Practical aspects of the determination, maintenance and reconstruction
of the continuity of fluvial ecological corridors
Marek JELONEK
Summary
Fluvial ecological corridors are migration routes for an enormous number of water and terrestrial
organisms enabling these organisms to complete their life cycles and ensuring connectivity between
populations and dispersion of genes. The article deliberately narrows a problem of fluvial corridors
down to an issue of biological connectivity of river and stream beds, i.e. to a water part of these
corridors. Typology of fluvial corridors as regards water organisms which use them has been
discussed with special attention paid to fish fauna. Also, the barrier structures have been defined and
their adverse influence on water organisms and ecological condition of waters has been identified.
General principles for the demarcation and functioning of fluvial corridors have been provided
together with the methods of the restoration and maintenance of two-way continuity of the corridors
(up and down the river) through characterization of the most common devices enabling migration (e.g.
rapids-type structures) and devices used for the migration of water organisms (e.g. fish passes).
