Innovate or adapt
innovations to
grow
There is probably no one single industry which is
not suitable for innovations. Some may need or
deserve more but some do less. For decades,
the traditionally slow-moving mattress industry
innovated at its own pace. In fact, very large
portions of the population have not gotten to
sleep quickly, stayed asleep well, or woken up
easily. For something so fundamental to human
well-being, this has been a curious exception
to the rapid pace of innovation occurring in so
many other corners of the economy.
Industry giants have accelerated their studies
for innovation and they are betting that you will pay premium money for
significant improvements to your sleep. With the documented need for
sleep as well as an increasing number of people who aren’t getting the
correct amount of healthy sleep, it’s little wonder the business of sleep is
booming. In fact, innovations to help people sleep are a multimillion-dollar
industry.
Historically, you could either have soft comfort for easy sleep, or firm
support for better posture, but not both. Innovators are now breaking
that old proposition.
There are many of those innovators, inventing a hyper-elastic polymer
grid that stretches to support areas of pressure while cradling sleepers in
the mattress material, providing overall support which also conforms to
body shape while some other innovators are using more familiar gel tops
to mattresses to provide new cradling sensations. Air-conditioning stuffs
were developed for the construction of mattresses and cool ticking fabrics
were innovated to make sleep most pleasurable thing. Material and
component manufacturers helped to overall bedding industry. The last
decade witnessed many of these innovations. Companies who innovated
these or others which adapted them to their manufacturing lines have
become the most successful and proud brands.
AGRO – the first innerspring
manufacturer with a fully circular
product portfolio
AGRO International, leading
manufacturer of innersprings
for the mattress and upholstery
industry, backs up its claim of being a
pioneer when it comes to sustainable
sleeping comfort. The company is the
world’s first innerspring manufacturer
now to offer a completely circular
product portfolio. All products from
its main production site in Bad Essen
/ Germany are made of components
– wire, fabric and adhesive – that can
completely return into the production
cycle.
The first fully C2C ready innerspring,
A.NEXT Uni – Pocket PES, has been
introduced to the market by AGRO
in 2020. This awarded state-of-theart
innerspring consists of fabric
and adhesive made of Polyester.
AGRO’s green ambitions have been
underlined by introducing another
two circular solutions in 2022:
A.NEXT Uni – Pocket PP and
the recycling-based solution
A.NEXT Arise.
Due to the positive feedback of
customers and the company’s
own vision of propelling circular
economy forward, AGRO has
taken enormous efforts during the
12 SleepTech • July - August
last months. The entire product
portfolio has been developed
into the AGRO Uni design.
This means: the customer is
no longer limited to single
products, but each of the
AGRO innersprings from the
Bad Essen site is suited to
produce circular mattresses.
“This step has been another milestone
to us”, CEO Dominik Meyer says. “By
replacing our conventional formulation
of adhesive by an innovative PPbased
one, a major project has been
completed. This brand new adhesive
formulation has been developed
in
cooperation with
an expert and
adjusted to the
AGRO products
and machinery. The
result are sustainable
solutions that are
affordable and even
suited for the high volume
market.”
This work has also being
recognized externally: In
June, AGRO received
the German Award for
Sustainability Projects* for
the second time in a row for the
development of the circular pocket
innerspring based on PP (A.NEXT Uni
– Pocket PP). And the development
never stands still: “We continue refining
the details. At the same time, there are
further pioneering green projects to
follow. We are working together with
our customers on solutions for mattress
recycling. And we are constantly
refining the recycling process for our
production waste to complete a circular
economy on company level.”
AGRO is persuaded that
investing in circular economy is
investing in the future. “More and
more, the consumers are sensitive to
the environmental issue. And if this is
not enough, legislative demands will
force the industry to re-think.”
HANDS UP
FOR SUSTAINABLE
SLEEPING COMFORT
AGRO’s portfolio is fully circular now –
what does this mean?
AGRO is the world’s first innerspring manufacturer to
offer exclusively products, whose components – wire,
fabric and adhesive – can completely return into the
production cycle. Our pocket innersprings are classified
in two different material technologies (PES and PP),
which have both been awarded due to their pioneering
approach.
What about existing pocket innerspring products?
In our conventional pocket innersprings (PP-based
fabric), an innovative PP-based adhesive has replaced
the conventional formulation. In addition, we offer
products with already recycled PP-based fabric
(A.NEXT Arise) and a PES-based solution.
What does this mean for the customers?
You get the product you are familiar with –
at even improved quality. And by using AGRO’s circular
innersprings, you are optimally prepared for the
circular economy to come, including corresponding
legislative demands. This step is the greatest
opportunity for all parties involved – including the
environment.
For a Livable World,
Nature-friendly Packaging:
Green Steel Wire
We are aiming to get our energy from nature
Nova is an “Environmentally
Friendly” organization, which
complies with national and
international requirements and has ISO
50001 Energy management system
that is applicable at international level.
With this standard; we provide
● to reduce energy expenditures by
managing energy consumption with a
systematic approach,
● to use resources effectively and
productively,
● to protect environment,
● to decrease carbon emission.
We started working on solar energy
system (SES) for electricity production
and began to work on installing 4.1Mw
solar panels on the roof of our factory.
We took a big step to get our energy
from nature. With wire baskets up to
1000 kg, we are reducing labor costs
during insertion into the machine.
Thanks to the more winding advantage
of pressed coiled wire in the same
volume, we are offering more products
than normal coils by saving storage
space. Due to the strong winding
technology, the pressed wire is stronger
against distortion and unraveling.
So, it provides a permanent solution
against problems that may occur
during use, storage and transportation.
Thanks to the anti-wear feature of
the new packaging, we are increasing
its durability and minimize wear with its
strong structure. We are strengthening
our environmentally friendly policy
by saving time and disposal costs in
the recycling section due to unused
cardboard cores. With the packaging
solutions we develop, we are supporting
the creation of ‘less waste’ and we
are minimizing waste generation by
using polyethylene packaging material
Nova Deputy General Manager
Murat Zengin: For the sake of
sustainability, we continue to
develop projects that reduce
carbon emissions by using
renewable energy sources in all
our production processes.
in all the products we produce. Instead
of increasing the amount of waste
with the use of cardboard cores in the
packaging of steel wires, we prevent
the use of cardboard cores, thanks to
the pressing and strapping process
we have developed, and prevent 1000
trees from being cut down per year.
For a cleaner and healthier environment,
we are continuing our projects
and investments reducing carbon
emissions in our production processes.
IN THE LIGHT OF
DEVELOPMENTS IN THE WORLD
TEXTILE AND MATTRESSs SECTOR
IN TURKEY
By Recep Kezik, General Manager of Comfytex
Before carrying out the evaluation about the future of the textile and mattress
sector in Turkey, let’s analyze the place of Turkey and its position in its geography
in the light of developments in the world.
As you know, the most important
factors determining the wealth
of countries in the world are that
countries have energy resources or
access and dominate energy resources
outside their own countries.
Today, there are mainly four power
centers that are directing world trade
with economy, technology and defense
industry skills. These are respectively
the United States of America,
the People’s Republic of China, the EU
(Mainly England, France, and Germany)
and Russia. The purpose of these
four power centers is to be a monolithic
power in the world and to dominate
other countries with the opportunities
they hold. So, what is happening in
the struggle for hegemony today and
what commercial advantages does
this bring for Turkey? Let’s take a look
here.
VIEW
As we followed from the world media,
the USA, as the superpower of
the world, was managing all trade
channels and energy resources by
using the military means it has, and
was controlling the world economy by
ensuring the energy trade in the world
to be carried out with its own currency,
the American dollar after the Second
World War. Especially with the disintegration
of the USSR, it has continued
this situation for a long time as a
stand-alone power. But, that especially
Russia has started to sell its natural
18 SleepTech • July - August
gas resources to Europe and Asia, and
that it revealed its claim to be hegemony
coming from its history by regaining
its economy, and at the same time the
attacks that China, which has been
quietly gaining strength as the world’s
cheap labor and production base
for years, did at the technology and
defense industry in the last 20 years,
have ended the USA’s claim to be a
power alone.
Since the USA which is aware of this,
know that it is not possible to directly
conflict with Russia and China that
are the nuclear powers, has been also
trying to keep the balance of power
under its control by carrying out
policies that will prevent both countries
from trading economically and ensure
them to fight the surrounding countries
that have conflicts of interest to fight.
With the Covid-19 epidemic and the
international pandemic problem, that
the USA imposed the import duties on
the Chinese government, and that the
USA, which controls the world maritime
transport, especially carried out
the policies that will increase the freight
prices, and thus that it tries to cause
the export of Chine to be lost are
the most concrete indicators of this.
Concordantly, the actions increasing
the tension between China and Taiwan
are also the result of the US’s policy of
being the only power. With this action,
in the simplest sense, it aims to shift
the trade in China to other countries
of the world in parts and thus to cease
the threat.
We see that the USA is trying to do for
Russia the same as what it is trying to
do for China. Russia, which met especially
the energy needs of Europe in a
significant amount before the Ukraine
War, recovered rapidly both in the
arms industry and trade and increased
its commercial momentum and
military activities in the Mediterranean
and African countries. EU countries
especially Germany and France, which
met their security needs with NATO
started to define Russia as a trade
partner rather than a threat. While this
increasing unity in energy and food
supply strengthened Russia, it caused
a decrease in arms sales of the USA to
EU countries due to the perception of
the security threat of Russia and in its
control power over EU countries. This
situation caused the idea of establishing
an EU army, France led, to be on
the agenda. That the French leader
stated that “it was brain dead” for the
US-controlled NATO armed force was
the most prominent expression of the
thought.
