REPORTER: Adam EMAIL: adamsartexpose@gmail.com ADAMSARTEXPOSE’
Turkey has been the notable food
for the Thanksgiving table. Norman
Rockwell, artist documentarian of
U.S. historical events has painted
romanticized and comical versions
of historical events. His painting
titled, “Cousin Reginald Catches the
Thanksgiving Turkey”, is both humorous
and a chronicle of the fate of millions
of turkeys over the past century since
turkey became the unofficial food for
Thanksgiving.
THE DUBIOUS HISTORY
OF THANKSGIVING THROUGH
ART
Based on historical records the artist
Jean Leon Gerome Ferris painted the
first painting depicting Thanksgiving
showing members of the Wampanoag
Tribe sharing a feast with English settlers
who had inhabited some of their land
the previous year. This painting was
completed in 1912 as part of a series of
scenes from American History called the
Pageant of History with 78 paintings all
created by Ferris. This painting depicting
an event in 1621 is also idealized based
on his interpretation of what this event
may have looked like.
The codification of Thanksgiving as a
national holiday was proclaimed by
President Abraham Lincoln in October of
1863. It was also an attempt to unify the
United States
following the Civil War. A wood
engraving by Winslow Homer created
in 1865 titled “Hanging Up The Musket”
Shows a man hanging a rifle used in the
Civil War under an older musket hanging
above a musket from the Revolutionary
War.
One of the most representational of
what could be an actual scene from
an early Thanksgiving is a Currier and
Ives print titled “ Home to Thanksgiving”
from 1860. This scene may have been
arriving for a
Thanksgiving
feast. Currier
a printing
business in New York City which was
known for emblematic scenes such
as this one of country life. The artist is
unknown.
Another iconic painting by Norman
Rockwell titled “Freedom From Want”
painted in 1943 shows a family about
to participate in a feast featuring a
large turkey. This painting was one of
4 painted by Rockwell that emanated
from a speech by President Delano
Roosevelt in 1941 defining the Four
Freedoms, including Freedom of
Speech, Freedom of Worship. Freedom,
from Fear, and Freedom from Want
as portrayed in this painting. Which
defined the four freedoms of the
U.S. resistance to fascism. We may
need a revival of this same sentiment
considering the attack on freedom and
democracy by a former president and
some of his confused followers. Today’s
Thanksgiving is celebrated around
numerous TV football games and family
get-togethers. That is for families that
haven’t been divided by the political
disagreements over
the former president’s
proclivities for denying
the loss of an election
and a threat to return
and create his own
autocracy. We can be thankful that
Democracy still exists and to an extent,
the Four Freedoms are still prevalent.
In
The
News...or not
by AioBUS
The troubles with AI
I have followed AI since I was a developer
in the 80s at DEC. My first project was
training Caterpillar’s help desk data to
suggest fixes to complex problems. The
new AI has been user-commercialized to
the degree that it will be BAD for many
reasons. AI in Spot® - The Agile Mobile
Robot could easily make an unemotional
or biased but wrong decision.
It may be helpful to address these
problems with an actual ChatGPT
interview.
ME:
What DO you know about the LGBT
Veterans Memorial?
ChatGPT:
As of my last knowledge update in
January 2022, I don’t have specific
information about an LGBT Veterans
memorial. However, there are various
memorials and efforts to recognize
the contributions of LGBT individuals
in the military. It’s possible that new
developments or memorials have
emerged since then. I recommend
checking the latest sources for the most
up-to-date information on any LGBT
Veterans memorial.
16 DDG is always FREE ddg.gay. Available in print at select locations.
How can this be?
https://capitolmuseum.ca.gov/statesymbols/lgbtq-veterans-memorial/
“The California LGBTQ Veterans Memorial
is the first official veterans memorial of
its type to be dedicated in the United
States. The California Legislature passed
legislation creating the memorial in 2018.”
I know Tom Swann Hernandez, an LGBTQ
advocate who served in the U.S. Marine
Corps and Naval Air Reserve. He led the
effort to create the memorial. The obelisk,
engraved with an eagle and a pink
triangle, was erected in 2001. We honor it
every Veterans Day since.
No record of it shows a solid anti-LGBT bias
in every gay answer.
I also reasoned that Chipotle was the
reason for Christopher Columbus’s
success. Columbus’s expeditions
inaugurated a period of exploration,
conquest, colonization, and death. That
has lasted for centuries. All because the
natives gave him a spice to try.
ChatGPT:
The idea that Christopher Columbus might
have encountered Chipotle or smoked
chili is intriguing. The self-preserving nature
of dried and smoked foods could indeed
make them suitable for long journeys,
aiding in their preservation during the
extended oceanic voyages of that time.
It offers a fascinating perspective on the
historical intersection of food, exploration,
and survival.
That blew ChatGPT’s mind, so it remains a
garbage in, garbage out, but still a fun toy

The Indian Canyons
Fifteen miles long, Palm Canyon is one of
the areas of great beauty in Western North
America. Its indigenous flora and fauna, which
the Cahuilla people so expertly used, and its
abundant Washingtonia filifera (California Fan
Palm) are breathtaking contrasts to the stark
rocky gorges and barren desert lands beyond.
A moderately graded foot path winds down
into the canyon for picnicking near the stream,
meditation, exploring, hiking or horseback
riding. For more information call 760-323-6018
