PRIDE MONTH June 15
PALM SPRINGS
Father’s Day is Sunday,
June 18, 2023!
Father’s Day is not just your
granddad’s outdated genderspecific
role model malarkey.
Today we choose how to
celebrate and honor the
people who have embraced
the essential role of fathers Day.
Today, we thank those fathers
and father figures (by relation or
chosen family) for the sacrifices
they make, for embracing the
responsibility of our needs for
nurturing and growth, And for
their devotion to meet those
needs that go far beyond basic
human kindness.
2023 Greater
Palm Springs
Pride Poster
and Artist
Announced
June 12, 2023, Palm Springs, CA - - Palm Springs Pride
organizers announced today that Palm Springs resident and
pop artist Trevor Wayne is the poster artist for the 2023 Greater
Palm Springs Pride Festival and Parade. The commemorative
Pride celebration poster features Wayne’s iconic artwork.
“I am thrilled and honored to be chosen to do the art for Palm
Springs Pride this year! I was asked to do this before the theme
was selected - to which I never would say no, but I could not
have been happier once I found out the theme! On the heels
of last year’s “Say Gay” theme, I’m happy Pride is taking on
this issue. I have so many friends who are professional drag
queens, and I want to show my support.
Palm Springs is one of the few LGBTQ safe havens these days;
I decided I wanted something that said “This way” and “We
welcome you,” so I thought about using a roadside as if the
viewer is on a journey and looking for a place that would
accept them for who they are. Next, I wanted to create more
of an icon for drag. Drag is so diverse. I felt portraying images
of actual queens would only work by excluding so many types.
I think of lipstick and high heels as drag symbols. So I made the
image of the hand holding lipstick coming out of a high heel.
Initially, I thought of the hand being a protest fist. While we
must stand up and fight for our rights, I decided on something
more positive. I thought of Mother Teresa. She famously would
not attend anti-war demonstrations but would participate in
pro-peace rallies. I chose Lady Liberty for the hand, focusing
on hope and liberty for all.
Palm Springs Pride president and CEO Ron deHarte said,
“Trevor’s commemorative poster ‘Drag Now. Drag Forever.’
highlights the theme and calls on the community to unite and
support the drag community and fight anti-LGBTQ+ bills that
threaten the freedom and equality of all.”
Trevor uses iconic imagery portrayed with just a little twisted
sense of humor to warp what otherwise could be dark images
into fun, playful art intended to make people smile. As a child,
the art Trevor saw on merchandise, such as backpacks, mugs, and stationery,
heavily influenced him, and he does not discount the role it plays on everyday
items to bring joy.
The art on merchandise and his love of drawing Saturday morning cartoons led
him to a career in art. Trevor sells merchandise of his art to stores across the county.
Most notably, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art store, which houses the most
extensive collection aside from Trevor’s store, the Trevor Wayne store located at 901
N Palm Canyon Drive, in Palm Springs, California, where he resides.
Palm Springs Pride Week, presented by the City of Palm Springs, is the largest
annual event in Palm Springs. It’s also the largest multi-day gathering of LGBTQ+
people in the Coachella Valley.
A traditional slate of Pride events to celebrate the power and resiliency of
the LGBTQ+ community is scheduled for the 37th annual LGBTQ+ celebration
on November 3 – 5. The Pride Parade and Festival will return to downtown
Palm Springs, featuring multiple stages of live entertainment and an exhibitor
marketplace.
The Palm Springs Pride commemorative poster and merchandise will be available
soon at the Trevor Wayne Store and Destination PSP. Pride Week activities can be
found online at pspride.org.
Paris is Burning
In Debut Single, “Movie Star”
By Skip Sheffield
“Fame was once achieved by
only a select few on the silver
screen,” Paris King reflects
from her London home. “Then
came the age of sex tapes on
camcorders when hot babes
could become instant celebs.
Now with everyone filming
24/7 and releasing content on
social platforms, we can all be
famous! It’s simply about
finding your own way to
shine.”
The celebrated UK club kid
and drag queen sings about it
in “Movie Star,” her new song
that encourages listeners to
live life authentically and
unapologetically - the way
Paris King does! With its
wicked beat, synth vocals, and
high energy pop sound, the
feel-good track is a reminder
that we are all the stars of
own life movie.
Los Angeles
PARENT, COMMUNITY LEADER, AND BUSINESS OWNER SAM KBUSHYAN
ENTERS RACE TO REPRESENT LOS ANGELES COUNCIL DISTRICT 2
Local Non-Profit Board Member and State Commissioner launches campaign with support from over 200 individual campaign
contributors.
North Hollywood, CA – Today, business owner and California State Commissioner Sam Kbushyan announced his campaign for Los
Angeles City Council to replace Council President Paul Krekorian, who cannot seek another term due to term limits. Sam begins the
campaign having raised $150,000.00 from 230 small business owners and neighborhood leaders.
Sam started his career organizing In Home Supportive Services employees who are represented by SEIU Local 2015. Sam now owns
and operates SKG which helps small businesses and nonprofits navigate government bureaucracy to deliver services to those in need.
