Sebert
abroad. They design workshops from different materials
by conducting workshops under the name of art
days. I am very interested in these works and artists.
Where do you want to see yourself in 10 years?
I dream of myself as a designer who founded a design
studio; not as an illustrator who constantly molds in
a studio and pushes the limits of programs. I want to
be an individual who travels, sees, researches and
makes it a part of her life. I’m trying to feed from
different areas and places right now. I attend different
workshops. I also follow exhibitions in different fields.
I make tiles, watercolors, oil paintings, sand sculptures.
I want to do this with a team after 10 years. I’m
talking about a team that doesn’t lack the brush paper
pen oil paint. Why shouldn’t creative artists come out
of us today? Or why wouldn’t a Turkish design office
also set up its own workshop to meet the demands?
And as a designer, why not show up with those carpets
abroad? It will take time, but I believe it will.
You won the first place in carpet design competitions
organized by IHİB in 2018 and GAHİB in 2019.
Do you want to talk about the carpets and stories
that you designed in these competitions?
I attended the IHİB’s HARE program. I was very impressed
by the movements of the ropes in the cauldron
while watching the master’s rope painting there.
Dozens of ropes that sometimes follow each other
in the spinning boiler and sometimes wander under
the water and make us feel its existence… Some
were dancing with foam on the surface, some on
the bottom… Some of the finishes were uniform and
some abrage… It was that time to design “Surface”.
Surface; It is the carpet I wove by inspiring from the
movements of the ropes that lost on the bottom and
soared at another end of the water, which wanted to
climb on top of each other and make themselves feel.
“Infinity” started to emerge when I went to Domotex
fair in Germany. It is a work that emerges from
my sketches while I’m visiting Hanover city hall. It
means the endless emptiness of the crowd that we
find ourselves in. At any glance, I would describe it
as another unusual city, made with the excitement of
discovering an unfinished continent.

Festival Halı Turquality
kapsamına alındı
Festival Halı Genel Müdürü
Cebrail Şahin:
“Türk halısının dünyadaki
temsilcisi olmak istiyoruz”
24
DECOR • November - December 2019
Endonezya başta olmak üzere 10’a yakın ülkede depomuz
projeler. Zaten hali hazırda Festival’in bir Akademi
ekibi var. Üniversiteden yeni mezun olan arkadaşları
kendi yönetimimizin ilgili birimlerine hazırlamak için
November - December 2019 • DECOR 25
Festival Akademi’de eğitiyoruz. 2018 yılının 10. ayında
başlayan akademi, nisan 2019’da sona erdi. Daha
sonra kendi alanlarında başarılı olan arkadaşlar 6 ay
sonra işlerinin başına geçti. Şuanda bu akademiden
mezun olan 17 arkadaşımız yurtdışında kendi mesleklerini
yapıyorlar.
Festival markası olarak Turquality kapsamına
alındınız? Bu yenilik markanıza ne gibi kazanımlar
getirecek?
demektir. Türkiye’de halı firmalarının çok olması, çok
büyük üretim yatırımları yapmanızı gerektirmiyor. Siz
satış ağını düzgün işletirseniz zaten ürün alacağınız
çok partneriniz var. Şuanda 18 firmadan ürün alıyoruz.
Sınırlı kaynaklarla sınırsız istekleri yerine getirmek
istiyoruz. Her ürünü kendimizin üretmesi pek
sağlıklı değil. Yere bir şey serilecekse biz bunu yaparız.
İstenilen üründe hangi ülke uzmansa ona göre
partnerlerimizle çalışırız. Bugün Çin’in, Hindistan’ın