In this situation, that the USA provoked
Russia and Ukraine for war
strengthened that European Union
members perceived Russia as a
threat. On the pretext of war like the
USA is trying to do to China, it forces

oth itself and all world countries,
especially the EU, to stop trade with
Russia in order to break Russia’s economic
power. For this purpose, Russia
was removed from the international
payment system, Russian assets
and bank accounts were confiscated
in Europe and the USA, and even
practices from sports competitions
to artistic activities to support Russophobe
in order to strengthen social
segregation have been executed. In
that case, while Russia lost its claim to
be a monolithic power due to the war
conditions, and the countries, having
a rising threat perception, transferred
their budgets to the defense industry,
the USA took the EU under control
with security concerns, forced Russia
into economic collapse in the war
and embargo points, and sold a large
amount of weapons to the parties and
became winner in the process.
While this power struggle in the world
is bringing blood, tears and economic
deprivation to humanity and some
countries, it opens a gate of opportunity
for some countries and societies.
We know the positive effect of the
economic struggle of the USA and the
EU with China on Turkey, according
to the export figures for the period of
January-May 2022. The export figures,
which were around 80 billion dollars
in the first five months by years, have
exceeded 102 billion dollars in the first
five months of 2022, and this increase
is like this when there is an international
slowdown in foreign markets
and a contraction due to international
inflation. We explained the cause and
effect relationship of this increase
within the framework of the concept of
power struggle.
Another positive macro-scale effect
to be seen in the Turkish economy
expected in the next period will be the
tendency to close the current account
deficit. It is obvious that the basic dynamic
of this will be met by the natural
gas and oil resources to be extracted
from our country’s borders, in addition
that EU will meet its natural gas and oil
needs from Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan
as a result of the pressure applied
to Russia, and the result of the Israel
and Arab gas will be transported to
Europe via Turkey.
Along with these conditions, we
mentioned, we also feel the effects of
high inflation and global trade recession
in the world and in Turkey as the
cost of living, the decrease in people’s
purchasing power, and the difficulty in
accessing money. Despite the negative
effects of inflation, the opportunities
made by the power struggle for Turkey
remain as a reality and they wait prudent
businessmen and managers who
will take advantage of this opportunity.
Speaking of prudent management,
this is similar to a pilot’s flight, the
foresights such as many indicators to
be followed for the flight, advanced
equipment for the comfort of the flight,
the skills to use them, perfect service
for the satisfaction of the customers,
etc. are formed by their presence and
synchronization. In each of our articles,
we will proceed by referring to one of
them.
Now that have realized the pending
possibilities for Turkey in the next period,
by looking at what’s going on in
the framework of this power struggle
in the world, let’s take a look at the
opportunities and significant ones in
the textile and mattress sector.
In our previous article, we mentioned
the influence of R&D studies
on obtaining value-added products,
this time let’s talk about the effect of
domestic and foreign fairs on trade.
The first move to be done in order
to evaluate the opportunities made
by macro struggles and cause them
to contribute to Turkey’s export and
development is to access the market
and reach the customer. As you know,
ISPA EXPO fair, which was held in
America in the past months, was an
important fair with the intense participation
of Turkish manufacturers and
the participation of many sectors and
international companies, where our
country’s Textile and Mattress products
were introduced to the American
and world markets. That the density
of Chinese companies has decreased
significantly at this fair and the trade
gap made is partially met by Turkish
manufacturers is a very important
opportunity for the development of our
country’s exports. Fairs such as Heimtextil,
Premiere Vision etc. held in European
countries and IBIA Expo Fair,
start for those who do not have international
fair experience. It is expected
that many European firms will be both
visitors and exhibitors at the fair to be
held in Istanbul. I would like to end my
article here by citing the short dialogue
we had with the purchasing manager
of America’s second largest mattress
manufacturer a few months ago. In
Turkish terms, the moral of a story;
- Mr. Adam, Why are you shifting your
raw material needs from China mostly
to Turkey? You do not focus your
attention on Egypt, India and Pakistan,
especially Mexico. Are you determined
to transfer your supply channels from
China to other countries in the medium
and long term or is this a temporary
situation depending on freight prices?
- Mr. Recep, the quality of workmanship
in Turkey is higher than in other
countries, the production technologies
are old especially in Mexico,
and Turkey is rapidly investing in
new technological textile production
machines. The problem with China is a
supra-governmental problem, a policy
problem, even if presidents and rulers
change, fundamental suppression
will not, for this reason, we started to
distribute our supply channels and
investments to other world countries.
Hope it is useful, greetings.
New technologies
in yarn production
NEW TECHNOLOGIES
IN YARN PRODUCTION
PERISCOPE
By Adnan Türker Özen Iplik Key Account Manager
While talking about the history of yarn, we
mentioned the developments in yarn production
systems and machines as in every
field. PC-controlled machines have taken their place
in yarn production as well as in every field.
It can be produced in a more uniform structure,
homogeneously and with minimum error. It is very
easy to adapt to the machines in which the yarn is
used. In addition to machines in yarn production, the
main developments are experienced in raw material
production processes.
Control or improvement in natural fibers can be done
in the physical production part. In synthetic fibers,
with the improvements in their chemical structures,
strength, elasticity, tensile, etc. properties have become
much easier to control than before, without the
need for additional processes.
Adding properties such as water repellency, fire
retardancy, antistatic to the yarns produced in the last
period, It has made it very easy to add features to the
products such as work safety, outdoor, home textile,
defense industry sectors. The developments in automotive,
furniture, bedding, packaging, fabric, sponge,
Adnan Türker
leather and yarns have provided many advantages to
the manufacturers.
Apart from these, with the development of dye and
chemical additives, the colored yarns have some
different properties. In summary there is always a new
development in yarn production technologies as in all
areas of life.
Pu foam compressing and packaging
machine to reduce economic costs
and environmental impact
In the last few years, the logistics
sector has been experiencing
some critical situation, due to
the suspension for the pandemic,
the post-pandemic recovery
and the geopolitical instability.
This translates into an increase in
the cost of shipping. Therefore,
optimizing shipments becomes
crucial.
Let’s consider the polyurethane
sector. The great advantage of
flexible PU Foam is that it can
be compressed. This gives PU
Foam producers the possibility to
increase the n° of items shipped
by using a compressing and
packaging machine. Let’s take into
consideration an “example” block
of 2x2x1.2 m, volume 4.8 m3,
density 30 kg /m3 and kPa 3.5.
On a standard truck it is possible
to load 12-13 uncompressed
WHICH SOLUTIONS DOES DOLPHIN
PACK PROPOSE?
We develop and produce several
machines for packing and compressing
PU Foam:
• / PELÈR, designed to vacuum
flat pack and compress PU
blocks, reducing the volume up to
75%*.
We can then load 40/42 blocks
on the truck, instead of 12.
• / LEVANTE, to compress
blocks and rolls in the form of a
roll, reducing the volume up to
81%*
We can load 50/55 blocks.
• / BURIAN, to compress first
in flat with a 35-micron PE LD
and then in roll using a 40-micron
stretch. This reduces packaging
costs and the volume up to 79%*.
We can load 46/48 blocks. *The
compression range depends on
the technical characteristics of
the polyurethane and its quality.
The compression % and must be
evaluated case by case.
Thanks to Dolphin Pack machines,
on a “sample shipment”
of 45 blocks of polyurethane, we
go from having to use 4 standard
trucks to using only 1, with a possible
economic saving of 70-75%.
GREATER EFFICIENCY AND
SUSTAINABILITY
Dolphin Pack’s packaging machines
also help reducing the
environmental impact of the
supply chain. The reduction in the
number of trucks or containers
means fewer tons of CO2 into
the environment. To conclude,
Dolphin Pack provides packaging
solutions that allow greater
automation and efficiency, space
and cost savings, and lower environmental
impact. To the benefit
of all.
Fair
Sustainability drives sales:
Messe Frankfurt aiming for
€400 million
Messe Frankfurt is back
on the international trade
fair stage, including at its
Frankfurt base. Since April, they
have been able to hold events
without any restrictions whatsoever.
Despite the difficult economic
situation in financial years 2020
and 2021 owing to the pandemic,
the company continued to invest
and took important strategic
decisions for its future. In addition
to digitalization, Messe Frankfurt
is working to make its business
practices even more sustainable.
Speaking at the Corporate Press
Conference earlier today, Wolfgang
Marzin, President and Chief Executive
Officer of Messe Frankfurt,
was optimistic: “The high level of
interest in events held under the
Messe Frankfurt umbrella, both
in Germany and internationally,
permits us to look to the future
with confidence and optimism. If
everything goes according to plan,
if we are free to organize trade fairs
– and, in turn, if the event business
continues to return to normal –
we expect sales for the current
financial year to be more than
€400 million.” Messe Frankfurt has
had to contend with the challenges
of the pandemic over financial
years 2020 and 2021. Due to the
cancelled spring events, sales in
financial year 2021 (around €154
million) were even lower than in
financial year 2020 (2020: approx.
€257 million; 2019: approx. €736
million). Marzin: “By taking extensive
measures – with the active
support of our shareholders – we
succeeded in providing the Group
with sufficient liquidity.” As things
currently stand, this will keep
Messe Frankfurt fully financed until
the end of 2023. As the global
economy is faced with new conditions
and challenges, industry and
commerce have high expectations
of their sector platforms and new
perspectives. Over the past two
years, Messe Frankfurt has greatly
expanded its digital expertise both
in its company and at its events.
Customized formats were developed
for each sector and a content
mix of different communication
formats was geared towards
the relevant target groups.
SUSTAINABLE FOR FUTURE
GENERATIONS
The Messe Frankfurt Group is
continuing to drive forward sustainability
as a central pillar of its
corporate strategy and part of its
corporate DNA. As Wolfgang Marzin
emphasized: “Messe Frankfurt
pursues an integral sustainability
approach in our responsibility
towards the environment and as
a socially responsible company
with sustainable business practices.”
