85 years old patient holds on to the life with a
valve derived from bovine pericardium!
Suffering from palpitation and shortness of breath for 15 years, 85 years old
Hanım Yaş had severe stenosis in the aortic valve. This old woman had to take
medicines to survive, as various hospitals found her inoperable, and the heart
of the female patient is replaced by suture-free valve derived from bovine
pericardium in a 45-minute operation in Okan University Hospital.
The heart of 85 years old Hanım
Yaş, who was suffering from
palpitation and shortness of breath
for 15 years, reached the critical
level due to the sorrow of losing
her son and daughter sequentially
3 years ago. Since severe aortic
stenosis was detected and she
was reported high risk in various
hospitals, she could not undergo
cardiac surgery and Mrs. Yaş found
the remedy in Okan University
Hospital, where she presented
upon an advice. Treatment is
started here for this old woman,
who could not lie on her back and
suffers from severe palpitations.
First, Kidney Functions Are
Normalized
Since Mrs. Hanım Yaş also had
renal failure, it was necessary to
normalize her kidney functions in
order to operate on the patient.
After Mrs. Yaş was maintained
on treatment for 1 week, renal
failure was persisting and
normal angiography could not be
performed, as she could not lie on
her back. Next, CT angiography is
scanned with the state-of-the-art
scanner and no pathology could
be found in coronary arteries.
After the renal functions were
normalized, the patient was ready
to undergo the operation.
Suture-free Valve Derived from
Bovine Pericardium is implanted
Since 85 years old woman had
renal failure, it was necessary
to complete the operation within
a very short time. Professor of
Cardiovascular Surgery Hızır
Mete Alp, M.D., and Lecturer Salih
Salihi, M.D., decided to implant
the suture-free heart valve that is
made from the bovine pericardium
to the patient. Following the
45-minute operation, the patient
got healthy again.
Shortness of Breath Is Left Back
“I am far better than the past.
Shortness of breath completely
disappeared. I will even be better.
I thank Professor Hızır Mete and
Doctor Salih. I survive thanks to
their efforts” said Mrs. Hanım Yaş,
who was discharged 1 week after
the operation and could walk back
to the home.
The Surgeon Carrying Out The
Procedure First Time in Turkey:
Prof. Hızır Mete Alp, M.D.
“Overall condition of the patient
was very poor when presented
to the hospital. She could not
lie on her back. Other facilities
deemed her inoperable and left the
patient to her fate. We operated
on the patient following detailed
investigations and treatments. It
was a high-risk surgery. An aortic
valve replacement is performed
that takes shorter time than the
conventional operation, and a
heart valve derived from bovine
pericardium is used that does
not require stitching. Complaints
are relieved and the patient got
healthy again” said Prof. Hızır Mete
Alp, M.D., who pioneered such
procedures in Turkey.