Festival Carpet is covered by
Turquality Program
Festival Carpet General Manager
Cebrail Şahin: “We want to be the
representative of Turkish
carpet in the world”
Festival Carpet company, being among the largest
carpet brands in Turkey, has been taken into Turquality
Program in 2019. The third brand in the Turquality
program in the carpet sector, Festival Carpet General
Manager Cebrail Sahin gave information about the
issues that this program will bring to brands and
their overseas activities. In addition to help them to
grow, Cebrail Sahin underlined that this program will
contribute to the establishment of a corporate culture
in the company.
Can we listen from you about the story of Festival
Halı since its inception?
We started manufacturing first in 1983. Until 2008,
the company continued to grow. In the following years,
it was necessary to increase the number of companies
and brands to be profitable. That’s why we started
using the Festival brand in 2008. With the acqu-

isition of several different companies, we have now
become a group company. We currently have around
800 dealers in the domestic market as Festival brand.
It’s not easy to manage so many dealers from a single
point. Because, we have to direct contact with our
customers in the field with our own staff. We manage
our main stocks from the center here. This is a great
strategy in itself. There are no other brands currently
using this system.
Do you also use this strategy in exports?
After we put this system into operation, we said why
not do the same it abroad. We opened warehouses
in Germany and Saudi Arabia and started to implement
this system in our exports. We currently have
warehouses in nearly 10 countries, including Germany,
Arabia, China, Bosnia, Albania, Kuwait, Qatar
and Indonesia. We have an important mission; To be
the representative of Turkish carpet in the world. We
currently have investment projects abroad. These will
become clear later.
As the Festival brand, we aim to fully strengthen the
sales network in the next 5 years and have sales in 50
countries. We are currently active in 20 countries. But
we are working to achieve this goal in the coming periods.
We have 4 sales networks. First, we make sales
November - December 2019 • DECOR 29
to related large warehouse and customers directly.
The second is to build our own warehouses and sell
from here. We currently have a total of 13 warehouses
and make sales from these warehouses. Third,
opening stores and directly reach the retail customer.
We are currently partnered with 23 stores. We will
increase this number in the future. We have a classic
sales network, as well. We haven’t already taken
our hands out of this line. Finally, we are considering
E-Commerce. The latest arrangements are being
made. We did a similar thing abroad. We deal with one
of the best companies in the world.
Can you give us information about your Festival Academy?
What does this program offer to students?
We have training projects in cooperation with Istanbul,
Konya and Gaziantep Universities. These projects
consist of trainings given by lecturers and instructors
who are proficient in sales, strategy and marketing.
The Festival company already has an Academy team.
We train new graduates at the Festival Academy to
prepare them for the relevant units of our management.
The academy started in October 2018 and
ended in April 2019. Afterwards, friends who were
successful in their own fields started to work 6 months
later. Currently, 17 of our friends who have graduated
from this academy are doing their jobs abroad.
Are you included in Turquality Program as a festival
brand? What benefits will this innovative program of
Turkish government bring to your brand?
It is very useful for the government to start such an
incentive campaign in this field. When we examine the
incentives applied in other countries, we can say with
peace of mind that this privilege that was offered us
ranks at the first place. If we consider all the sectors
in Gaziantep, we are the 10th in this sense and the
third in the carpet sector.
If we were a company without a big goal, we would
have thought Turquality would not be useful to us. But
we already have hot sales to over 40 countries, 13 warehouses
in 10 countries, and stores and sales staff
in most countries. With the power of our own brand,
we have no doubt that we will take bigger steps with
the support of the state in this way. In fact, the state
supports you in this sense. Turquality’s goals and
our goals coincide with each other, giving us a great
path for further growth. On 15 August 2019, we received
this document and it has become official then
we are preparing our projects accordingly.
In addition, the Turquality program actually organizes
us to advance on the corporate platform. If you
are in a corporate structure, you should know how
make your purchase. The program says that you
should organize your sales, place and space designs
and HR works accordingly. Your staff imposes certain
sanctions on you under the following conditions.
On the one hand, while giving good incentives for our
goals, on the other hand, there is a great sanction
for establishing the corporate culture that we will
control ourselves.
How did you plan your production in line with new
targets?
At the end of 2019, we had a sales target of 60 million
dollars. As of now, we have achieved the target of approximately
40 million. We think we’re going to hit the
target by the end of the year. If you are aiming to grow
3 fold then your institution is regarded as successful.
Having a lot of carpet company in Turkey, it does not
require you to make huge investments in production.
If you operate the sales network properly, you already
have many partners to purchase the products of other
producers. We are currently receiving products from
18 companies. We want to fulfill unlimited requests
with limited resources. It is not healthy for each
product to be produced by ourselves. If something is
going to be laid down, we do it. We work with our partners
who are experts in the desired product. Today,
there are different products that China, India or Arab
countries are experts in. We are in favor of working
with experts in every business. We also have a new
restructuring plan for Algeria and Tunisia. We will
make the final decisions in the coming period.