The Group, which has been
a member of UN Global Compact
– the world’s most important
initiative for sustainable corporate
management – since 2010,
has continued to lay important
groundwork for a green future
this year. With the Sustainability
Board, it set up a company body
that includes senior management
from different disciplines and that
drives forward sustainable development
at Messe Frankfurt – from
goals and measures to ultimate
implementation by the relevant
departments. As Wolfgang Marzin
explained: “We have defined areas
of activity and formalized them in
a Messe Frankfurt Sustainability
Governance Code. The Code is
based on the specifications of the
UN Global Compact and on the
accepted general standards with
regard to sustainability and climate
protection.” The Code will apply
for the entire Group. Marzin: “Our
company aims to generate profits
in a socially and environmentally
compatible way so that future generations
will be able to engage in
responsible business development
as well.”
SPACE AND CAPACITY FOR NEW
VENTURES
As Detlef Braun, Member of the
Executive Board of Messe Frank-
28 SleepTech • July - August

Fair
furt, stressed: “Messe Frankfurt
believes that it is far better to be
active than passive. Our core
brands are assets with which we
generate growth. Every now and
then, we also need to undertake
some ‘hygiene measures’ to keep
our events healthy.” This also
involves parting company with
subject areas that have no future
in the sector and on the market, as
was decided in the case of Musikmesse
recently. The consumer
goods fairs at the company’s
Frankfurt base are being strategically
restructured. As of February
2023, Ambiente, Christmasworld
and Creativeworld will be grouped
together under one roof. Paperworld
will be merged with this
new format. Outside Germany, the
brand will be continued in Dubai,
India and China. Braun: “With this
reorientation, we are creating a
one-stop shop for the global consumer
goods ordering season –
the only one of its kind in the world
to date.” Messe Frankfurt rounds
off the physical events relating to
its consumer goods portfolio with
the digital products and services
from Nextrade and Conzoom
Solutions.
The powerhouse textile trio Techtextil,
Texprocess and Heimtextil
Summer Special was successfully
restarted at the company’s Frankfurt
base. With its flagship events
within the exhibition grounds and
the new Neonyt Lab – held as a
consumer event this year – and the
activities in the city during Frankfurt
Fashion Week, there have
been synergies that are unique
anywhere in the world. And these
synergies affect the processes
and products from the entire value
chain in the international textile
and fashion industry. With around
60 textile events in all, Messe
Frankfurt is helping to increase the
visibility of the UN’s Sustainable
Development Goals. As part of its
Texpertise network, the company
has been working closely together
with the Conscious Fashion and
Lifestyle Network and the United
Nations Office for Partnerships
since 2019.
Messe Frankfurt is expecting more
people to attend its Nordstil Summer
in early July than in the previous
year. Similarly, Automechanika
– which will be held between 3 and
17 September – is well on its way
back to a size befitting an international
event. An estimated 2,500
exhibiting companies are expected.
80 percent of manufacturers
are coming from outside Germany
LOCATION INVESTMENTS
Uwe Behm, Member of the Executive
Board of Messe Frankfurt,
stressed: “Scientific studies have
shown that events can still be held
safely with state-of-the-art air-conditioning
technology, careful monitoring
and additional safety and
hygiene measures, even during
challenging pandemic times.
Together with RWTH Aachen and
Heinz Trox Wissenschafts gGmbH,
Messe Frankfurt conducted a
study on air quality in halls, which
demonstrated that the indoor air in
the tested halls was safe. Up until
the end of the year, Messe Frankfurt’s
event calendar in Frankfurt
and around the world is well filled
with both its own events and a
wide range of guest events. Behm:
“We can once again play host to
around 200 trade fairs, congresses
and other events in Frankfurt.
We will be opening our doors to a
major premiere in July with Eurobike,
the central platform for the
bike and future mobility universe.
This means that Frankfurt will be
a showcase for sustainable and
alternative mobility solutions for the
future. Due to the great demand,
the exhibition area around Hall 9.1
was expanded so that we have
around 150,000 square meters
of total exhibition space at our
disposal.” There are also major
events scheduled for next year, including
the Ball des Sports, which
is returning to the Festhalle after a
long break.
As Uwe Behm explains: “We are
investing in our diverse locations,
in a wide service portfolio and in
sustainability – this has long been
a constant necessity rather than
an optional extra. Thanks to its
flexible infrastructure, the Frankfurt
exhibition grounds can accommodate
several different events at the
same time. Behm also emphasized
that it had been the right decision
not to interrupt the construction
work on Hall 5 during the past
two pandemic years: “Within the
scope of our general contractor
agreement, it was possible to keep
costs under control; these are
not affected by the sudden rise in
construction prices either.” This
also means that construction work
on Hall 5 can be completed earlier
than planned. The hall will be going
into operation for the first time
in early February 2023 with the
spring trade fairs. Progress is also
being made with the construction
project around the Messeplatz entrance
and the Sparda Bank Tower
at the south side of the Frankfurt
exhibition grounds on Europaallee.
Once it has been completed
as planned in 2025, the Frankfurt
exhibition grounds will have a
four-story entrance on a surface
area of 5,000 square meters. This
will offer customers ideal connections
and reachability from the
south as well and will further optimize
its inner-city location, which is
unique the world over.
Feryal Fermuar Company Owner Akın Bebek shared policies of his firm on
the importance of fairs in
stated that the products
said the following on the topic, “In
my opinion, fairs are the best opportunities
for a firm to promote its
CAN YOU SHARE WITH US HOW
YOU CAME TO THESE DAYS AS A
YOUR SUCCESS?
Firstly, I should state that this is
not an easy. Like every corporate
firm, we came to these days by
going through very difficult ways.
Our success’s secret is to take
care of your business and to follow
it constantly. If you do not follow
your work in the textile sector, you
more, customer satisfaction and
timely delivery are among the most
important issues for us. That we
want to be a solution partner to
our customers, not just a supplier,
has always moved us to development.
YOU EMPLOY 100 PEOPLE IN AN
AREA OF 9000 SQUARE METERS
AND PRODUCE 40 MILLION METERS
PER YEAR. DO YOU HAVE ANY
THOUGHTS ON INCREASING YOUR
PRODUCTION ACTIVITIES, MAKING
NEW INVESTMENTS OR EXPANDING
YOUR EMPLOYMENT CAPACITY IN
THE COMING YEARS?
Like every corporate firm having a
vision for the future, we, of course,
have a growth target in the next
years. Of course, this will be a
controlled growth. We are increasing
our production capacity and
employment every year according
to the supply of the sector.
Do you plan to direct to different
areas in the mattress industry or
make investments in these areas?
We have recently made a big
investment in narrow weaving (piping)
and roving as a different field in
the mattress industry. We opened
a new factory having a closed area
of 7500 m2 and a total area of
18,000 m2.
CAN YOU MENTION YOUR EXPORT
CAPACITY, THE COUNTRIES IN
WHICH YOU ARE IN THE MARKET
AND YOUR SEARCH FOR NEW
MARKETS?
The narrow woven, zipper and
roving products we produce have
all the necessary documents and
certificates for export, and as of
today the share of exports in our
production is 50%. Of course, this
rate varies from time to time. We
have exports to the European market,
the Balkan market, and African
countries and we have targets
to enter the markets of overseas
countries in the future.
HOW DO YOU FIND THE EFFECT OF
FAIRS ON EXPORTS? WHICH FAIRS
DO YOU PARTICULARLY ATTEND OR
PLAN TO ATTEND?
For me, the fairs are the best
opportunities for a firm to promote
its products, enter new markets
and introduce themselves. But
this does not mean that there will
be a demand burst immediately
after participation in the fair. Just
as working with excitement and
energy while preparing for the fair,
the same should continue after the
end of the fair so that new customers
should not lose interest after
participating in the fair. Sometimes,
even the returns of the fairs, seeming
very negative, can occur after 2
or 3 years. The ones we especially
attend are European mattress
and home textile fairs, and we are
planning to participate in American
and the Far Eastern mattress and
home textile fairs in the future.
Now, the number of countries
to which we export machinery
has exceeded 105. Our biggest
export is the American market.
We are getting stronger day by
day thanks to our companies and
abroad. Of course, that we are
always looking for new markets
is continuing. In recent years, we
concentrating on the Asian market.
Our main goal is to provide the
HOW DO YOU FIND THE CURRENT
Turkey is one of the leading countries
in the mattress sub-industry
sector in the world. This is due to
quality firms serving the mattress
I believe that we will come to a
We are constantly increasing our
production capacity and also
expanding and enlarging our
production areas, and constantly
updating and renewing our
in the sector,. We will give the
good news of our new factory and
in a short time in order to
CAN YOU MENTION THE R&D AND
INNOVATION STUDIES YOU FOLLOW
FOR MATTRESS ADHESIVE?
Our country, which is one of the
few mattress manufacturers and
suppliers in the world, has become
a more important and larger producer
especially during and after
the pandemic. This requires new
country markets, new standards,
new technology and demands.
We are renewing and developing
the types and features of our
products accordingly, so that our
producers do not have any problems,
especially in the country’s
standards and demands in these
new markets. Our close contacts
with cutting-edge technology centers,
countries and scientists in the
chemical industry have increased,
and we are constantly working and
researching with them in mutual
consultation.
We are using the scientific facilities
of these centers including our
own laboratories in line with the
interests of our customers and our
country.
The producers can produce
out their shipments and deliveries
without any worries for their
customers in Europe and the USA,
having a high standard of living.
CAN YOU MENTION THE
IMPORTANCE OF FAIRS FOR YOU
AND THE SECTOR? WHICH FAIRS
ARE YOU PLANNING TO ATTEND IN
NEXT PERIODS?
Unfortunately, the fairs were either
canceled or tried to virtually be
held with limited opportunities due
to the restriction of communication
and transportation in the world
during the pandemic process.
Even if communication has become
easier thanks to the Internet,
the conventional fairs have never
lost their importance for us on the
contrary, they have gained more
importance.
Fairs are places and occasions for
us to catch up, socialize and commune
with our customers, whom
we see as friends and solution
partners, and to introduce our new
products to them closely.
