Message
from the Chair of Architect Expo 2018
Vernacular architecture sometimes seems to be collectively understood, yet
vaguely distanced, but often taken for granted. Architect Expo 2018’s theme
is about vernacular architecture, or to be precise ‘vernacular living’. On the
one hand, it is because the ideas of vernacular architecture and living have
become highly popular among Thai architects as well as those foreign ones.
On the other hands, it is an opportunity to examine the definition and the
possibility of vernacular architecture design within the contemporary context,
using Architect Expo 2018 as a platform.
Eighteen groups of architect and five curators are invited to participate with
the design of the contents and the exhibition pavilions of the Architect Expo
2018, under the title of ‘Beyond Ordinary’. They are challenged to present the
idea of ‘Beyond Ordinary’ vernacular architecture, which is readily available to
develop and adapt within the contemporary context, through their views, interpretations,
values and meanings, and designs. This ‘Beyond Ordinary’ is also
extended towards material experimentation, model making, construction and
prefabrication, logistics and assembling at the exposition, to name but a few.
This booklet presents the academic and designed-wised questions and the
ideas behind the organising of the Architect Expo 2018. It is hoped that the
booklet will be a part of the initiatives to re-evaluate the cultural heritage, and
further develop and put forth the design of vernacular architecture as a solid
alternative architectural design in Thailand, and the South-East Asia region,
perhaps.
