A GAY ARTIST FINDS HIS WAY
THROUGH DISCRIMINATION
WITH HIS ART
a music festival when he and his partner
experienced a fierce attack by a small
group of homophobic men. He was
left unconscious and toothless. This
life-changing experience left him with
anger, denial, and sadness but also
gave him more self-confidence and
a commitment not to be quiet about
violence and hate. He moved first
to Berlin, Germany where he felt he
The year 2023 has seen numerous
homophobic and transphobic bills
introduced and in some states passed at
alarming rates. Florida, Louisiana. North
Carolina, Missouri, and Texas have been
at the forefront of hate laws. The LGBTQ
community has gained more positive
acceptance over the past two decades
but there has been an active and
vocal siege of anti-rights bills introduced
this year. Artists are in the forefront of
challenging discrimination and hatemongering.
One of these artists is Andrew Salgado,
a Canadian artist who experienced
the wrath of homophobic hate in his
home country in 2008. He was leaving
wanted to do further study and write his
master’s thesis in German, a language
which he studied for 3 years while in
undergraduate work in Canada. He
found Germany not to be accepting of
his art and not welcoming as a place
to live even though he still loves it as
a tourist. This brought him to London
where he has lived and created his art
since 2010.
Selgado says that the early violent
experience was a turning point in his
life where he always had dreams of
becoming an artist. As his work evolved
his art became his weapon. He says
he is not the angry youth he once
was but that “his art is still the vehicle
for his voice”. He is actively involved
in LGBTQ issues and art is an amazing
way to talk about political issues. With
his recent successes in the art world,
he contributes generously to LGBTQ
charities
and more
reflective of his
experiences
and his visual
comments on
current culture.
Although Selgado
lives in the UK
he has been
greatly influenced
by the continuing violence in the U.S.
The Orlando massacre and the mass
shootings in Colorado Springs had
a profound effect on him and was
reflected in the art he produced at the
time.
The Beers Gallery in London is Salgado’s
primary outlet. His work is figurative and
somewhat homoerotic. The mediums
he works with are primarily oil and oil
pastels. Male figures and portraits
are the primary subjects with abstract
aesthetics compared to artists such as
Henri Matisse, Paul Gauguin, and Francis
Bacon. although Selgado’s work
is more contemporary, more colorful,
This pre-election
year has been
reflective of hatemongering
coming
especially from the
MAGA wing of the
Republican Party. LGBTQj hate crimes
have shown an increase of 40 percent
with added emphasis on transgender
crimes increasing over 60 percent. The
targeting of vulnerable groups has
always been an emphasis with rightwing
supremacists. Artists of all genres
have been spearheading and exposing
the evil of these pitiable groups and
their destructive influence in society.
throughout history. The year 2024 will
be an indicator of how this democratic
society continues to either be more
reflective of or regressive of acceptance
and equality. Hoping and Wishing for
a positive and accepting NEW YEAR.

New Laws Going Into Effect On January
Published: Dec 29, 2023
SACRAMENTO – In partnership with the
Legislature, Governor Gavin Newsom
this year signed landmark legislation
to support the reproductive rights
of Californians, increase affordable
housing, hold Big Oil accountable, and
protect the safety, health, and wellbeing
of all Californians.
WHAT GOVERNOR NEWSOM SAID:
“California is more than just a state of
dreamers, we’re a state of doers. Thanks
to the Legislature’s strong partnership in
2023, the state is leading by example to
create opportunity, and advance and
protect the rights of all Californians.”
Here is a quick look at a few bills that will
take effect on January 1, 2024:
FIGHTING FOR REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS
Assemblymember Bauer-Kahan’s AB
352 requires companies that manage
electronic health records to protect
all Californians’ and visitors’ electronic
medical records related to abortion,
gender-affirming care, pregnancy loss,
and other sensitive services. This closes
Senator Skinner’s SB 345 protects
providers and people from enforcement
action in California of other states’ laws
that criminalize or limit reproductive and
gender-affirming health care services.
ADDRESSING THE OPIOID CRISIS
Assemblymember Haney’s AB 663
allows for more mobile pharmacies to
be created in communities across the
state and enables them to dispense
treatment medications for opioid use
disorder.
WORKERS’ RIGHTS
Governor Newsom signed Senator
Gonzalez’s SB 616, which expands the
number of sick days available to workers
from 3 to 5.
INCREASING VOTER ACCESS
Assemblymember Pellerin’s AB 545
allows voters with a disability to
complete a regular ballot outside of
any polling place—known as curbside
voting—and removes the requirement
for a voter to declare under oath that
TAKING ON BIG OIL
Dianne Feinstein
The longtime California senator died on
“Dianne Feinstein was many things – a
powerful, trailblazing U.S. Senator; an early
voice for gun control; a leader in times of
tragedy and chaos. But to me, she was a dear
for me and my wife and daughters for what a
powerful, effective leader looks like,” California
governor Gavin Newsom wrote in a statement.
“She was a political giant whose tenacity was
the spirit of political cooperation. And she
Newsom concluded: “Nobody possessed the
price gouging. It also creates a
new independent state watchdog
to investigate market or price
manipulation.
INCREASING AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Senator Wiener’s SB 423 extends
and expands existing law, requiring
local governments that are failing to
meet state housing planning goals to
streamline affordable housing projects.
This will increase affordable housing
throughout the state in uncooperative
cities.
Senator Wiener’s SB 4, known as the
“Yes in God’s Backyard” bill, allows
housing to be developed on property
owned by religious or independent
higher education institutions. These
groups are given this authority “by right,”
which requires no discretionary local
governance intervention.
ADDRESSING THE MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS
Together, these reforms will be proposed
to the voters for approval on the March
2024 ballot as Proposition 1.
Senator Eggman’s SB 326 reforms the
Mental Health Services Act—making
better use of Mental Health Services Act
funding to address today’s needs and
increasing accountability to the public.
Assemblymember Irwin’s AB 531 would
issue $6.38 billion in bonds to fund
11,150 new behavioral health beds and
housing as well as 26,700 outpatient
treatment slots.
PUBLIC SAFETY
In September, Governor Newsom
signed Senator Grove’s SB 14 to steepen
penalties for human trafficking of minors
in California. The law designates human
trafficking of a minor for purposes of a
commercial sex act as a serious felony.
STREAMLINING THE UC TRANSFER
PROCESS
What you should know: AB 1291 by
Assemblymember McCarty establishes
the University of California (UC)
Associate Degree for Transfer Pilot
Program, beginning with UCLA, to
prioritize admission of a student who
earns an associate degree for transfer
(ADT) from selected community colleges
and to redirect a student who meets
those requirements but is denied
admission to the applicable campus
and offer admission to at least one
other campus. Expanding ADTs to the
UC system allows qualified community
college transfer students to fulfill the
requirements of an ADT and meet the
requirements for participating UC and
CSU campuses, streamlining the transfer
process and saving students money by
being able to earn two degrees in four
years.

The Indian Canyons
Fifteen miles long, Palm Canyon is one of
the areas of great beauty in Western North
America. Its indigenous flora and fauna, which
the Cahuilla people so expertly used, and its
abundant Washingtonia filifera (California Fan
Palm) are breathtaking contrasts to the stark
rocky gorges and barren desert lands beyond.
A moderately graded foot path winds down
into the canyon for picnicking near the stream,
meditation, exploring, hiking or horseback
riding. For more information call 760-323-6018