We are planning to participate in
many fairs both in our country and
in the global furniture sub-industry
and mattress sector.
DID YOU REACH THE CUSTOMER
POTENTIAL YOU EXPECTED AT THE
SLEEP EXPO MIDDLE EAST FAIR,
WHICH YOU ATTENDED RECENTLY?
As Osa Kımya, we had attended
this fair before and had good
memories. This year’s fair has also
exceeded our expectations and
it has been very productive and
positive for us in terms of meeting
with both our current customers
and our old customers.
The efficiency of our firm in the
region and the awareness of our
products have increased even
more thanks to this fair.
CAN YOU MENTION YOUR EXPORT
RANGE AND FOREIGN TRADE
MARKETING TACTICS?
Especially the importance and
amount of the bulky products
such as furniture, which have high
transport costs in the local production,
have increased very much at
economies and governments of
the countries due to the problems
and cost increases experienced in
the transportation sector.
The current conjuncture has
increased the need for raw materials
and semi-finished products
of furniture manufacturers in other
countries. This naturally gave us
the opportunity and chance to
serve more of our foreign customers
and export to them.
Our international sectoral experience
of years enables us to reach
customers in foreign countries
easily and to help them by knowing
their needs.
We will soon launch our new trade
projects in order to provide faster,
more reliable and more economical
service to customers in the foreign
market.
VK Mattress Machinery:
Indian market is like
an undiscovered ocean
Recep Kütüklü, Sales Engineer of VK Mattress Machinery, shared his observations about
India Matresstech Fair with Sleeptech magazine.
Recep Kütüklü, speaking to
our magazine editor Furkan
Akar, stated that the fair became
very productive both for them
and for other Turkish firms.
MR. RECEP, HOW DID THE INDIA
MATRESSTECH FAIR GO FOR YOU?
HOW DID YOU PRODUCE AN EFFECT
AT THE FAIR AS VK MAKINE?
The fair has been very productive
for us. The mattress sector in the
Indian market is still at its beginner
level. For this reason, a high potential
market atmosphere prevails.
As VK Mattress Machinery, we
experienced a very successful fair
mainly for bonnell spring machines.
Especially these machines received
serious orders. All our orders are
confirmed. To reiterate, the fair was
really productive. The Indian market
is a very productive market. It has
a market potential that Turkish
firms should definitely take part in
and the Turkish mattress industry
should focus its attention on.
54 SleepTech • July - August

ACCORDING TO YOUR IMPRESSIONS
FROM THE FAIR, WHAT KIND OF
CONTRIBUTIONS DID THE FAIR
HAVE TO THE TURKISH MATTRESS
INDUSTRY? CAN WE GET YOUR
OBSERVATIONS AND EVALUATIONS
ON THIS TOPIC?
Here are my impressions of it: it is
actually like an undiscovered ocean,
a virgin island. Mattress culture has
not yet formed and there is a mattress
culture in a very small area.
The most important point is that the
mattress has not yet become an
industry, and both India’s domestic
entrepreneurs and foreign investors
have not yet made a breakthrough
in this regard. If we evaluate this in
the long term, that even around 20
% -30% demand for mattresses is
generated means the production
of millions of mattresses and, of
course, the establishment of an
industry in that region. Because the
Turkish mattress sector is also a
very strong market, it will not have
any trouble to meet this demand
in India and Turkish companies
will have a serious presence in the
Indian market. We, as VK Mattress
Machinery, will continue to do whatever
we have to do in this regard,
as we have done for 15 years.
Night Comfort Bedding
excels in custom design
As a successful exporting company operating in the component segment of the bedding
industry, the firm aims at supplying for the leading companies in the sector. Night
Comfort Bedding enables its consumers to make sales without wasting time with its
rapidly growing system and quality products.
As a mattress component
provider, Night Comfort Bedding
continues its activities
in Kayseri with its technological
production facilities and qualified
workforce. The company offers
great opportunities to its customers
and gathers many mattress
components under one roof. Night
Comfort Bedding, which prevents
its customers from losing time by
following many suppliers, gains the
appreciation of its consumers with
its economical price approach.
Combining quality with a wide
range of products, the company
helps its customers in all circumstances.
Night Comfort Bedding
gives great support to its experienced
team to make everything
easy in trading. The company,
which thinks that its customers
should focus only on their sales,
continues its production under the
best conditions. We received information
about the company’s vision
and export targets from General
Manager Atakan Turhan.
WHEN DID YOU START
PRODUCTION? YOU HAVE ALSO
STARTED OPERATIONS IN TURKEY.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO HEAR YOUR
VIEWS ON THIS SUBJECT.
As Night Comfort Bedding, we
started production activities in the
Netherlands about 18 years ago.
We already produce products such
as topper and mattress and offer
them to our customers in Europe.
Recently, the need for a cover has
increased and the industry’s demand
in this direction has also increased.
Therefore, we decided to
make an investment in Turkey. We
started our production activities in
Turkey with a focus on quality and
export. The demand for roll pack
mattresses in the world mattress
market has also increased tremendously.
Due to the pandemic period,
people started to show great
interest in the washable covers.
Therefore, as a company, we want
to reflect our production experience
in Europe and our experience in
exports to our activities in Turkey.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT
E-COMMERCE? WHAT KIND OF
WORK DO YOU DO TO INCREASE
THE PRODUCT CAPACITIES OF YOUR
CUSTOMERS?
We started the production of mattress
cases, pillowcases, toppers
and mattress borders. In the near
future, this product range will continue
to increase. As we all know,
e-commerce is rapidly increasing its
share in sales channels. So, speed
is much more important now. Specially
for millennial; they do not go
to store, they just want to click and
get it. We think this will also create
a chance for some small businesses
to compete with sector leaders.
We offer our customers a faster
production phase to increase
their production capacity. We offer
our customers to get rid of many
production steps. Thanks to these
intermediate products we produce,
our customers increase their production
capacities very quickly.
Profile
HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE
PRODUCTION OF MATTRESS COVER?
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES TO
WORK WITH YOU?
We all know that production
conditions have changed in many
countries. Logistics and supply are
now much more important than
the production phases. We do not
want our customers to waste time
with product design and R&D and
innovation processes. Therefore,
we started to manufacture sewn
products because we know we
will provide the best service. Let
our consumers focus only on their
earnings and have a happy sales
experience. This is what matters to
us. Our business partners supply
ready-made covers and meet their
fabric stock needs.
We offer our customers many alternatives
in design. Thus, our consumers
only need to decide. They
don’t need to worry about anything
else. We enable our customers to
get rid of labor and many machinery
investments too. We want our
customers to feel comfortable and
recommend that they leave the
sewn phases to us.
And last point and the most important
point is that our customers will
know the cost of each sewn. On
their own production they might
lose some points sometimes. You
know producing a mattress is not
a simple thing. They will have too
many inputs. Crunching the numbers
is a big deal sometimes. With
our products it will be much easier
to follow costs.
AS WE ALL KNOW PRODUCING
THESE TYPE OF PRODUCTS IS
REALLY A TOUGH JOB. HOW DO
YOU CONTROL YOUR QUALITY?
CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME MORE
ABOUT YOUR QUALITY CONTROL
PROCESSES?
It’s the cutting, trimming, sewing,
labeling; making design. it’s detailed
work and you have to be careful to
60 SleepTech • July - August

produce a cover. A zippered cover
is a lot more detailed to produce
than a regular mattress. We have
our checklist for each customer.
Nothing standard in our facility
about quality control. We also issue
a inspection report before loading.
So, the customers will know what
they will have. We think this will
makes our customer happy.
HOW DO YOU SUPPLY RAW
MATERIALS?
We act according to the wishes
of our customers in terms of raw
materials as in every other subject.
Wherever our customers direct
us, we move in that direction.
Therefore, our raw material supply
depends on our customer. Therefore,
whatever our customer wants,
we are there.
WHERE DO YOU EXPORT AND MAY I
KNOW YOUR PLAN FOR 2022?
As Night Comfort Bedding Turkey,
we are still a very new company.
We started our journey in the sector
with the target of 100% Export.
Although we are a new company,
we have now fully achieved our
target. We are very happy about
this situation and we managed to
satisfy our customers in a short
time. Our exports continue to European
countries such as Germany,
Belgium and the Netherlands, especially
United Kingdom and North
America. In 2022, we aim to further
expand these export channels. We
continue our work with great enthusiasm.
Therefore, we think that we
will easily reach our export target.
MAY I ASK YOU, WHY NIGHT
COMFORT BEDDING?
First of all, we guarantee our
partners with that they will get
what they have asked, on time. We
cannot offer like “we are providing
cheaper prices” but we can
guarantee them we are providing
best solution. We have wide design
range; shortly our design limited
with our customer imagination. We
also have FR solution too; we have
many ways to approach it. We give
our customers some new ideas
and help them develop great-looking
covers. That’s one of our
advantages. We also have invested
our machine lines to provide better
things to our customers. We are
able to produce high volume quilting
rolls, making flat and roll pack
packaging, thanks to new technology
machine lines.
FINALLY, WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST
GOALS IN THE INDUSTRY?
We, as Night Comfort Bedding,
have a very serious experience in
production. We know export very
well. Therefore, when our business
partners work with us, we guarantee
our export experience and
quality. We offer our customers the
most accurate product at the best
price. They have no doubts about
it. In addition, we are always in contact
with our customers due to the
products we produce. We have a
transparent and meticulous working
method. Our goal is to continue our
production under these conditions.
Our biggest goal is to offer the right
product and the best price. Thus,
we want to promote our products
to the whole world and continue
to be the supplier of the industry
leaders.
Profile
The environment is not a
burden, but an indispensable
value for Durak Tekstil
Durak Tekstil, who takes pioneering steps to reduce the environmental
footprint of the textile industry, succeeded in turning into an eco-friendly
and sustainable brand with its investments.
