George Zander, a longtime LGBT
rights activist in Palm Springs
AREA, Celebration Of Life to be
held march 20
George Zander and his husband, Chris,
were attacked in a hate crime in early
November. Zander’s death has deeply saddened
this community and has left a large
hole in local activism. Suspects Keith Terranova,
35, and James Carr, 30, are charged
with elder abuse and felony hate crimes.
One could find George working for all of
us every week, at the street fair booth, at
his office or with the LGBT Center booths,
parties and events. He wrote weekly articles,
spoke at LGBT events and organized
the hell out of us. He was one of a number
of often thanked people in this town that
worked quietly but tirelessly on our behalf.
Around the nation reports about George
Zander as a veteran political activist, most
recently as a field organizer for statewide
LGBT rights group Equality California. But
he was a partner in our lives, a rare commodity
these days.
Those that worked with George came to
respect his work for Equality California in
2009, he brought such talent and energy to
his work to help advance marriage equality,
ensure healthcare and provide a safer
environment for LGBT students. Dignitaries
such as Former Equality California
executive director Geoff Kors, who is now
a Palm Springs City Council member, and
activist Cleve Jones also expressed shock
and grief. As reported in the local papers
Andy Linsky Human Rights Campaign
board member and Palm Springs resident,
who worked with Zander on various issues,
said Zander’s contribution to the LGBT
community in Palm Springs and beyond is
everlasting. Tom Swann, president of the
Riverside County Veterans for Peace, and
one of the founding members of Desert
Stonewall Democrats, recalled meeting
Zander in 1998. Zander assisted Swann
with drafting a resolution that ultimately
allowed gay veterans to march in the
Palm Springs Veterans parade for the first
time on Nov. 11, 1999. I am proud to say I
march with Tom Swann nearly every year.
For us here at the local LGBT press, George
Zander chose DDG to write a weekly political
activist column, because all the others
insist on censoring everything, he once told
us. We are small he said but a powerful
rainmaker for social justice. Zander also
helped us produce many political events,
including LGBT candidate forums I was
told would never happen. We had nearly
perfect attendance for all candidates and
has became a great model for future LGBT
political activism. Will Paige
Tom Swann and Guillermo Hernandezn Wedding!
Congratulations from the DDG!
Even a marriage inside a federal immigration center did not dampen spirits of this
happy couple. But for the United States, it wsas the first same-sex marriage of someone
in detention awaiting a deportation hearing.
But Swann makes history all the time! For veterans, and the LGBT community. “This
is the happiest day of my life,” said Swann, 58, shortly after he wed Hernandez. “Happier
than the day I graduated boot camp in the Marine Corps.” Mr. Swann’s military
case was instrumental in securing protection against sexual orientation discrimination
for lesbian and gay civilian employees of the Armed Services. “Tom Swann’s book
is a how to succeed handbook, a standard operating procedure for gay activists taking
on the conservative establishment, whether it is in government or the private sector.
Served on the national AMVETS Diversity Committee, Tom founded Riverside County
Veterans for Peace and spoke at Camp Casey (Crawford, Texas) with Cindy Sheehan.
Dedicated the peace pole outside Cathedral City Library and at Desert Mirage
High School, Swann is founding chair of the only certified Democratic Party veterans’
caucus in America. Personally met every American President since Richard Nixon.
WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS
ARIES March 20-April 18: You
can be guileless in the most winning
way. A simple remark from
you gets a standoffish type to
open up faster than others.
TAURUS April 19-May 19: Your
idea of what someone wants is
a far cry from this person’s real
aim. Expectations are lower than
you make them out to be.
GEMINI May 20-June 20: Did
you mishear or did someone misspeak?
The truth ends up being
simpler (and better) than what
you were led to believe.
CANCER June 21-July 21: You
can be immoveable when you
want to be so hunker down. Your
refusal to budge gets others to
change their position.
LEO July 22-Aug. 21: You want to
make people happy, but stick with
what you believe is right. They’ll
come around to accepting your
point of view.
VIRGO Aug. 22-Sept. 21:
Looking for common ground is
like trying to find a needle in a
haystack. Don’t wait on others.
Exercise a firmer hand in shaping
consensus.
LIBRA Sept. 22-Oct. 22: Remember
the story of the Emperor and
his new clothes? Don’t assume
that people don’t know things.
SCORPIO Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Being
in the right doesn’t feel very good
when you’re the only one who
knows it. Thank heavens you
thrive in the heat of controversy.
SAGITTARIUS Nov. 22-Dec. 20:
A simple plan becomes unnecessarily
complicated. Reintroduce
it again with the needed changes
and it will go through.
CAPRICORN Dec. 21-Jan. 18:
Forgiving a debt may not be the
worst thing. In fact it could come
around to benefit you one day.
AQUARIUS Jan. 19-Feb. 17:
Everyone knows that it’s your
idea but say that it’s a boss’s or
client’s instead. This person needs
the ego stroking more than you.
PISCES Feb. 18-March 19: Is
there such a thing as selling out
when everything nowadays is user-friendly?
Yes. The path of least
resistance always leads to a steep
cost if you’re not careful.
JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore
Are you particular about what you
put in your mouth? Or are you one of
those people that stick anything into
their mouths? I am not limiting this
question to one particular thought.
I know most of you are thinking
sex. I always do. Some thought of
boogers or inanimate object. Sure,
even though I have NEVER eaten a
booger. Not even as a kid. Gross.
With this thought I am referring to
the food you put in your mouth? Do
you eat healthy or does Mickey D’s
satisfy your needs as they kiss your
lips? I won’t let a few fast food chains
go thru my gullet.
I am as just as surprised as you are.
I am a foodie. I like food. I’m fat,
thin-ish, fat, try to lose, stocky.... I
was raised in a BIG house, so for me
to not let a couple of the fast food
companies pass my Eggplant colored
lips, then it must be given a second
thought. If it even looks like meat?
And a good piece of meat near your
lips isn’t a bad thing, but you should
look at before it enters. It could
make you sick. Even if the meat
isn’t digestible. It can still make you
sick. So, I guess this article is about
health.
The lesson for today is to be careful
of what you put in your mouth. It
can make you sick. The more you
know. Sarcasm is the one thing I
dish out for free. If you got paid for
sarcasm, I would be one rich S.O.B...
A little sarcasm in a good light never
hurt anyone, unless you are ultra-sensitive,
then you must chill out.
Life is easier when you chill out!
Peace, Love, and sarcasm,
