Dr. Stanko Kociper, osebni tajnik in zet divizijskegagenerala Leona Rupnika, generalnegainšpektorja Slovenskega domobranstva, jev svoji knjigi (Kar sem živel, Ljubljana, 1996,str. Po mojem mnenju je glavni poudarekv delu, ki govori, da so domobranci (pomožni)In accordance with the articles of the military codeand in line with the military laws, we will alwaysbehave as strong soldiers and good patriots andthus live and die honestly. So God help us. Amen!”Slovenian Home Guard (1941–1945)Members of the Slovenian Home Guard actuallyswore to Hitler twice! As this oath has already beenpoliticised to a great extent, I will only add severalless known details.Dr. Stanko Kociper, personal secretary and son-inlawof the Division General Leon Rupnik, InspectorGeneral of the Slovenian Home Guard, wrote in hisbook (Kar sem živel, Ljubljana, 1996, pp. 189–197, inthe chapter titled In iz ozadja) that the initiative forthe Home Guard oath came from the OrganisationalStaff (Commander Lieutenant Colonel Krener orLieutenant Colonel Ernest Peterlin who often visitedSS General Erwin Rösener) and that General Rupnikin fact softened the entire text of the oath composed bySS General Rösener and later only added the part ofthe sentence saying “ ... against communists and theirallies”. Rupnik’s son, Captain Vuk, was against anyoath given to the Germans – officers were still boundby the oath given to the Yugoslav King Peter I – buthis father finally managed to convince him that theking had escaped and left the nation to the Germansand the “communists”. The only thing General Rupnikmanaged to achieve was having a Slovenian flagfluttering next to the German flag on the governmentbuilding. There is one more thing that Kociperrevealed: only him and General Rupnik knew aboutthe German plan of forming a Slovenian SS unit fromthe core of the Home Guard units. For this reason, SSGeneral Rösener insisted on the words of the HomeGuard oath expressing loyalty to Adolf Hitler! The oath was publicly announced in the newspapersJutro and Slovenec in 1944 and 1945 and wasworded as follows:“I swear by God Almighty to be loyal, brave andobedient to my superiors; to stand in common strugglewith the German armed forces, standing underthe command of the leader of Greater Germany, SStroops and the Police against bandits and communismand their allies; this duty I will carry outconscientiously for my Slovenian homeland as partof a free Europe. For this struggle I am also willingto sacrifice my life. So help me God.”The words of the oath undoubtedly show thatmembers of the Home Guard, as part of SS troops148 • V O J A Š K A Z G O D O V I N A