Durak Tekstil, the leading
manufacturer of industrial
sewing and embroidery
threads, celebrates World Environment
Day with its successful
efforts to become a more sustainable
textile business. Durak Tekstil,
taking concrete steps in numerous
areas from raw material procurement
to more efficient use of natural
resources and energy in the
production process, from choosing
renewable and recyclable resources
to investments in reducing the
footprint on the environment, has
created its strategic plans for the
coming period as a sustainable
and environmentalist company.
Durak Tekstil Board Member and
Marketing Director Yiğit Durak
reminded that World Environment
Day has been celebrated since the
United Nations Conference on the
Human Environment in 1972 in
order to create global awareness
and take action on the environment.
Durak stated that Durak
Tekstil has a history of 50 years
and is one of the first companies
to take initiative in the field of environment
and sustainability said;
“The use of resources, production
processes and supply chain and
the serious negative effects of the
textile industry on the environment
have been talked about for
years. Significant developments
have been achieved in increasing
awareness and consumer demands
in this regard. Durak Tekstil,
as one of the leading industrial
sewing and embroidery thread
manufacturers in the sector, has
been proving that a greener textile
production is possible for a long
time with the sustainability strategy
it has prepared and implemented.
We are aware that our environmental
initiatives, beyond creating
additional costs for us, increase
our brand value with the responsibility
we undertake.”
PRODUCTION WITH THE
ENVIRONMENT, ECO-FRIENDLY
PRODUCTION
Durak Tekstil, exporting to more
than 75 countries on 5 continents,
fulfills the sustainability criteria and
environmental conditions in its
facilities both in Turkey and China.
The company, founding an independent
Sustainability Committee
in house for these activities, not
only gains a more transparent
identity with the steps it takes, but
also creates more added value for
its customers’ final products.
Durak Tekstil has the International
Renewable Energy Certificate
(I-REC) as of 2021 and is a company
that uses 100% renewable
electrical energy in all its facilities.
Natural gas is another important
energy source in production for the
company. Durak Tekstil saves 100
thousand cubic meters of natural
gas annually thanks to its Waste
Water Energy Recovery Facility.
This corresponds to 25% of its
total natural gas consumption.
THE AMOUNT OF WATER REQUIRED
FOR PRODUCTION IS CONSTANTLY
BEING REDUCED
The most important point in the
protection of clean water resources
is to save water in industrial
production. Durak Tekstil uses
water intensively during the dyeing
phase in production and has
achieved a visible improvement
over the years with its investments.
The company used 50 liters of
water for 1 kg of thread dyeing
in 2015-16 and has managed to
reduce this amount to around 40
liters with its investments. Focusing
especially on increasing the
RFT (Right First Time) ratio in the
dyehouse, the company carries
forward its target of regularly
reducing the amount of water and
chemicals used in production.
Durak Tekstil, in addition to reducing
the amount of clean water
used, also made the necessary
environmental investments to
release the water into nature after
use. The company releases the
wastewater to the sewers after it
reaches the required pH value with
the Purification Plant and continues
its efforts to reuse the wastewater
in the dyehouse and other
production processes.
NO PLACE FOR DANGEROUS
SUBSTANCES IN PRODUCTION!
Durak Tekstil responds to the
safety demands of its customers
with certificates showing that its
production processes and products
meet the necessary safety
standards for human health and
the environment. The company,
which cooperates with authorized
licensed companies regarding the
wastes generated during and after
production, successfully meets
the criteria determined in the
process controlled by the Ministry
of Environment, Urbanization and
Climate Change. Durak Tekstil’s
3-year Waste Management Plan
was approved by the ministry and
the company received Zero Waste
Certificate in 2021. The Global
Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
certificate, which is of great importance
in terms of product safety
and consumer comfort, is among
the documents presented by
Durak Tekstil to its customers.
RECYCLING AND SUSTAINABILITY
INCREASE THEIR IMPORTANCE
Yiğit Durak, emphasizing that
Durak Tekstil has a corporate
vision focused on the environment
and sustainability, noted
that they have demonstrated this
commitment with the international
initiatives and contracts they have
recently participated in. Durak stated
that they obtained the Global
Recycling Standard (GRS) certificate
at the beginning of 2022 and
explained that they documented
their threads are produced from
suitable recycled raw materials. He
concluded his words as follows;
“We have implemented the end-toend
sustainability criteria. That is
why we reduce our environmental
impact by using recycled polyester
(rPET) in addition to using virgin
raw materials. The environmental
impact of this becomes more
obvious when considering that approximately
30 plastic bottles are
used to produce 1 kg of recycled
thread. The UN Global Compact,
which we joined in 2022, is
the world’s largest sustainability
initiative. Our roadmap for the
environment and sustainability has
already been prepared and we are
strengthening our eco-friendly production
with firm steps, and we will
continue to add value to our brand
with our sustainability efforts.”
Fair
Impulses for the future
living spaces
Climate protection and sustainable action in the manufacture of innovative products are
of central importance to consumers. With this way of thinking, interzum is embarking on
a new path by transforming from a content mover into a thought leader.
In 2023, interzum is once again
starting as the world’s leading
trade fair of the furniture supplier
and interior design industries! With
modern materials, outstanding
designs and exclusive innovations
in its luggage, the global industry
is once again meeting for a faceto-face
exchange in Cologne to
develop trends, find inspiration,
explore boundaries and design
the living spaces of tomorrow.
With its new claim of “shaping the
change”, interzum emphasises its
function as the provider of impulses
for the industry, with the goal of
redesigning the future together.
In the new way of thought of
interzum, leading trade fairs must
develop enormous power, extending
well beyond the presentation
of product innovations. They can
and must even more intensively
accentuate and discuss themes
that move society, like sustainability
and climate protection, and thus
advance the dialogue. In future, it
will become imperative for companies
to balance economic success
with social responsibility. Climate
protection and sustainable action
in the manufacture of innovative
products are of central importance
thinking, interzum is embarking on
a new path by transforming from
a content mover into a thought
leader.
In this sense, the defining and
guiding principle of interzum 2023
will be “new ecology”, because
climate change is not going to
disappear from the global consciousness,
and we are reminded
of this almost daily by, for example,
droughts, periods of extreme
heat or storms. Global societal
movements like Fridays for Future
are making sustainable action the
foundation of a new identity. Sustainability
is a growing economic
factor. Themes like conserving
resources, smart materials, renewable
energies, re- and upcycling,
etc. are already tracing a development
leading toward many brand
companies seeing their future
home less in a particular assort-
ment than in an attitude. The trade
fair in the coming year will offer
exhibitors and visitors of interzum
precisely the platform and community
that discusses these themes
and develops solutions together.
Even though interzum is redefining
its lead claim, the focus will also
still remain on global business under
changed basic conditions. This
is evidenced by an exhibitor diversity
that is so unique worldwide,
extending from Hettich, Häfele,
Schattdecor, Impress, Egger, Finsa,
Kastamonu, Leggett & Platt /
among others. In this way, interzum
2023 creates a good foundation
for carrying on from the good
2019 event. With around 190,000
m² of exhibition area, the trade
fair at that time proved to be the
world’s largest display window for
surfaces, fittings, light and wood
materials, as well as components
for the production of upholstered
furniture. The event was also able
to considerably expand its international
reach in terms of both
exhibitors and visitors.
Kırayteks:
We have a very large collection
offering customized solutions for
every need
Onur Kırayoğlu, Board Member of Kırayteks, spoke to Sleeptech magazine before
the Sleep Expo Middle East Fair.
Kırayoğlu, in the interview with
the editor of Sleeptech magazine
Furkan Akar, stated that he
predicts that the Sleep Expo Middle
East Fair will have positive effects,
directly or indirectly, on both the world
and the Turkish mattress industry.
Kırayoğlu expressed that they hope to
increase their awareness in the region
and to carry their sales to wider points
with the fair.
HOW DO YOU EXPECT THE SLEEP
EXPO MIDDLE EAST FAIR, WHICH
WILL BE HELD FOR THE 3RD TIME
THIS YEAR, TO HAVE AN INFLUENCE
ON THE TURKISH MATTRESS
SECTOR?
As it is known, the Middle East and
especially the Arab region have made
big developments in tourism in recent
years. This growth, which the centers
such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Jeddah
and Qatar led, had very positive results
for the Turkish furniture, mattress and
home textile industries. However, that
the pandemic process has lasted for
the last 2 years, and that the travel to
these regions is limited have caused
new and ongoing projects to slow
down and thus the commercial volume
to shrink.
In these days when we start to return
to the old normal days, the volume the
lodging industry will bring especially
with the revival of tourism, will give
speed to the Turkish mattress industry
again. This fair will bring together
important producers and tourism
professionals for the region at the right
time and at the same point. I think the
results will be positive for our sector.
WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS
FROM THE SLEEP EXPO MIDDLE
EAST FAIR AS A FIRM?
We have a very large collection that
offers special solutions for all kinds of
uses and needs. With this fair, we will
have the chance to introduce our new
collections to our current customers
who have not had the chance to visit
us for a long time, and to all other
companies we will meet. First of all, we
hope to increase our awareness in the
region and to carry our sales to wider
points.
AFTER THE FAIR, WHAT KIND OF
AN INFLUENCE DO YOU EXPECT
TURKISH COMPANIES TO HAVE
IN THE MIDDLE EAST MARKET,
ESPECIALLY IN THE UAE?
Undoubtedly, Turkish companies have
a large share in the trade of textiles
and by-products in the region. All the
design and functional innovations in
the sector directly contribute to the
development of the region. As a result
of this fair, we can see that all the
innovations introduced to the market
started to be used in the region in a
short time.
STEEL WIRE & SPRING UNITS
Thanks to their superior sleep and
enhanced sitting comfort, the use
of Pocket Springs has lately been
on the rise. Pocket springs are
individually wrapped in non-woven
pockets and have independent
movement feature. Pocket springs
are available in barrel, cylinder or
other shapes to accommodate the
requested comfort. By using wires
with varying dimensions Boyçelik
is able to produce zoned pocket
spring units for enhanced regional
support.
