Muhammed

Türk: “Carpets

reflecting the

self-concept of

our country are

very important

to us and it is our

primary duty to

keep this alive.”

Muhammed Türk is on the guest designer chair for

this issue of our magazine. When he was a child, he

discovered his design talent in the carpentry. Later,

after painting, calligraphy and ornamentation, he met

with the carpet. Saying “Carpet is a surface on which

I paint”, Muhammed expresses that his aim is to keep

the carpet, reflecting our individualism, and culture

alive. We listen to the rest of the interview from his

mouth.

Let’s know you a little…

I was born in Edirne in 1989. After completing my

primary education in Havsa, district of Edirne, I

continued my high school education in Edirne. After

studying in the painting department of Trakya University

Faculty of Fine Arts for a year, I decided to study

in the center of art in Istanbul. I have graduated from

Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts, Traditional

Turkish Arts department and continue my master’s

degree in the same department. I have been working

at Kirkit Rugs for 4 years as a designer. In this workshop,

I do not only make carpet designs but also continue

painting.

Nowadays art and design are growing together. I

believe that not only design, or just art, is enough, but

also somehow to use them together in this growth.

How did design begin in your life?

Design took place in my life because of my father. My

father is a carpenter and I received my first aesthetic

education from my father as a furniture design. In the

years after that, I was more interested in painting. Later,

I was interested in calligraphy and ornamentation

art. Now I see that design fields and environmental

factors played a determining role in my life.

How did the recent events affect the design to you?

The epidemic we have recently experienced has negatively

affected the field of design and art. People’s

primary priorities have changed. The most important

priority was to be protected from the virus, and the

subsequent one was to maintain its financial position.

Areas that would not affect vital functions such as art

and design were left behind.

So what does Carpet mean to you? How is the carpet

different from other design products?

That I entered the carpet sector occurred due to the