A global brand of the wood-based panel industry,
Kastamonu Entegre brought together its melamine-surfaced
MDF and particleboard products, which
have given life to the living spaces since its establishment,
in an exclusive collection on the occasion of its
50th anniversary. The 50th Anniversary Exclusive Series
that is created from a retrospective perspective
for adaptation to the changes in decoration and design
trends from the 1970s to the present is eye-catching
with its wide range of colors and patterns.
Kastamonu Entegre, the leader of the wood-based
panel industry for half a century, presented its
melamine-surfaced MDF and particleboard products
to the industry in an exclusive collection for its 50th
anniversary. The 50th Anniversary Exclusive Series
is created based on the decoration and design trends
of the last 50 years from the retro style of the 1970s
to the splendid style of the 1980s, from the simplistic
line of the 1990s to the minimalist spirit of the 2000s
and today’s eclectic looks. Composed from Kastamonu
Entegre’s retrospective perspective, the 50th
Anniversary Exclusive Series offers a great variety
of applications for furniture, decoration and interior
arrangement through a wide range of designs and
combinations of materials. Appealing to various tastes
with delicate marble-and wooden-like samples,
the 50th Anniversary Exclusive Series is preferred for
kitchens, office furniture, shelves and wall coverings
to create contemporary spaces.
50th anniversary series combining quality with rich
details
Valencia, Vincenza, Sorrento, Cambridge, Lugano,
San Pietro and Richmond are, among others, the most
striking decors of the series for their appearances reflecting
rich details of the natural wood texture. Lagos
appeals to those who miss the 1990s when simplistic
lines were on the rise, while San Marino, Andorra
and Padova are pleasing to those who want to revive
the “cool” mood of the 2000s. As Trieste, Pesaro and
Treviso decors create large living spaces in small places,
Calcutta and Pietra, both standing out with their
marble look with vein effect, contribute a modern and
classical style to living and working spaces.

Üretiminin tamamını ülke içerisinde gerçekleştirerek
katma değerli ürünler çıkaran LCW Home, sektöründe
zirveyi hedeflemeye devam ediyor. Şuanda 23
ülkede 140 mağazada bulunduklarını söyleyen marka
Grup Müdürü Ümmühan Şan, önümüzdeki dönemlerde
koleksiyonlarını genişleterek çok daha farklı ürünleri
mağazalarda satışa sunacaklarını ifade etti. Bu
yılsonuna kadar sadece LCW Home adına mağazalar
açacaklarının da müjdesini veren Şan, son yıllardaki
gelişmeler ve hedefler hakkında bilgi verdi.
LCW Home olarak son dönemde yaptığınız çalışmalar
hakkında bilgi verir misiniz?
Şuanda yaklaşık 23 ülkede 140 noktadayız. Yurtiçinde
72, yurtdışında ise 68 mağazamız bulunuyor. Mağaza
sayımızı her geçen gün arttırarak çalışmalarımıza
devam ediyoruz. 2023 yılında ise hedefimiz, yurtiçi
ve yurtdışı olarak toplam 300 mağazaya ulaşmak.
2019 yılı bitmeden birkaç tane mağaza daha açmayı
planlıyoruz. Ama bu mağazalarımız sadece ev tekstili
ürünlerinin satıldığı, LCW Home markasına ait mağazalar
olacak.
2018 yılının mali sıkıntıları alım gücünü etkilediği gerçeğini
hepimiz biliyoruz. Ama buna rağmen biz marka
olarak küçülmeden, hatta ciromuzu %40’lara varan
oranlarda arttırarak bir büyüme gerçekleştirdik. Biz
gerekli geribildirimleri bizlere iletiyorlar. Eğer
mağazalarımızdaki bazı ürünler o ülkenin kültürüne
uymuyorsa, o ürünleri oraya göndermiyoruz. Bazen
de bizlere farklı ürünlerle alakalı o ülke müşterilerinden
talepler geliyor. Örneğin Arap ülkelerinde
bizim sattığımız yatakların daha büyüğü ve daha
genişi talep ediliyor. Hedefimiz tüm ülkelerde kabul
edilen trendlerden oluşan dünya çapında bir koleksiyon
oluşturmak.

