Vojska SHS – kraljevine Jugoslavije(1919–1941)Vojaki – rekruti so vojaško prisego izrekaliskupinsko, v postroju (po verski pripadnosti),pred duhovniki vseh verskih skupnosti (MileBjelajac, Vojska SHS/Jugoslavije, Beograd,1994 –fotografija iz Sarajeva, 1928, podčastniškašola – razvrstitev gojencev po verskipripadnosti: pravoslavci, katoliki, judje inwho were returning to their homes via Maribor(Šentilj) and had to be held in Maribor for sometime (more important than the oath was payment,as patriotic speeches were out of the question); andthe third group, mobilised soldiers from Styria, deployedto Maribor and Celje regiments as well asother units, who were immediately leaving for theCarinthian Front. Maribor Infantry Regiment thustook the oath to the Slovenian homeland and theircommanders, before God, standing on parade, on 21November 1918 at 11:30.Insurgents of the Secret PatrioticOrganisation in the Primorska Region(Slovenian Littoral) – TIGR (1925–1941)Mira Cencič, author of the book TIGR (Ljubljana,1997) mentions, on page 91, one of the first oathstaken by members of the illegal patriotic organisationTIGR around 1925. The words to the oath werethe following:“On my honour and the honour of my family, Iswear before God to do everything in my powerto free Venezia Giulia which must be annexed toYugoslavia”.Later, in the autumn of 1930, after the invasionof the fascist police and the first death sentences oforganisation members, the leaders adopted a veryshort oath for all novices:“Better death than treason!”Today it is also a historical fact that members ofthe TIGR organisation – Danilo Zelen and others –were among the first partisan fighters, members ofthe People’s Liberation Army of Slovenia. Most TIGRmembers fell into British captivity and then joinedvarious intelligence and sabotage groups of paratroopersas well as Yugoslav Army units outside thehomeland, which partisans considered treason. Thenumber of TIGR members is unknown.Volunteers in the Spanish Republican Army(1936–1939)Based on the statements of some Spanish volunteersit is possible to conclude that they had to signlists below an oath written in the Spanish language;however, where there were homogeneous nationalunits (Slovenian Ivan Cankar and Matija Gubec companies),commanders also implemented a public oath142 • V O J A Š K A Z G O D O V I N A
