What did one Christmas tree say to the
other? You need to lighten up.
Today I went and bought a real Christmas tree.
The guy selling it asked me if I was going to put
it up myself. I said No, you sick bastard, I’m
putting it in my living room!
“Twas the night before Christmas, and all
DID THE GRINCH STEAL
CHRISTMAS CARDS?
Christmas cards immigrated to the U.S.
in the middle 1800s and were initially
produced by a printing company
started by Louis Prang whose company
also began the production of Crayola
crayons and other art materials. These
early cards were primarily designed
for the wealthy class. The sending of
Christmas cards by average people
came about after the mass printing
processes of Currier and Ives making the
printing of cards more affordable.
The sale of Christmas cards has declined
in recent years. The earliest examples
of Christmas cards are credited to
Henry Cole an English civil servant who
originated the idea of sending cards for
the Christmas holiday in the 1840s.
market.
During recent years the sale of Christmas
cards has gradually declined. The
demand has grown for more personal
cards that fit the lifestyle of the sender
and receiver. Technology has brought
about e-cards for example, which
have grown in popularity and varied
examples are available in animation
and sound. Cards specifically designed
for lgbtq people have become more
prominent also. Major card companies
such as Hallmark and American
Greetings have recognized that market
along with some gay artists who have
designed cards for the Christmas
holiday.
Other
examples of
lgbtq cards
are available
in humorous,
romantic, or
Act 2: Rebuilding Without Electronics
Solar Magnetic Slicing
Scene 1: Seeking Solutions
People turn to history for solutions, discovering
non-electronic communication methods.
Signal flags, flaming arrows, drum beats, and
messenger pigeons become vital in rebuilding
a world without electronics.
Scene 2: Communities Band Together
Act 1: The Great Technology Fail
Scene 1: Living Room on Christmas Eve
A cozy living room adorned with Christmas
decorations. Dad gathers his children around
the crackling fireplace.
DAD
(voice warm)
Kids, tonight I’m going to tell you about
a Christmas from my childhood, before
computers and smartphones.
Communities unite, sharing knowledge and
relearning forgotten skills. Schools prioritize
nature and environmental education, and
libraries become information hubs.
Act 3: A New World
Scene 1: Transformation of Transportation and
Energy Production
Cities become pedestrian and cyclist-friendly.
Bicycles, horses, and walking replace electronic
vehicles. Renewable energy sources replace
fossil fuels, and people harness rivers for power.
Scene 2: Chaos Ensues
As Dad begins his story, the Internet suddenly
goes down, creating chaos worldwide. Reports
of outages flood the news, and panic ensues.
This family will experience the impact of the
first Great Technology Fail of 2023.
Scene 2: Embracing Simplicity and
Sustainability
The new world values simplicity and
sustainability. Hand-written letters, homegrown
food, and live performances take
precedence over gadgets. People find
happiness in meaningful connections.
Scene 3: Celebrating a Different Kind of
Christmas
Children run downstairs, eager to unwrap
presents under the tree. The joy of playing
outside and creating memories with neighbors
replaces virtual interactions. The family
celebrates Christmas in a simpler, more
connected way.
NARRATOR (Dad)
(voiceover)
This is not a story of regression but of
progression. A society that learned from its
past, adapted to its present, and built a better
future.
Scene 4: Hope for the Future
natural.
Scene 3: A Christmas Reunion
Friends and neighbors join the family for a
Christmas reunion. The room is filled with
familiar faces, each with stories of resilience
and adaptation.
Scene 4: The Gift of Connection
Amidst the celebration, a knock on the door
interrupts the festivities. The postman delivers
a bundle of letters and packages.
DAD
(curious)
What’s this?
As the family embraces the new world, they
reflect on the lessons learned and the hope for
a future that balances technology with human
connection.
DAD
(voice filled with nostalgia)
Kids, it’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since
the Great Technology Fail. Tonight, let me tell
you about our first Christmas in the new world.
Scene 5: Reflecting on Progress
The family reflects on the progress made over
the years. Sustainable practices, stronger
communities, and the joy of simpler living have
become the norm.
POSTMAN
(smiling)
It’s a special delivery. Hand-written letters and
gifts from friends and family around the world.
A tradition that has returned.
Scene 5: Embracing Traditions
The family, surrounded by loved ones, opens
the letters and gifts. Hand-written notes,
drawings, and tokens of love replace digital
messages.
NARRATOR (Dad)
(voiceover)
In this new world, we’ve not only embraced
the simplicity of the past but also held onto
the meaningful traditions that make Christmas
special.
classic horror story, “Call of Cthulhu”
the character Tigger, and Millions
like Dorothy Field’s “I Can’t Give You
Anything But Love, Baby” and Cole
I am trained using a diverse range of
The Indian Canyons
Fifteen miles long, Palm Canyon is one of
the areas of great beauty in Western North
America. Its indigenous flora and fauna, which
the Cahuilla people so expertly used, and its
abundant Washingtonia filifera (California Fan
Palm) are breathtaking contrasts to the stark
rocky gorges and barren desert lands beyond.
A moderately graded foot path winds down
into the canyon for picnicking near the stream,
meditation, exploring, hiking or horseback
riding. For more information call 760-323-6018