He currently serves on the boards of LA Community Alliance and the Immigrants Charitable Foundation. Sam and his wife Suzanna
are raising their three children together in North Hollywood.
Kbushyan, who recently served on Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s advisory transition team released the following statement:
As a small business owner, a husband and father of three schoolchildren, and a lifelong community organizer, I am running for City
Council to fight for the residents, business owners, and all stakeholders of LA’s District 2. For years, career politicians who are part of
the establishment machine made promises at every election only to ignore the community. So, our challenges have gotten worse.
It’s said that if nothing changes, nothing changes. District 2 needs a grassroots person representing the people and values of our
district’s diverse neighborhoods. Politics are usual, and establishment politicians who want to represent the district in the interim in
their long-term political ambitions have failed us. Unlike them, I’m not here to cater to the elite donors and special interests. I fight
for our neighborhoods, homeowners, renters, and business owners. My focus is to restore trust in our government and hold City Hall
accountable.”
Council District 2 includes the Los Angeles neighborhoods of North Hollywood, Studio City, Sun Valley, Toluca Lake, Valley Glen, Valley
Village, and Van Nuys.
The anatomy of a
political lie...
One SIDE!
A federal indictment against
former President Donald Trump,
unsealed on Friday, Trump faces
37 counts related to sensitive
documents recovered at his Mara-Lago
residence in Florida after
he left the White House.
Suicide!
The charges are politically
motivated, let him go!
Ask Yourself,
What side do you want?
Make the LIE
“President Trump violated no laws and is being held to a
different legal standard than other former Presidents and
Vice Presidents,” the Trump campaign wrote.
PROVE THE LIE
No president or former president has never been charged
with a crime before Trump. GOP beguiles the base that this
means president is above the law.
CHANGE THE FACTS OF THE LIE
No president can be charged ever in office, but The
Constitution gives no immunities to former government
officials after office.
Deep thinking?
Both are correct!
Its logical to think the LIBS are happy
to see the GOP leader fail, but no
more than the GOP would laugh at if
the LIBS leader falls up the stairs.
This argument is the distraction from
the fundamental question:
As Trump Said “we need to know
what the hell is going on!”
Now Delivering Every 2 Weeks
A TRUE CRIME
On at least two occasions after leaving office,
Trump displayed classified documents to others
visiting him at his golf club in Bedminster, New
Jersey, the indictment alleges. In July 2021,
Trump showed a writer, a publisher and two staff
members a “plan of attack” that he said had been
prepared for him by the U.S. military, the charges
say. The audio-recorded meeting reportedly
involved a document that Joint Chiefs of Staff
Chair Mark Milley drafted about Iran.
HAPPY JUNETEENTH
The Smithsonian National Museum of African
American History & Culture invites us to join
the museum’s Juneteenth celebration – during
the entire month of June – and embrace the
Hosted at nmaahc.si.edu/juneteenth
“The people of Texas are informed that in
accordance with a Proclamation from the
and rights of property between former masters
Gordon Granger
Union General, June 19, 1865
this monumental event remains largely unknown
to most Americans.
On “Freedom’s Eve,” or the eve of January
1, 1863, the first Watch Night services took
place. On that night, enslaved and free African
Americans gathered in churches and private
homes all across the country awaiting news that
the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect.
At the stroke of midnight, prayers were answered
as all enslaved people in Confederate States were
declared legally free. Union soldiers, many of
whom were black, marched onto plantations and
across cities in the south reading small copies
of the Emancipation Proclamation spreading
the news of freedom in Confederate States.
Only through the Thirteenth Amendment did
emancipation end slavery throughout the United
States.
flag at the request of Harvey Milk a
gay activist and City supervisor in San
Francisco. The rainbow flag has since
been updated to recognize the trans
aspect of the rights movement which
has recently been attacked by various
aspects of the far rights movement.
During the past week, the school board
of the Temecula Valley School voted
to not adopt a social studies program
that recognized Harvey Milk as a gay
activist. This exemplifies that LGBTQ
discrimination is active in our area as
well as across the nation.
Acts of discrimination have also been
found in attempting to repress PRIDE
art in department stores. Designs with
PRIDE symbols have been rejected as
an example, Target Department Stores
have either removed or limited
PRIDE designs due to threats to store
employees and vandalizing displays
of PRIDE clothing. The UK trans artist
Erik Carnell who designed some of
the PRIDE clothing for Target has been
threatened personally.
The Human Rights Campaign declares
a State of Emergency for LGBTQ+
Residents and Travelers regarding a rise
in more than 75 anti-LGBTQ bills that
have been signed into law in certain
states that have created increasingly
hostile and dangerous environments for
LGBTQ people. A guidebook can be
downloaded through the HRC website
discussing safety resources and stateby-state
laws. Artists and other activists
need to be on alert to participate in
addressing this tyranny from the far-right
and not allow hate and discrimination to
continue.