LCW Home aims 300 stores by 2023
LCW Home Brand Group Manager
Ummuhan San: ”Our goal is to
offer a more global collection
of trends accepted in all countries.”
LCW Home, which produces all of its production in
the country and produces value-added products,
aims for a peak position in its sector. Group Manager
of the brand, of which products are currently sold
in 140 stores in 23 countries, said that they would
expand their collections in the coming periods and
offer many different products in their stores. San
also announced that they would only open stores
under the name of LCW Home until the end of this
year and gave information about the developments
and targets in coming years.
As LCW Home, can you tell us about your recent
works?
We have now operations in 140 locations in about 23
countries. We have 72 stores in Turkey and 68 stores
abroad. We are increasing our number of stores every
day. In 2023, our target is to reach a total of 300 stores
in Turkey and abroad. We plan to open a few more
stores before the end of 2019. But in these stores, only
home textile products belonging to LCW Home brand
will be sold.
We all know the fact that 2018 fiscal troubles affect
purchasing power of the people. But despite this, we
52
November - December 2019
have achieved a growth without shrinking as a brand
and even increased our turnover by up to 40%. We are
pleased with this trend. The markets have started to
enliven and we expect to return to normal performances
in the coming months.
Well, you said in our previous interview that you would
also make some changes to the product range. Could
you please explain the final point of your product range
and products that you are going to be featured?
We started this business mainly in the field of textile
industry that we know. We expanded our product
range by including bed, bathroom and floor coverings
in our stores. Then these products have become our
main products. In addition to this, our decorative and
home cosmetics products are also highly preferred in
the market.
We started to do different things in the carpet group.
We make carpets with different sizes and features.
Apart from printed products, we even began to talk
about hand woven products. We are meeting with
different brands for several projects related to this
subject. We want to offer the products of these brands
under their own names. In fact, our customers are
now expecting a collection of many varieties. We strive
to meet this expectation with our own production.
At the point we cannot meet, we supply products by
cooperating with other brands.
So, how are you doing in the field of exports?
We have a team interested in countries and studying
the peculiarities of different cultures. For example,
our employees who are either live in or out of Russia
and who know the culture of that region give us the
necessary feedback. If some of the products in our
stores do not match the culture of that country, we do
not send those products there. Sometimes, there are
demands from customers of that country for different
products. For example in Arab countries larger and
wider mattresses are demanded. Our goal is to offer a
worldwide collection of trends that are accepted and
demanded in all countries.

Sayın başkan, öncelikle sizi tanıyabilir miyiz?
1970 yılında Sındırgı’da doğdum. İlk, orta ve Lise tahsilimi
Sındırgı’da yaptım. Daha sonra Ankara Üniversitesi
Dil ve Tarih Coğrafya Fakültesi Coğrafya bölümünü
bitirdim. Diyarbakır Anadolu Lisesi, Sındırgı
Düğüncüler İlköğretim Okulu, Cumhuriyet İlköğretim
Okullarında Coğrafya Öğretmenliği yaptım. 2004-2009

Bu söz aslında Yağcıbedir’in önemini
anlatıyor. Halı sadece bir kimlik kartıdır. Yağcıbedir
benim için bir kültürdür. Bu isim Yaycıbey beyliğinden
geliyor. O zamanlar bu beylik devlete vergisini yay yaparak
ödermiş. Şuanda bu beyliğin soyu 18 kişi olarak
devam ediyor.

