HEALTH IN QATAR
“We have witnessed a notable
development in treatments in this
period, starting with lump removal.
Even the removal of the whole
breast is now possible if the cancer
spreads. Chemotherapy, radiation
therapy, hormonal therapy, and
total breast construction therapy
are now also available.”
Dr. Abdul Azim Abdulwahab
Qatar Cancer Society’s Vice
Chairman, and head of the
Conference’s Scientific Delegation
JOIN US IN THE FIGHT... I HAVE HOPE
“The conference will set new foundations to breast cancer
treatments through the exchange of expertise and experiments,
and will be split into two sections. The first is scientific,
looking at early detection tests, current treatments and new
developments. The second is educational, focusing on diet and
exercise and their role in protecting against cancer, as well as the
risk factors involved in cancer and how to self-check.”
contribute to reducing the number of cases,
those strategies do not get rid of all cases of
cancer. Therefore, early detection of breast
cancer and improving survival rates are the
corner stones of fighting this disease.”
Dr. Abdul Azim Abdulwahab, Qatar Cancer
Society’s Vice Chairman, and head of the
Conference’s Scientific Delegation further
emphasized the necessity to look out for
warning signs, such as lumps that appear
different from the rest of the breast, a lump
or more under the armpits, changes in shape,
size or color of breast, wrinkles on the breast,
heat coming from it, visible veins, itchiness,
changes in the nipple, for example inward
nipple or ulcers, or unusual secretions.
MOST PROMINENT TREATMENTS
Dr. Abdulwahab spoke of the most prominent
treatments used. “We have witnessed a
notable development in treatments in this
period, starting with lump removal. Even the
removal of the whole breast is now possible if
the cancer spreads. Chemotherapy, radiation
therapy, hormonal therapy, and total breast
reconstruction therapy are now also available.
This is much better than the old days
when the doctor had to remove the entire
breast. The medical boom also includes the
diagnosis phase, which has seen remarkable
developments such as the mammogram, the
MRI, and genetic examination.”
Qatar Cancer Society General Manager,
Ms. Mariam Al-Nuaimi, said that the Breast
Cancer Conference “Current Standards and
8
HEALTH AND LIFE
New Perspectives” is set to take place during
International Breast Cancer Awareness
month, when QCS will launch campaigns to
encourage early detection, the foundational
pillar of prevention and treatment. The events
will also raise awareness of the increasing
number of people diagnosed locally. “Qatar
Cancer Society does its best to raise awareness
of breast cancer, spread knowledge about
healthy lifestyles to prevent it, and shine a
light on the health services available in Qatar.”
Ms. AL-Nuaimi added that a positive
outlook from society and the community
helped to speed up early diagnosis. Women
are increasingly aware of the importance
of regular check-ups. This comes from
the banding together of multiple health
organizations in Qatar, both private and
governmental, which ensure that patients
receive quick and correct diagnosis and
treatment. She also thanked Health and
Life Magazine for its efforts in promoting
health awareness by covering topics related
to personal health which reflects well in the
community.
Ms. Al-Nuaimi confirmed that you can
reduce the risk of getting breast cancer by
exercising regularly for 20-30 minutes at
least 5 days a week, maintaining a healthy
weight, avoiding smoking or drinking alcohol,
breastfeeding for no less than 6 months,
regular check-ups, genetic examinations,
preventative surgery for women who are
at high risk of getting breast cancer, and
minimizing radiation and environmental
