“A museum is not<br />
something just for tourists,<br />
it s something for the<br />
people first, where they<br />
can see and learn about<br />
their culture.”<br />
A more subtle effect of this training program was<br />
also to exemplify that a museum has a role to play in its<br />
community since it is a place of learning. A museum provides<br />
a great opportunity for sharing experiences and<br />
transmitting cultural and social values.<br />
Another principal objective of this<br />
project is to strengthen the partnership<br />
between Avataq and the museum<br />
in Inukjuak, to promote greater cultural<br />
transmission among Inukjuammiut, by<br />
increasing the museum’s offer of cultural<br />
activities based on the contents<br />
of their collection.<br />
Based on the grant that Avataq<br />
benefited from, this project started last<br />
spring and should end this fall. But for<br />
us, this project is most importantly the<br />
continuation of the interventions made<br />
by Avataq’s Museology Department<br />
since 2009.<br />
Besides the visits to museums in<br />
and around Montreal, the program has<br />
included the implementation of an educational project<br />
with Mary Ann Haney’s grade four students at Innalik<br />
School in Inukjuak. The theme of the project was “Great<br />
