A Hidden Room of Natural Gems<br />

หองที่ประดับประดาดวยอัญมณีแหงธรรมชาติ<br />

Tucked away inside the Dusit Palace is a wondrous<br />

space glistening with iridescent shades of emerald<br />

and sapphire. One might mistaken them for<br />

jewels, but to the contrary, they are much more<br />

organic. The Beetle Wing Room is unlike any<br />

place on earth.<br />

At the centre stands a magnifi cent chandelier<br />

in the image of a swan and Naga King, created<br />

with wings of the Sternocera Aequisignata<br />

(Malang Thup) beetle. Panels of woven wings<br />

and Lipao vines adorn the walls. Visitors will also<br />

get a chance to see masterpieces ornamented<br />

with wings, precious metals and gemstones<br />

created by artisans of the Queen Sirikit Institute.<br />

These detailed works demand extreme patience<br />

and care. To ensure vibrancy, only wings from<br />

beetles who have lived through a natural life<br />

cycle can be used, and these are hand-selected<br />

further to ensure complete symmetry of colours.<br />

Furthermore, this process prevents the extinction<br />

of the beetles allowing them to populate in<br />

Thailand for future generations. The Beetle<br />

Wing Room is amongst many other unique<br />

spaces dedicated to traditional craftsmanship<br />

and decorative arts at the Arts of the Kingdom<br />

Museum in Bangkok.<br />

the Chairman<br />

As we near the joyous birthday of HRH Princess<br />

Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on <strong>April</strong> 2, <strong>2015</strong>, Thai<br />

<strong>Smile</strong> Airways joins the Kingdom of Thailand in<br />

wishing her continued health and happiness.<br />

<strong>April</strong> is also an important month as we celebrate<br />

Thailand’s New Year (Songkran) and on<br />

behalf of my team, I wish our passengers and<br />

their family the highest blessings. We hope you<br />

receive much cheer, prosperity, health and safe<br />

travels.<br />

In order to fully celebrate the Songkran festivities<br />

and provide the very best travel options,<br />

Thai <strong>Smile</strong> has increased our flight frequencies<br />

throughout the month.<br />

From only four aeroplanes in our first year<br />

(2012), we stride into this year with a fleet of<br />

thirteen, and expect that there will be eighteen<br />

new aircrafts to serve our current routes by the<br />

end of <strong>2015</strong>.<br />

Thai <strong>Smile</strong> works with Thai Airways International<br />

to create the most ideal flying experience<br />

for our passengers. This is achieved by focusing<br />

on quality of service, while maintaining high security,<br />

particularly in Asia and the ASEAN region.<br />

In doing so, we wish to help solidify Thailand as<br />

a regional aviation and commercial hub for the<br />

ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).<br />

In an age where people are tied to their smart phones.<br />

Symptoms of low battery can seem worse than national<br />

Selfi es are getting banned for your safety. Last November, a Spanish<br />

woman fell to her death after attempting to take a selfi e on a bridge,<br />

Thingyan (Water) Festival<br />

> ประเทศพม่า / 13-17 เมษายน 2558<br />

The belief behind Songkran, or Thingyan in Myanmar, is that<br />

water can cleanse evil or undesirable things. Other than playful<br />

splashing, on the 17th of <strong>April</strong>, people celebrate the Burmese<br />

New Year by sweeping pagoda bases and freeing fish, as well<br />

as washing hair and cutting nails for the elderly. It is indeed<br />

a day rich in happiness and culture.<br />

inner child in everyone. Nathan Sawaya, the<br />

Most enjoyable trip<br />

Recently on a trip in Japan I got lost. It was<br />

Exciting experience<br />

In Phang-Nga we were tracking down a restaurant but both sides of the path leading to<br />

it were forest. We were worried if it was the right way. And if the car had broken down<br />