Micro pocket springs support the
body at every point of contact
thereby providing an even more luxurious
sleep. Micro pocket spring
system is quickly becoming one of
the most preferred spring systems
by mattress manufacturers and are
available in zone. The narrow spring
diameter allows more springs per
m² while the special honeycomb
arrangement makes better use of
space, both features that distinguish
the micro pocket spring from
other spring systems.
The Bonnell or open coil spring unit
is the cheapest and most ineffective
support unit you can get in a
mattress. It is a continuous piece
of wire that is twisted and coiled
to create a massive set of joined
crude springs. This results in a ‘one
size spring’ of sorts, which moves
as a mass piece.
Mattress, furniture, textile, automotive
and industrial spring manufacture
can choose from a wide
array of steel wire ranging from
1,20 mm to 5,00 mm diameter.
Manufacturing rolls that can vary
from 100 kg to 900 kg, and made
to meet required quality specifications.
Products are shipped with
core cardboard, steel strapped and
covered with special material to
protect from unfavorable external
conditions.
FELT
It is a filling material used in bed,
sofa, automotive and insulation industry.
It is produced using carding
machine, Cross Lapper, needling
and thermobond technology. These
technologies provide the desired
quality and strength.
Felts have extensive use in the
manufacturing of mattresses. They
are used to keep foam in its intact
position and work as a protective
material. In layered mattresses,
multiple felts are layered. The top
layer of felt always provides protection
to the mattresses.
The most traditional form of mattress
adhesives are solvent based
systems. These systems provide
strong bonds, generally stronger
than water-based mattress glues.
They can be applied by roll coating,
spray or beads and dots.
HOT MELT GLUE
The newest, and most efficient
mattress adhesive on the market is
hot melt which is applied with hot
air and sets as the heat dissipates.
Hot melt is the mattress glue with
the fastest curing process and least
risks as it involves neither solvents
nor water thanks to its 100% solid
consistency.
SLEEP DISPLAY SYSTEMS:
WHY TO PREFER MATTRESS
DISPLAY SYSTEM?
- Enables you to display more mattresses
in your stores.
- Enables you to get higher profit by
enabling you to offer more choices
to your customers.
- Capability of production for any
size mattress.
- Capability of quick mattress
switching.
- Minimum ground usage.
- Capability of lowering and lifting
with extreme ease.
- Enables you to display 3-10
mattresses within space of 1 queen
mattress.
Şen, stating that they have
been making fiber production
for 22 years and non-woven
production for 2 years in the interview
he gave to our editor Furkan
production capacity of the firm;
“For now, we have a monthly
production of more than 1000 tons
of PP Spunbond. Furthermore, we
are also producing elastic films and
meltblown used in many different
sectors. With these productions,
we have a monthly capacity of
1150-1200 tons.” Mr. Sedat, also
shared with us the vision they
developed for the coming years as
a firm, said on the topic “As one
of our main goals is to take part in
sustainable work and projects having
continuity as long-termed, we
experience the decreases, which
almost all producers experienced,
our growth and investments, to
As Microfiber firm, we have been
operating in the fiber sector since
2000. We are representing global
firms, accepted all over the world,
in Turkey. Although we directly
serve different sectors, we can
mention the success in question
due to our customer-oriented
work, which is taking part at the
top of our main principles. We
started non-woven production in
our factory in Kilis in August 2020
by keeping the same habits. We,
beginning from every stage of our
production, are working as customer-oriented
both in sales and
after Starting. We are taking as
principle to be solution partner of
the firms we work with, rather than
seeing them as customers. We
set out with an expert staff in the
field from the first day we started
production. Although our firm is
young, we have been working
with personnel who have proven
themselves in the sector for many
years. Thus, whatever the needs
of our customers’ own sectors, we
are managing a special process
from order to delivery for each
customer. This is naturally one of
basic factors, bringing success
and sustainability.
YOU HAVE A MONTHLY PRODUCTION
CAPACITY OF 1000 TONS AS OF THE
MOMENT. CAN YOU MENTION YOUR
TARGETS OF 2023 REGARDING THIS
ISSUE?
For now, we have a monthly production
of more than 1000 tons of
PP Spunbond. Furthermore, we
are also producing elastic films and
meltblown used in many different
sectors. With these productions,
we have a monthly capacity of
1150-1200 tons. As it is known,
the pandemic process, which negatively
affected the whole world,
has taken the non-woven sector to
a different place positively due to
the demand for disposable products.
Many investments have been
made in this sector in our country
and all over the world, and naturally
there has been a significant
increase in production capacity. As
Microfiber, we have never targeted
work intensity, covering certain periods,
as in the pandemic. As one
of our main goals is to take part in
sustainable work and projects having
continuity as long-termed, we
experience the decreases, which
almost all producers experienced,
at a minimum level. In the coming
YOU PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT TO
DOZENS OF PEOPLE IN YOUR
FACTORY IN GAZIANTEP AND KILIS.
WILL YOU HAVE INVESTMENTS
IN OTHER PARTS OF TURKEY OR
ABROAD? WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS
ON THIS TOPIC?
Our headquarters is in Gaziantep.
As I mentioned, we also have a
non-woven factory built on 17.000
m² in Kilis. We also have warehouses
in various cities in order to
provide better and faster service to
our customers. We currently have
the necessary infrastructure to
best respond to customer demands.
We are constantly considering
and evaluating new investments.
But, we prefer taking first
step within the scope of possible
demands and opportunities that
will coincide with our principles. I
would like you to know that we will
share all possible developments
with you.
CAN YOU BRIEFLY MENTION YOUR
EXPORT RANGE? DO YOU HAVE NEW
MARKET TARGETS ON THIS TOPIC?
IF YES, WHICH MARKETS ARE YOU
TARGETING?
Exports we did to Europe comprise
half of our sales. We also
export all the main items that we
produce. We are acting in the
companies we export in the same
way as we behave in our relations
with our domestic customers. As
we act in the firms, we export to,
same as we act in the relationships
with our customers at home, within
the framework of a sustainable
partnership. As I have mentioned
before, that we have dominate
tendency to have the dynamics of
the sectors we serve, which is one
of the main features, distinguishing
us from other companies, is more,
we actually are in all markets that
we target. What we need to do
next will be to ensure the continuity
of our existence and increase our
share in the markets we are in. For
now, our main work is progressing
in this direction. Of course, by the
way, our research for new markets
and sectors is continuing
WHICH FAIRS DO YOU PLAN TO
ATTEND IN THE COMING TERM?
CAN WE GET YOUR THOUGHTS ON
THE EFFECT OF THE FAIRS ON THE
SECTOR?
First of all, we will participate in
IBİA EXPO 2022 at Istanbul IFC in
October. We believe that it will be
a very good fair for the mattress
components sector, where we are
also influential and want to develop
further. Afterwards, we plan
to participate in fairs, proven their
effectiveness in the field, including
the markets we are targeting. I
think that fairs generally contribute
positively to the sectors and
make an opportunity to meet with
your business environment. Today,
that the firms have strong representation
ability and network it is
now one of the basic conditions.
I believe that a right fair will also
strengthen the participating firms
on these topics.
Dellsa Kimya’s company owners, Samed Altıntaş and Egemen Toprak shared the future
goals and mission of their newly established company with Sleeptech magazine.
Altıntaş and Toprak, explaining
many topics from the production
fair organizations to short, medium,
and long-term plans, gave the following
statements by talking about
his long-term plans; in the interview
with our magazine editor, Furkan
Akar; “In the long run, the main
goal is to provide services, to offer
products, to make connections and
sales points in every country and on
every continent. For that purpose,
Dellsa Kimya has been taking firm
steps towards realizing all of its
goals, step by step since the day it
was founded.
Dellsa Kimya’s company owner,
Samed Altıntaş shared the future
goals and mission of his newly established
company with Sleeptech
magazine
AS A NEWLY ESTABLISHED
COMPANY, CAN YOU TALK ABOUT
THE ROLE YOU HAVE CHOSEN FOR
YOURSELF IN THE SECTOR AND THE
ROAD MAP YOU WILL FOLLOW?
DELLSA KİMYA provides services
to the sector as a company that
aims to gain customer satisfaction
and appreciation by producing the
highest quality at the most affordable
price and to make its name
and quality felt in the shortest time
possible both in Turkey and in the
global market with the innovation
and new sales techniques it will
create.
DELLSA KİMYA and APEX brand
were established by the members
of the board of directors who have
experience in the manufacture
and marketing of adhesives used
in the field of furniture (upholstery,
sofa, spring mattress, office furniture…).
In this context, DELLSA
KİMYA, aiming to be the leader in
its sector, produces flammable or
non-flammable adhesives that can
be applied with a gun or brush and
used in areas such as soft furniture,
office furniture, shoes, construction,
insulation, and automotive.
It plans to export its adhesives to
Europe, the Middle East, the United
States, and other world countries,
and to take place in
the domestic market
and national economy
with its name and
quality.
WHAT KIND OF
PORTFOLIO DO YOU
INTEND TO CREATE
IN THE PRODUCTION
LINE?
A fast and safe
automation system
has started to be
established in the
production line that
will help the development
of the sector. In
this context, our first
102 SleepTech • July - August

priority in the production line has
been determined as the health and
safety of our personnel.
In terms of product options, we
want to be a company that offers
different options to our customers
by offering an unusual product
range. The feedback we have received
so far encourages us in this
regard. Unlike a standard adhesive,
we entered the market with product
options that will make our users
and vendors feel the APEX quality
at the first moment.
HOW DO YOU PLAN TO FOLLOW
AN EXPORT PATH? ARE THERE
ANY COUNTRIES THAT ARE YOUR
PRIMARY TARGET IN THIS REGARD?
