were lost in acts of anti-transgender 

violence.

Turkey has been the notable food 

for the Thanksgiving table. Norman 

Rockwell, artist documentarian of 

U.S. historical events has painted 

romanticized and comical versions 

of historical events. His painting 

titled, “Cousin Reginald Catches the 

Thanksgiving Turkey”, is both humorous 

and a chronicle of the fate of millions 

of turkeys over the past century since 

turkey became the unofficial food for 

Thanksgiving. 

THE DUBIOUS HISTORY 

OF THANKSGIVING THROUGH 

ART 

Based on historical records the artist 

Jean Leon Gerome Ferris painted the 

first painting depicting Thanksgiving 

showing members of the Wampanoag 

Tribe sharing a feast with English settlers 

who had inhabited some of their land 

the previous year. This painting was 

completed in 1912 as part of a series of 

scenes from American History called the 

Pageant of History with 78 paintings all 

created by Ferris. This painting depicting 

an event in 1621 is also idealized based 

on his interpretation of what this event 

may have looked like. 

The codification of Thanksgiving as a 

national holiday was proclaimed by 

President Abraham Lincoln in October of 

1863. It was also an attempt to unify the 

United States 

following the Civil War. A wood 

engraving by Winslow Homer created 

in 1865 titled “Hanging Up The Musket” 

Shows a man hanging a rifle used in the 

Civil War under an older musket hanging 

above a musket from the Revolutionary 

War.

what could be an actual scene from

from a speech by President Delano 

Roosevelt in 1941 defining the Four 

Freedoms, including Freedom of 

Speech, Freedom of Worship. Freedom, 

from Fear, and Freedom from Want 

as portrayed in this painting. Which 

defined the four freedoms of the 

U.S. resistance to fascism. We may 

need a revival of this same sentiment 

considering the attack on freedom and 

democracy by a former president and 

some of his confused followers. Today’s 

Thanksgiving is celebrated around 

numerous TV football games and family 

get-togethers. That is for families that 

haven’t been divided by the political 

disagreements over 

the former president’s 

proclivities for denying 

the loss of an election 

and a threat to return 

and create his own 

autocracy. We can be thankful that 

Democracy still exists and to an extent, 

the Four Freedoms are still prevalent.

enjoy a special holiday show live at the patio of 

Eight4Nine Restaurant & Lounge. The auction 

begins at 6 pm. 

Dec. 2, Festival of Lights Parade. The 31st 

annual Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade 

will take place on December 2nd at 5:45 pm. The 

parade is on Palm Canyon Drive between Ramon 

Road and Tachevah Road. This beloved holiday 

parade features Macy’s-style balloons, marching 

bands, floats, and much more.

The Affordable Connectivity 

Program is an FCC benefit 

program that helps ensure 

that households can afford 

the broadband they need for 

work, school, healthcare and 

more. 

The benefit provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward 

internet service for eligible households and up to $75 per month 

for households on qualifying Tribal lands. 

Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up 

to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from 

participating providers if they contribute more than $10 and 

less than $50 toward the purchase price. 

The Affordable Connectivity Program is limited to one monthly 

service discount and one device discount per household. 

Who Is Eligible for the Affordable Connectivity Program? 

A household is eligible for the Affordable Connectivity Program 

if the household income is at or below 200% of the Federal 

Poverty Guidelines, or if a member of the household meets at 

least one of the criteria below: 

Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year; 

Meets the eligibility criteria for a participating provider’s 

existing low-income internet program;

Palm Springs Art Museum was founded in 

1938 as the Palm Springs Desert Museum at 

La Plaza in downtown Palm Springs. Natural 

science exhibits, Cahuilla Indian artifacts, and 

hiking excursions dominated the institution’s

before arriving at the Museum.

tram car—travels over two-and-one-half miles 

along the breathtaking cliffs of Chino Canyon,

of the Mt. San Jacinto State Park. During 

your approximately ten-minute journey, tram 

cars rotate slowly, offering picturesque and 

spectacular vistas of the valley floor below. 

Once you reach the Mountain Station—elevation 

8,516 feet—enjoy two restaurants, observation 

decks, natural history museum, two documentary 

theaters, gift shop and over 50 miles of hiking 

trails.

The Indian Canyons 

Fifteen miles long, Palm Canyon is one of 

the areas of great beauty in Western North 

America. Its indigenous flora and fauna, which 

the Cahuilla people so expertly used, and its 

abundant Washingtonia filifera (California Fan 

Palm) are breathtaking contrasts to the stark 

rocky gorges and barren desert lands beyond. 

A moderately graded foot path winds down 

into the canyon for picnicking near the stream, 

meditation, exploring, hiking or horseback

The Palm Springs Air Museum is a living 

history museum dedicated to educating the 

public about the role Air Power played in 

preserving American liberties and way of life. 

The Museum preserves, exhibits, and flies 

aircraft from World War Two, Korean War, 

Vietnam War and the Global War on Terror. A 

good portion of the aircraft in the collection are 

in flyable condition. 

Open Cockpit Saturdays 

Museum guests are treated to the extra special 

experience of being allowed to sit at the controls 

and pose for pictures. From 10:30-12:30 each 

Saturday, a selected aircraft will be opened up 

and made accessible to the public. Museum 

Volunteers will also be on hand to answer