Macau is a hybrid city that brings together<br />

the cultures of both the East and the West. It is<br />

comprised of Macau, Taipa and Coloane islands.<br />

The Portuguese have settled in Macau for more<br />

than 400 years and this is why the architecture<br />

is a mix between Chinese and Portuguese style.<br />

Senado Square, the center for celebrations<br />

and shopping excursions, is surrounded by<br />

neo-classical pastel-colored buildings. One is<br />

the Leal Senado, Macau’s Municipalty Office.<br />

Apart from its beautiful exterior, its back garden<br />

and tiled decorations are just as classic.<br />

The remains of St.Paul’s Cathedral’s doors are<br />

also a sight. Formerly an important cathedral,<br />

a fire had consumed the building and left only<br />

the front wall standing. However, even today<br />

it continues to serve as an altar for people to<br />

come and experience the greatness it once<br />

was. On the way up to the cathedral stands a<br />

MOD Design Store, a souvenir shop filled with<br />

designs by artists from Macau and around the<br />

world. Just a quick look around the shop can<br />

easily fill you with inspiration.<br />

Arriving in a city flocked with Chinese temples,<br />

cathedrals, and sacred sites, one must not miss<br />

the opportunity to visit places like the A-Ma<br />

temple, an ancient temple filled with influences<br />

of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, and local<br />

beliefs. The Saint Dominic Cathedral, which was<br />

built by three Dominican priests, also attracts<br />

tourists with its delicate artwork. At the pier, we<br />

can find a 20-meter tall Kwan-yin Statue with<br />

It is said that to truly know a city, one must<br />

at the Taipa Houses Museum. Each green-colored<br />

Thai <strong>Smile</strong> airways takes flight with the<br />

world’s first waterpark-branded livery<br />

featuring Cartoon Network Amazone<br />

Last year on December 09, 2014: THAI<br />

<strong>Smile</strong> Airways joined forces with Amazon<br />

Falls, the owner and operator of Cartoon<br />

Network Amazone in a partnership which<br />

will see the waterpark featured exclusively<br />

on the aircraft livery. The fi rst Cartoon Network<br />

Amazone-branded aircraft is expected<br />

to take fl ight in <strong>April</strong> <strong>2015</strong>, just in time for<br />

the splash-tastic Thai new year holidays of<br />

Songkran.<br />

Opened in October in Chonburi province,<br />

the waterpark is the fi rst Cartoon Network-themed<br />

Fighting to Save the Ecosystem of Thailand’s Oceans<br />

ถึงเวลาแล้วที่จะอนุรักษ์ท้องทะเลไทยในวันนี้ เพื่อที่เราจะมีโลกใต้ทะเลสวยๆ ให้ได้ชื่นชมกันในวันหน้า<br />