As it can be understood from the
title of our company, the main
target is to have a say in the world
market, exporting. In this context,
it has taken its first steps globally
by opening an office in Istanbul
and the United States of America/
Miami.
In addition, Dellsa Kimya currently
exports directly to 30 countries.
The first real target is to be able to
export to 60 countries at the end
of the year. As I mentioned above,
Dellsa Kimya continues its efforts to
trade with all countries of the world
from Ankara, the capital of our
country, in order to provide service,
offer products, and establish
connections and sales points in all
continents, starting with the United
States of America, the Americas
and the European Continent, the
Middle East and North Africa…
WILL YOU PARTICIPATE IN THE
FAIRS THAT ARE PLANNED TO BE
ORGANIZED AT HOME AND ABROAD?
HOW IMPORTANT ARE FAIRS FOR
YOU?
Our board of directors and sales
team, who are experienced in fairs,
follow the activities planned for the
sector in the country and abroad.
It is an undoubted fact that the
fairs contribute to the acquisition
of a new customer portfolio and
the development of the personnel
in the field of sales and marketing.
For this purpose, it plans to take
part in all fairs such as a mattress,
furniture, and furniture sub-industry
around the world, which are important
in the name of the sector, even
as a visitor, if not as a participant.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR
SHORT, MEDIUM, AND LONG-
TERM PLANS AND GOALS FOR THE
FUTURE?
As Dellsa Kimya, in the short term,
the needs in the sector were first
identified and a valuable and experienced
staff was formed in the
field of sales and marketing. Pilot
and virgin sales areas were determined,
and the sales and marketing
potential in the target regions were
evaluated. In the medium term,
expanding the customer portfolio
and finding new markets has been
determined as the first target. In
this context, the urgency was given
to the planning and realization of
the sales team’s visits to Turkey and
abroad.
In the long run; The main goal is to
provide services, offer products,
and create connections and sales
points in every country and continent.
To this end, Dellsa Kimya has
been taking firm steps towards realizing
all of its goals, step by step,
since the day it was founded.
Our firm, as Ümit Makina,
which has been exporting
countries for 35 years in Turkish
mattress production machineries
technology, with package spring
machines, bonnell spring machines,
edge closing machines,
glue machines, packaging machines
series in the range of mattress
production machines, have
different excitedly attended the
fair for the second time this year.
Due to the compulsory two-year
Covid-19 break after the first year,
the fair has been more active and
exciting for both participants and
visitors this year. From the point
of Ümit Makina, that we exhibited
at the same platform with Atlanta
Attachment, which we continue to
carry out projects in the USA market
due to our joint venture agreement,
an also our partner Hari
Chand Anand & Co, with whom
we continue to work together in
the Indian market, has caused different
excitement for both us and
our visitors at the fair this year. The
power, the cooperation of Ümit
Makina, Atlanta Attachment and
HCA exhibited at the fair, has given
the visitors, having potential to buy,
opportunity to reach more varieties
under the same roof in terms of
mattress technologies. In addition
to this, that the success of all 3
companies in their local areas and
the power combination of the trust
they have gained in the world has
been declared together with this
fair has pretty affected our show
area to become the star of the fair.
Considering that the visitors of the
fair are generally from the Indian
mattress manufacturers, Ümit
Makina, as a Turkish company,
took its place in the most visited
booth position at the fair with the
confidence of the spare parts and
service, which Hari Chand Anand
has been giving at 10 different
points in India since 1910. If that
the decision to buy the machine
is formalized is considered as a
merger agreement that we have
signed that our communication
with the company from which we
bought the machine will continue
108 SleepTech • July - August

for years, the presence of HCA has
been an association that made the
Indian manufacturers feel extremely
safe about service and spare
parts. The Mattress Machinery
Technology and Innovation Center,
which will be implemented in Bangalore,
will reach a potential that
can again respond to all the needs
of India about mattress machinery
technologies.
Before coming to the India Fair, we
had gathered our work under three
separate headings. They are our
concluded agreements, pending
agreements, agreed meetings and
new acquaintances. The fairs are
an investment, results of which are
generally obtained in the months
following the fair process. The
difference of the India Fair for us
was that the long-term sales had
reached a conclusion during the
fair. Therefore, in a short time, we
exceeded our targets and concluded
the fair. This success of
Ümit Makina, Atlanta Attachment
and HCA was the unity of power
we exhibited at the fair. The
journey we embarked on with the
slogan IT IS BETTER TOGETHER
brought us a success far above
our target in India.
We attended the fair with a very
crowded team. Our team, with
its highly dynamic appearance,
allowed new and planned visitors
to spend a long time at our stand
and receive satisfactory information
about their needs. This was
a situation that strengthened our
triple partnership and made us feel
that we were on the right way.
Rather than bringing together
various brands of the world and
enabling potential customers to
save time and see all the materials
relevant to the sector together, the
fair actually enabled us, the participants,
to know each other better.
As participants representing the
same country, we had the opportunity
to come together and gather
thanks to the environment the fair
organization provided. For this reason,
on behalf of Ümit Makina and
its partners, we would like to thank
the India Fair Organization for
contributing to us in the commercial
sense and enabling us to sign
new agreements, and allowing the
leading companies of the sector to
know each other better.
Latest housing data from China
shows that in the past three years,
sale of the country’s commercial
housing has increased by as much
as 15 times by area compared
with the previous ten years. By
2030, 70.6 per cent of China will
be urbanized, with urban population
estimated to increase by
another 200 million.
Home ownership for the 20 to
50-year-old segment is expected
to enter a stage of moderate-speed
and high-quality growth.
With surging per capita income
and shrinking family size, future
housing area is set to jump by 20
per cent.
This has also given birth to the
rapid development of whole-house
customization, system doors and
windows, as well as soft furnishings.
Three major industries in
China - home furnishing, building
materials and home improvement
– are poised enter a golden age.
Currently, the country accounts for
25 per cent of the world’s furniture
production capacity. It is also the
world’s leading furniture producer,
consumer and exporter, hence
attracting companies from all over
the world to tap into this burgeoning
market.
CIFM / interzum guangzhou 2022
will be held in the namesake
city, concurrently with the China
over 2,100 exhibitors, international
companies from more than 30
countries and regions will be injecting
a host of product varieties.
LAUNCHPAD FOR QUALITY
ACCESSORIES
Whole-house customization is the
current trend in the home furnishing
industry, and consumers are
more willing to choose brands with
high quality products, convenient
applications, and an immersive
shopping experience.
It is worth noting that all leading
furniture brands publicly listed in
the country position themselves
as premium, intelligent as well as
health- and experience-oriented.
Such companies are, undoubtedly,
more discerning when selecting
accessory suppliers.
DIVERSIFIED ACTIVITIES MEET
TRADE OPPORTUNITIES
Practicality and price are two
factors that consumers value in the
furniture market, while technology,
convenience and comfort are key
demands. Therefore, hardware accessories
and components need
to be more flexible and diverse.
In addition, there is increasing
necessity for upholstered furniture
makers to focus on the research
and development and application
of recycled materials, which meet
degradability and recyclability
requirements.
At the same time, the development
of adhesives, coatings and
chemical raw materials is moving
towards higher quality and improved
standards.
As for wood products and panels,
affected by factors such as rising
prices of raw materials, enterprises
need considerable investment and
innovative technologies to achieve
sustainable solutions. Woodworking
machinery is gradually moving
from designing products and
production lines to a higher level of
designing the entire factory. Equipment
needs to be more flexible
to meet the needs of customized
furniture production, and intelligent
manufacturing is an inevitable
trend in the Industry 4.0 era.
Only products that focus on
sustainability, low cost, practicality
and aesthetic living can fully meet
the needs of the market. This has
raised the bar for new material development,
innovative technology
applications, product design and
functional research and development.
The VSIL Forum revolving around
the theme “Vitality of Sustainable
Atlas Mattress
We do not see our customers as
numerical data
Atlas Mattress Company Owner Ali Can Karaca made statements on many topics from
production to export, from commercial vision to marketing tactics.
Karaca, speaking to Furkan
Akar, the editor of Sleeptech
magazine, stated that the
main purpose of them as the firm
is to gather all the textile products
needed by the mattress manufacturers
and to provide the products
requested according to their needs
in the most right way. Mr. Ali Can,
stating that they use social networks
well by following the latest
developments in terms of marketing
tactics, is in favor of keeping a traditional
attitude in the sales process.
Mr. Ali Can said the following
while talking about the policy they
follow on customer satisfaction;
Atlas Textile does not consider
its customers as numerical data.
This is a rule bored through me at
Boyteks. The customer is always
right. Our priority is for customers
to get the right product at the
right price. As a working principle,
we prefer losing money to losing
customer satisfaction. We prefer to
act as a partner of the companies
we work with instead of being a
supplier.
AS A YOUNG AND DYNAMIC FIRM,
CAN YOU MENTION YOUR FOUNDING
STORY, YOUR VISION FOR THE
FUTURE AND THE MISSION YOU
HAVE UNDERTAKEN?
As you mentioned, Atlas Textile
is a very new firm but it was an
idea that I had planned for many
years. In 2018, I decided to leave
Boyteks, where I worked for many
years. Then I worked as a partner
in a different firm for 1.5 years. But,
as I could not fully carry out my
own ideas and commercial principles,
I decided to leave this firm
and establish Atlas Textile firm. The
aim of Atlas Textile is to ensure a
mattress manufacturer to be able
to reach all kinds of textile products
under one roof. Our aim is to
provide the products requested by
the manufacturers in the most right
way. I think this diversity makes us
different from many well-established
and powerful firms. When you pay
attention to our firm logo, we try to
reflect this diversity with a colorful
firm image.
The future we have planned for
our firm is actually a bit difficult
and extraordinary. However, when
we consider the conditions of the
developing and changing world day
by day, I believe that this transformation
is inevitable. The plan of
Atlas Textile firm for the next years
is to be a 100% e-commerce site.
