CHRISTMAS CARDS?
Christmas cards immigrated to the U.S.
in the middle 1800s and were initially
produced by a printing company
started by Louis Prang whose company
also began the production of Crayola
crayons and other art materials. These
early cards were primarily designed
for the wealthy class. The sending of
Christmas cards by average people
came about after the mass printing
processes of Currier and Ives making the
printing of cards more affordable.
The sale of Christmas cards has declined
in recent years. The earliest examples
of Christmas cards are credited to
Henry Cole an English civil servant who
originated the idea of sending cards for
the Christmas holiday in the 1840s.

The 1940s and 50s demonstrated the
highest sales of Christmas cards with
Hallmark Cards commissioning well-

known artists such as Salvador Dali
and Norman Rockwell among other
prominent artists to design for them.

During recent years the sale of Christmas
cards has gradually declined. The
demand has grown for more personal
cards that fit the lifestyle of the sender
and receiver. Technology has brought
about e-cards for example, which
have grown in popularity and varied
examples are available in animation
and sound. Cards specifically designed
for lgbtq people have become more
prominent also. Major card companies
such as Hallmark and American
Greetings have recognized that market
along with some gay artists who have
designed cards for the Christmas
holiday.

in humorous,
romantic, or
eroticmways.
The Grinch
has not stolen
Christmas card
traditions but
has helped to
increase the
specific market
to appeal to
a diversified
client base.

Bicycles, horses, and walking replace electronic
vehicles. Renewable energy sources replace

As Dad begins his story, the Internet suddenly
goes down, creating chaos worldwide. Reports
of outages flood the news, and panic ensues.

The Indian Canyons
Fifteen miles long, Palm Canyon is one of
the areas of great beauty in Western North
America. Its indigenous flora and fauna, which
the Cahuilla people so expertly used, and its
abundant Washingtonia filifera (California Fan
Palm) are breathtaking contrasts to the stark
rocky gorges and barren desert lands beyond.
A moderately graded foot path winds down
into the canyon for picnicking near the stream,
meditation, exploring, hiking or horseback

The Palm Springs Air Museum is a living
history museum dedicated to educating the
public about the role Air Power played in
preserving American liberties and way of life.
The Museum preserves, exhibits, and flies
aircraft from World War Two, Korean War,
Vietnam War and the Global War on Terror. A
good portion of the aircraft in the collection are
in flyable condition.
Open Cockpit Saturdays
Museum guests are treated to the extra special
experience of being allowed to sit at the controls
and pose for pictures. From 10:30-12:30 each
Saturday, a selected aircraft will be opened up
and made accessible to the public. Museum
Volunteers will also be on hand to answer

you use a blacklight? Using our blacklights, we
will take a short walk along the Art Smith Trail
basin looking for the many nocturnal creatures
that inhabit our desert. And a week-long Summer
BioBlitz.