Thailand’s oceans attract a myriad of<br />

people, from those looking for a seaside<br />

escape, to sun worshipers, and of course<br />

divers and adventure seekers who come<br />

to admire the Land of <strong>Smile</strong>s. Every year,<br />

from October to June, thousands from all<br />

over the world set out to the experience the<br />

charm of Thailand’s oceans, with its colorful<br />

biodiversity and coral reefs.<br />

However, in just the past few years, the<br />

rapid expansion of urban areas along the<br />

coast have greatly damaged Thailand’s marine<br />

ecosystems. The creatures that seem to<br />

be most affected by these developments are<br />

the coral reefs. They are home to countless<br />

varieties of sea life and are known as the<br />

forests of the ocean, but we often forget that<br />

they are alive and can degrade just as easily<br />

as other living creatures. Anchoring boats<br />

along the living coral, dynamite fishing and<br />

dumping garbage have all accelerated the<br />

decline of natural reefs. Tourists also may<br />

not know that a single coral branch may<br />

take over a hundred years to grow. As each<br />

person takes a single branch for a souvenir,<br />

Thailand may soon be devoid of all of our<br />

coral for at least another century.<br />

But the situation is not hopeless. Agencies<br />

in both government and private sectors have<br />

focused on restoring the reefs and marine<br />

ecosystems through various short and long<br />

term projects. Independent organization<br />

‘Openmind Projects’ and ‘The Little Big<br />

Project Thailand’ (in association with the<br />

Tourism Authority of Thailand) both offer<br />

short-term volunteer opportunities for visitors.<br />

Unsurprisingly, volunteer-tourism (or<br />

“voluntourism”) has increased in popularity.<br />

When people are able to see the beauty of<br />

Thailand’s oceans firsthand, the majority of<br />

visitors wish to return. With proper conservation,<br />

we can keep the reefs pristine for<br />

future generations.<br />

ตุลาคมจนถึงเดือนมิถุนายน นักท่องเที่ยวหลายแสน<br />

คนจากทั ่วโลกออกเดินทางมาเพื ่อสัมผัสกับเสน่ห์<br />

ของใต้ท้องทะเลไทยที่เต็มไปด้วยปลาเขตร้อนหลาก<br />

ชนิดและปะการังสีสันสดใสที่มองได้ไม่รู้เบื่อ<br />

แต่ด้วยการขยายตัวอย่างรวดเร็วของเขตเมืองริม<br />

ชายฝั่ง ระบบนิเวศทางทะเลของประเทศไทยจึงถูก<br />

ทำาลายจนได้รับความเสียหายไม่น้อย และสิ่งมีชีวิตที่<br />

ดูจะได้รับผลกระทบมากที่สุดจากการขยายอาณาเขต<br />

ของมนุษย์ก็คือปะการัง ซึ ่งได้ชื ่อว่าเป็นผืนป่าแห่ง<br />

ท้องทะเลหรือ ‘บ้าน’ ของสิ่งมีชีวิตอื่นๆ แม้ปะการัง<br />

จะเป็นสิ่งมีชีวิตที่เสื่อมโทรมไปตามธรรมชาติเหมือน<br />

สิ่งมีชีวิตทั่วไป แต่ปัจจัยอื่นๆ อย่างการทิ้งสมอเรือ<br />

ในแนวปะการัง รวมถึงการระเบิดปลาและการทิ ้ง<br />

ขยะลงทะเลนั ้นช่วยเร่งกระบวนการเสื ่อมโทรมของ<br />

ปะการังให้เร็วขึ ้นอีกหลายระดับ และหลายคนอาจ<br />

จะไม่รู ้ว่าปะการัง 1 กิ ่งที ่ถูกหักเก็บเป็นที ่ระลึกนั ้น<br />

ต้องใช้เวลาสร้างเป็นร้อยปี นั่นหมายความว่่าหากใน<br />

วันนี้นักท่องเที่ยวพากันเด็ดกิ่งปะการังไปเก็บไว้คนละ<br />

กิ่ง ภายในระยะเวลาอีกไม่นาน ประเทศไทยคงไม่มี<br />

ปะการังเหลือ อย่างน้อยก็ในศตวรรษนี้<br />

แต่อย่่างไรก็ตาม ประเทศไทยก็ไม่ได้สิ้นหวังเสียที<br />

เดียว เพราะปัจจุบันนี้ หน่วยงานต่างๆทั้งภาครัฐและ<br />

ภาคเอกชนได้ให้ความสำาคัญกับการฟื้นฟูปะการังและ<br />

ระบบนิเวศของท้องทะเลไทยผ่านโครงการต่างๆ ทั้ง<br />

ระยะสั ้นและระยะยาว ในขณะที ่องค์กรอิสระอย่าง<br />

Openmind Projects และ The Little Big Project<br />

Thailand (ที ่สนับสนุนโดยการท่องเที ่ยวแห่ง<br />

ประเทศไทย) นำาเสนอโปรแกรมระยะสั้นที่เปิดโอกาส<br />

ให้นักท่องเที ่ยวได้ทำางานอาสาพัฒนาระบบนิเวศ<br />

ทางทะเลระหว่างเดินทางมาท่องเที่ยวในประเทศไทย<br />

ได้ และก็ไม่น่าแปลกใจเลยว่าโปรแกรมการท่องเที่ยว<br />

เชิงอาสา (voluntourism) นี้จะได้รับความนิยมมาก<br />

ขึ ้นเรื ่อยๆ เพราะพอได้มาเห็นความงดงามใต้ท้อง<br />

ทะเลไทยกับตาตัวเองแล้ว นักท่องเที ่ยวส่วนใหญ่<br />

ก็อดไม่ได้ที ่จะอยากกลับมาอีก และทำาอย่างไรให้ได้<br />

กลับมาเห็นท้องทะเลสวยๆ เหมือนเช่นวันนี้? ก็ลงมือ<br />

รักษาเสียตั้งแต่วันนี้ยังไงล่ะ<br />