We are currently trying to lay the
foundations for this process. Slowly
but surely, we plan to transform the
face of our firm into a completely
digital one.
YOU MANUFACTURE MANY
PRODUCTS RELATED TO THE
MATTRESS SECTOR. CAN YOU
MENTION YOUR PRODUCT RANGE
AND PRODUCTION CAPACITY?
It is necessary to correct a mistake
here. We are a textile firm.
At the points outside of our fabric
production (other accessories and
components), we only carry out
a commercial activity. The reason
that our customers prefer us at this
point is our capacity to consolidate
and offer many different products
for themselves with minimum order
quantities. We have the opportunity
to deliver dozens of different
products to our customers under a
single sale.
CAN YOU MENTION THE COUNTRIES
YOUR FIRM EXPORTS TO AND THE
POLICIES YOU FOLLOW IN SEARCH
OF NEW MARKETS?
Atlas Textile is a firm currently providing
services to nearby markets.
I have tried to show the regions we
serve in order of density below.
• European Region
• North Africa
• Middle East
• East Africa
• Turkey
Our plan in the next years is to try
to serve regions with remote market
status as well. But at this point, I’m
a bit of a fan of the old-fashioned
way of working. Before entering
a market, I prefer to have knowledge
and experience about that
market. For that reason, our work
is progressing a little slowly. Our
goal in the next years is to continue
our sales activities, especially
in the America continent. In this
process, our idea and plan to move
the headquarters of our firm is in
question.
128 SleepTech • July - August

CAN YOU MENTION THE POLICIES
(ADVERTISING AND CUSTOMER
RELATIONS) YOU FOLLOW FOR THE
SALE OF YOUR PRODUCTS?
Atlas Textile does not see its customers
as numerical data. This is a
rule bored through me at Boyteks.
The customer is always right. Our
priority is for customers to get the
right product at the right price. As a
working principle, we prefer losing
money to losing customer satisfaction.
We prefer to act as a partner
of the companies we work with
instead of being a supplier.
Atlas Textile uses social media
arguments a lot. We make tiny
distinctions about this topic. In the
next period, we want to support
our social media arguments with
Google ads. However, my culture
is still a bit old. I certainly don’t find
it logical to trade without meeting
with a customer face to face. The
most important sales strategy for
us is the customer visit.
HOW DO YOU EVALUATE THE
CURRENT SITUATION OF TURKEY
IN THE MATTRESS COMPONENTS
INDUSTRY?
Actually, our country is very successful
both in the production of
mattresses as a finished product
and in its components. It is very
successful both in terms of production
technique and capacity.
But, there are very few firms having
brand value in the mattress sector
in our country. In our country, both
raw materials and finished products
are being offered for sale without a
brand value in this sector. Except
for some major firms, the manufacturers
do not focus on this issue or
do not make moves to differentiate
themselves.
In the current situation I guess is
that the continuation of export
sales, which will become more
difficult in the future, is to differentiate
and become a brand in my
opinion. Unfortunately, our country
is a country where energy is very
expensive. Machineries and production
technologies are developing
day by day. Cheap labor costs
are losing their importance day by
day. This is not just for the mattress
industry; it is the same for every
industry.
Sleep Number unveils new
research from Its 360 ® Smart
Bed on temperature sensing and
daytime alertness
Temperature study revealed at SLEEP 2022 demonstrates ability to unobtrusively
measure body temperature during sleep. Daytime alertness study shows potential of
the 360 smart bed to predict alertness trends in large populations under real-world
conditions.
Sleep Number Corporation
(Nasdaq: SNBR), the sleep
health, science, and research
leader, today announces
new data from its 360 smart bed
at SLEEP 2022, the 36th annual
meeting of the Associated Professional
Sleep Societies, LLC from
June 4-8 in Charlotte, NC. Data
presented showed results of a
study to measure skin temperature
using sensors to be deployed in
360 smart beds, and a study to
measure daytime alertness using
Sleep Number’s proprietary Sleep-
IQ® technology, which is embedded
in every 360 smart bed.
Temperature meaningfully impacts
sleep quality, and alertness is an
indicator of sleep’s impact on daytime
performance. These studies
further demonstrate Sleep Number’s
ability to provide unparalleled
quality sleep, as well as the 360
smart bed’s potential research capabilities
to accurately assess and
monitor sleep using non-invasive,
longitudinal methodology. To date,
Sleep Number has leveraged and
learned from over 15 billion hours of
sleep data gathered from over 1.8
billion real-world sleep sessions.
UNOBTRUSIVE SENSING OF SKIN
TEMPERATURE DURING SLEEP
USING A MATTRESS SENSOR
Body and ambient temperature significantly
influence sleep patterns,
both in falling asleep and staying
asleep. As the body prepares for
sleep, temperature increases in
distal (hands and feet) and proximal
(abdomen) areas, while core body
temperature decreases. The ratio
of distal to proximal temperature
can be highly predictive of sleep
onset, which can offer insight into
one’s sleep quality. However, there
are few devices that can measure
these temperatures unobtrusively.
Sleep Number’s study sought to
unobtrusively estimate distal skin
temperature during sleep using a
130 SleepTech • July - August

temperature sensor array on a bed.
Three participants’ skin temperatures
were measured using
five equally spaced temperature
sensors set laterally across the
bed to align with the torso. Sleep
Number compared their distal skin
temperature data to that of a research-grade,
FDA-approved smart
watch and then used the sleep
data from the 360 smart bed to
build predictive models estimating
distal skin temperature.
Results of the study showed that
a temperature sensor system,
coupled with an optimized decision-tree
model to predict distal
skin temperature for each minute,
can predict a mean distal sleep
temperature for each sleep session
with reasonable accuracy. This
study also showed the 360 smart
bed platform with the sensor array
enabled unobtrusive, real-world collection
of distal skin temperatures
during sleep and may be useful for
future studies measuring overnight
temperature.
“The research we’re presenting
at SLEEP 2022 demonstrates
our commitment to our mission,
to improve lives by individualizing
sleep experiences,” said Annie
Bloomquist, Chief Innovation
Officer, Sleep Number. “Today, our
360 smart beds measure daytime
alertness, which affects health and
productivity. Soon, they will feature
a sensor array to detect temperature,
which is a challenge for many
adults. By advancing the 360 smart
bed to monitor sleep and health
barriers, we are paving the way
for sleepers to not only get higher
quality sleep, but potentially detect
health issues and improve holistic
health from the comfort of their own
home.”
DAYTIME ALERTNESS
QUANTIFICATION AND MODELLING:
RESULTS FROM A LARGE
OBSERVATIONAL STUDY
Poor quality sleep is associated
with a broad range of health risks
such as chronic illnesses, impaired
vigilance and cognitive issues,
including alertness. Understanding
and predicting alertness trends
throughout the day can better
inform daytime performance.
Previously, the two-process model
(TPM) of sleep regulation combining
sleep homeostasis and circadian
rhythm has been used to derive a
daytime alertness curve. The TPM
model has been used to model
the effects of sleep deprivation on
memory, circadian misalignment,
temperature regulation and brain
function; however, the TPM-derived
alertness curve comes largely from
small-scale, controlled studies.
Sleep Number’s study showed that
a similar, three-parameter alertness
measure, which included sleep
homeostasis, circadian rhythm and
self-rated alertness responses from
360 smart bed sleepers can scale
to a large group of people under
real-world conditions. Human sleep
is regulated by two components:
sleep homeostasis and circadian
rhythms. Sleep homeostasis, or
pressure to sleep, builds up in the
body as time awake increases and
decreases during sleep. Circadian
rhythms are natural, internal cycles
of biological and behavioral processes
that rise and fall across the
24-hour day. Circadian rhythms
promote sleepiness before usual
Sleep Number 360 smart bed
sleepers rated their subjective
alertness on a scale from one to
10 through the SleepIQ technology
app. The data was analyzed by age
group (18-40, 41-65 and 66-90)
and compared to a three-parameter
version of the TPM-derived
alertness curve. In total, more than
65,500 sleep sessions were gathered
over 95 days.
The study showed that:
• Overall, subjective alertness
followed a similar trend to previous
studies: mean hourly alertness
increased in the morning, dipped
slightly in the afternoon, increased
during the evening and decreased
again during the night. Unlike previous
studies, however, this study
saw a greater increase in alertness
from the afternoon to evening.
• Based upon the demographic
makeup of the sleeper population,
Sleep Number was also able
to analyze hourly trends in mean
alertness scores by age group.
Younger sleepers had the most
stable alertness scores throughout
the day, but lower levels of
alertness compared to older age
groups. In contrast, middle-aged
and older sleepers had higher levels
of alertness, but their score varied
more widely throughout the day
compared to younger sleepers.
• These results show that TPM-derived
alertness can effectively predict
daily alertness trends in a large
group of people under real-world
conditions.
Quality sleep is associated with
overall health and wellbeing, which
is why all Sleep Number 360 smart
beds are informed by the RU-SAT-
ED model, six scientific factors
proven by Dr. Dan Buysse, Professor
of Psychiatry and Clinical and
Translational Science, University of
Pittsburgh, to provide quality sleep:
Regularity, Satisfaction, Alertness,
Timing, Duration and Efficiency.
“Last year, in listening to our
sleepers’ feedback, we released
My Daytime Alertness, a feature
that provides advanced, real-time
insights that pair each sleeper’s
personal sleep data with self-reported
information and sleep
science,” said Rajasi Mills, VP of
SleepIQ Health and Research,
Sleep Number. “My Daytime Alertness’
data-driven insights – along
with our other features, such as
My Sleep Health and effortless
adjustability - are helping individuals
improve their overall sleep health
and wellbeing.”
Recently, Sleep Number also
announced publication of another
new study in the journal Sensors,
showing that SleepIQ technology
– found inside each Sleep Number
360 smart bed - demonstrated
strong correlations in measuring
sleep data compared to traditional
laboratory PSG, the current gold
standard of measuring sleep.