“If the flying carpet was real in the dreams

Balıkesir Sındırgı Municipality held
21st International Sındırgı
Yağcıbedir Carpet, Culture and Art
Days, hosted nearly 150 thousand
visitors in the festival.
An extraordinary festival in Balıkesir’s Sındırgı
district was held. This year, the 21st International
Sındırgı Yagcıbedir Carpet, Culture and Art Days has
been the scene of events in many different fields from
hand-crafts, local games, horse sports wrestling and
javelin to Yağcıbedir carpet. Ekrem Yavaş, the mayor
of Sındırgı, said they introduced Yağcıbedir carpets,
which gave their name to the art days, to the world in
this festival and selected the best Yağcıbedir carpets
and 10 countries and 12 provinces showed their folk
dances and hosted nearly 150 thousand visitors.
How did you do and do you work in Sındırgı?
After being elected in 2004, we made our strategic
plans as a municipality. Before the Istanbul-Izmir
road was built, those who traveled between these two
cities would pass through Sındırgı. After the construction
of the new road in order to avoid losing the importance
of Sindirgi in 2006, we made studies related to
tourism and we got efficiency. Thanks to the thermal
facility we have opened, 3000 houses have been warmed
up with that hot water brought from a distance
of 24 kilometers. That’s why we were registered as an
environmentalist municipality.
By encouraging people living outside the center to irrigated

Dear Mayor, can we first get to know you?
I was born in 1970 in Sındırgı. I did my primary, secondary

ourselves first, then our staff, then public institutions
and then our people. We are confident that we will
bring this district to better places with this belief. In
addition to this, there was a visitor that exceeded the
expectations for the festival this year. Our citizens
wanted to host visitors in their homes. They are the
fruit of this belief. As a result, the inhabitants understood
what tourism means. This is the most important
point for us. We carried this festival to an international
dimension. 120 stands are opened and 70 of these
stands are opened by Sındırgı people. So this district
has enough products to make a festival on its own. I
believe it is necessary to produce local natural products
and I wish everyone to benefit from it.
We are carpet domain. We have crowned the Yağcıbedir
monument which we made at the entrance of the
city. People think that matter will make them happy,
but in fact, what makes a man happy is meaning.
When the body is not covered with spirit, it cannot do
anything. We are trying to do things that will live the
tradition and culture that will reveal the spirit structure
of the people. If the people you see here don’t like
us, they won’t come here. It is because people come
where they feel comfortable.
How did you meet the carpet?
When I was in university, I made money selling carpets.
This is our father’s profession for us. We used
to collect carpets from here and then sell them to our
teachers in the teachers’ room. Later on, I started to
sell carpets to wholesalers. At that time, Cemil Çiçek
was the Minister of Family and Social Policies. They
gave us a scholarship during his time. Only after 8
months they gave it in bulk. I bought the carpet with
all of this money and my trading life started like this.
In 1992, we opened our shop here.
What does Yağcıbedir Carpet mean to you as a carpet?
“If the flying carpet was real in the dreams of Yuruk
girl, who weaved the life like weaving carpet noose to
noose, that carpet would be Yağcıbedir”.
This statement actually explains the importance of
Yağcıbedir. The carpet is just an ID card. Yağcıbedir
is a culture for me. This name comes from Yaycıbey
principality. At that time, this principality paid the
state tax by making a bow. Currently, this principality
has 18 people. 8 of them live in Dikili, 4 in Bergama,
5 in Sindirgi and one in Bigadiç. In our new project,
we will work with the university and relevant people.
As a result of this culture this culture will live again.
Together with the presidents of these four districts,
we brought this together for the first time this year.
After that we will make it continuous. Examples of this
project we have done that, be conducted in different
parts of Turkey, and we desire to be useful so that the
cultural inventory of our country.
In short, we must increase the number of our common
values. They have limited us administratively. We
have to take our memories back 3,000 years ago and
eliminate these boundaries. As a district, cultural and
individual sports branches and crafts live here, the
center is to turn Sındırgı.
